Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tour the monuments of the Monumental City. From its beginning as a small town on the banks of the Patapsco River in 1729, Baltimore has played a significant role in the development of the United States. To commemorate those persons or events that have contributed to the city and the nation's history, Baltimore was the first American city to build public monuments. Persons honored by these monuments have included artists, entertainers, athletes, civic leaders, government officials, military veterans, public servants, religious leaders, social reformers, and war heroes. Local historian Thomas Cotter discusses the history of each monument, its origin, notable designers, funding methods, dedication ceremony, and a description of the monument itself.

Book excerpt: This book is the only one that describes exclusively the architecture, history, and art associated with 23 of Baltimore's churches and synagogues dating from 1785 to 1887. Within these houses of worship, designed by leading architects of the day, are outstanding examples of windows, statuary, paintings, mosaics, carvings and religious artifacts. Robert Cary Long, Jr., Benjamin LaTrobe and Stanford White are a few of the architects. Louis Comfort Tiffany, John LaFarge, Constantine Brumidi and Hans Schuler represent some of the artisans. A majority of the buildings are National Historic Landmarks or are on the national Register of Historic Places. Churches parallel the development of the city. The book tells why each church or synagogue was founded, the particular ethnic or social group it served and how it adapted over the years to Baltimore's changing demographics. Each building has a special story to tell. Only those religious structures which still have active congregations or are used for religious ceremonies are included. These buildings are city treasures in terms of their history, architecture and artisans' contributions to the interiors. The structures are concentrated in downtown Baltimore and include a variety of neighborhoods. The book can be used as a guide to explore these Baltimore gems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid expansion of the field of public history since the 1970s has led many to believe that it is a relatively new profession. In this book, Denise D. Meringolo shows that the roots of public history actually reach back to the nineteenth century, when the federal government entered into the work of collecting and preserving the nation's natural and cultural resources. Yet it was not until the emergence of the education-oriented National Park Service history program in the 1920s and 1930s that public history found an institutional home. Even then, tensions between administrators in Washington and practitioners on the ground at National Parks, monuments, and museums continued to redefine the scope and substance of the field. The process of definition persists to this day as public historians establish a growing presence in major universities throughout the United States and abroad. Book jacket.

Some neighborhoods meander for several city blocks while others claim only a few. This volume of vintage postcards provides unique glimpses into the past of many of Baltimore's neighborhoods. Included are the elegant homes of Roland Park, Guildford, and Sherwood Gardens; the workingman's Highlandtown, South Baltimore, and Locust Point; the streetcar suburbs of Mount Washington, Overlea, Ten Hills, and Hunting Ridge; and the city park-anchored communities of Patterson Park, Federal Hill, and Gwynns Falls. Readers will find no two communities alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The War of 1812 ranged over a remarkably large territory, as the fledgling United States battled Great Britain at sea and on land across what is now the eastern half of the U.S. and Canada. Native people and the Spanish were also involved in the war’s interrelated conflicts. Often overlooked, the War of 1812 has been the subject of an explosion of new research over the past twenty-five years. The Routledge Handbook of the War of 1812 brings together the insights of this research through an array of fresh essays by leading scholars in the field, offering an overview of current understandings of the war that will be a vital reference for students and researchers alike. The essays in this volume examine a wide range of military, political, social, and cultural dimensions of the war. With full consideration given to American, Canadian, British, and native viewpoints, the international group of contributors place the war in national and international context, chart the course of events in its different theaters, consider the war’s legacy and commemoration, and examine the roles of women, African Americans, and natives. Capturing the state of the field in a single volume, this handbook is a must-have resource for anyone with an interest in early America.

Herrera, Cassandra Jackson, Stacie McCormick, Maria Seger, Randi Lynn Tanglen, Brook Thomas, Michael C. Weisenburg, and Lisa Woolfork Reading Confederate Monuments addresses the urgent and vital need for scholars, educators, and the general public to be able to read and interpret the literal and cultural Confederate monuments pervading life in the contemporary United States. The literary and cultural studies scholars featured in this collection engage many different archives and methods, demonstrating how to read literal Confederate monuments as texts and in the context of the assortment of literatures that produced and celebrated them. They further explore how to read the literary texts advancing and contesting Confederate ideology in the US cultural imaginary—then and now—as monuments in and of themselves. On top of that, the essays published here lay bare the cultural and pedagogical work of Confederate monuments and counter-monuments—divulging how and what they teach their readers as communal and yet contested narratives—thereby showing why the persistence of Confederate monuments matters greatly to local and national notions of racial justice and belonging. In doing so, this collection illustrates what critics of US literature and culture can offer to ongoing scholarly and public discussions about Confederate monuments and memory. Even as we remove, relocate, and recontextualize the physical symbols of the Confederacy dotting the US landscape, the complicated histories, cultural products, and pedagogies of Confederate ideology remain embedded in the national consciousness. To disrupt and potentially dismantle these enduring narratives alongside the statues themselves, we must be able to recognize, analyze, and resist them in US life. The pieces in this collection position us to think deeply about how and why we should continue that work.
