Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three different models for representing an axially symmetric, magnetically focused electron beam, the laminar model, the optical model and the ballistic model, are analyzed mathematically and the computed behavior of each is compared with experimental observations of real electron beams. The over-all behavior of the laminar model agrees to some ex ent with the behavior of real electron beams; however, the motion of individual electrons or groups of electrons is not at all well predicted by the laminar model. The optical model describes with good accuracy the motion of individual electrons or groups of electrons, as well as the over-all behavior of real beams. The spreading of a beam by ther al velocities and the appearance of images in the current density at periodic intervals along a beam, phenomena that are observed experimentally, are predicted accurately by the optical model. Simple forms of lens aberrations are also treated with the aid of the optical model.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study has been undertaken in order to investigate plasma wakefield effects produced in intense electron beam propagation in a background plasma. A 2 MeV, 1 kA, electron beam is used for this experiment. A 50 cm diam., 3.6 m long drift tube is filled with a background gas, typically trimethylamine (TMA). This gas is ionized by electrons emitted from heated tungsten filaments which are biased at approximately -100 Volts. The resultant plasma density is fairly uniform and is adjustable in the range 10 to the 8th power to 5 x 10 to the 9th power per cubic cm. A higher density Ion Focused Regime (IFR) channel for electron beam propagation is generated by KrF-laser (248 nm) ionization of the background TMA gas. The intense electron beam propagating on an IFR channel in this background plasma experiences wakefield effects due to the natural oscillations of the background plasma which are excited by the beam current risetime. The Ez component of the induced field is responsible for producing beam current modulation near the background plasma frequency. The results scale with plasma density as expected and current modulation is nearly complete for a certain parameter range. This technique may be amenable to a high power microwave generation technique analogous to the relativistic klystron. Detailed experimental results of beam modulation will be presented.
Book Synopsis Interaction of Modulated Electron Beams with Open Periodic Structures by : Andrew Richard Neureuther
Download or read book Interaction of Modulated Electron Beams with Open Periodic Structures written by Andrew Richard Neureuther and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three electromagnetic boundary value problems involving the interaction of modulated electron beams with open periodic structures are studied theoretically with particular emphasis on producing Smith-Purcell radiation. The problem of an ideal sheet electron beam coupled to a sinusoidally-modulated reactance surface is considered. The purpose of this investigation is to demonstrate the influence of the synchronism or forced resonance condition on the interaction and to point out how the Brillouin diagram can be used to predict some of the quantitative as well as most of the qualitative properties of this influence. The more practical three dimensional problem of an ideal beam coupled to the narrow tape helix is treated rigorously. The results of this analysis give quantitative estimates of the interaction strength obtainable experimentally. Finally it is pointed out that the prescribed source model is limited in accurately predicting its own length of validity and in describing surface wave coupling. (Author).

Book Synopsis Behaviour of Modulated Electron Beams Subjected to Various Potential Distributions by : Issie Shkarofsky
Download or read book Behaviour of Modulated Electron Beams Subjected to Various Potential Distributions written by Issie Shkarofsky and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The electronic equation was checked for modulated beams, subjected to various potential distributions. A demountable system with two cavities was used. In a drift tube, the d.c. current or voltage or distance was varied. The maxima and minima points in the patterns were investigated for phase and power. The power at the second maximum was less than theory predicted. Results on a sealed off tube were similar. The discrepancy was probably due to secondary electrons." --
