Book excerpt: Balloon instrumentation was used to identify and measure Transverse Electric (TE) and Transverse Magnetic (TM) polarization components of a 44.0 kHz wave from an ARC-96 trailing-wire antenna on an EC-135 aircraft operating at an altitude of 31,000 feet. The 800 mile (1300 km) propagation path was sunlit. At an altitude of 70,000 feet the aerodynamically shaped balloon-borne receiver package was released to free-fall, in order to obtain axis stabilization. The azimuthal directivity pattern of the transmitter was measured, the relative amplitudes of the TE and TM components were determined as functions of altitude, and a preliminary estimate of the atmospheric noise background was obtained.

The altitude distribution of these waves should however differ markedly from that of the conventional Transverse Magnetic (TM) waves. To test these ideas, a special balloon receiver-probe was designed and flown. The experimental data provide strong evidence that TE fields from a standard ARC-96 airborne transmitter not only exists, but can be much larger than the associated TM fields at high altitudes.

The profile shapes are shown to depend both on ground parameters and on solar illumination conditions over the propagation paths. Significant TM-to-TE conversion was observed for ground-based transmitters located in the night hemisphere, while none was measured for sources in daylight. No TE-to-TM conversion was measured for the airborne transmitter. (Author).
