Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New England History in Ballads I am fond of saying that we have never had fifty good American ballads. We have never had any, if the ballad is to fulfil the conditions which Mr. Lowell and other writers who know have assigned for good ballad poetry. The truth is that the immortal ballads of the past could never have existed had not the people who composed them lived in the conditions of life which made them what they were. Mr. Lowell said that the authors of the English and Scotch ballads had these advantages, which are hardly possible to-day: One. They were not encumbered with information. Two. They sang well because they never thought about it. Three. In repeating their poems, they had the magnetism of the sympathy of their hearers, - they saw their faces as they spoke. Four. They plunged at once into deep water without preface. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Naval Ballads of England Of the collection itself it is not necessary to speak, further than to remark that instead of a selection of the best ballads on naval subjects, which would have been comprised in a very briefcompass, the Editor has found it expedient to insert every one that he could discover which could possibly be included in his collection, and the reader will perceive that this plan has not been the means of forming a volume by any means commensurate in size with the national interest of the subject. The peasants take off their hats as you pass; you sneeze, and they cry, God bless you. The houses in the villages and small er towns are all built of hewn timber, and for the most part painted red. The floors of the taverns are strewn with the fragrant tips of fir boughs. In many villages there are no taverns, and the peasants take turns in receiv ing travellers. The thrifty housewife shows you into the best chamber, the walls of which are hung round with rude pictures from the Bible; and brings you her heavy silver spoons, an heirloom, to dip the curdled milk from the pan. You have oaten cakes baked some months before; of bread with anise-seed and coriander in it, or perhaps a little pine bark. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Our National Ballads Although it was known, to some extent, on this side Of the water, since the Old days Of the French and Indian War, a special interest attaches to the fact that it began, and it ended, the Great Drama of the American Revolution; a drama which opened in New England, - culminated in New York, - and closed in Virginia. These three colonies were, each in turn, the Chief seat Of war. George William Curtis exclaims, Paul Revere's lantern shone through the valley of the Hudson, and flashed along the cliffs Of the Blue Ridge! This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ballads offer one of the most fascinating and revealing records of humankind—our deepest feelings and most profound experiences, our laughter and joys, our troubles and sorrows. There is no battle, no romance, no escapade, no tragedy recorded in song which is not rich both in historical significance and in contemporary experience. A ballad is a link with past generations, traditions, and the basic character traits of a people, a region, or a country. The associations formed, the recollections stirred make the study of this form of music a rewarding experience. The first printed collection of ballads was made in 1723-25 and entitled simply Old Ballads. That it met with warm approval is indicated by the fact that a third edition was published as soon as 1727. Since the publication of that first collection, interest in the ballad and demand for ballad texts have grown constantly. During the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries, several hundred collections were published. Many of these collections have become classics in the field of balladry. With the publication of this fourth and final volume of the Ancient Ballads series, the Helen Hartness Flanders Collection took its place with the other classics in the field. Volume IV contains child ballads 250-295 with thirty-six versions of "The Sweet Trinity," or "The Golden Vanity," alone. This is representative of the completeness of the series and reflects the years of scholarship that went into the collecting, interviewing, scoring, and editing of the collection. With analyses by Tristram P. Coffin and musical annotations by Bruno Netti, Helen Hartness Flanders's work constitutes an invaluable source for the student of the ballad, as well as those interested in the related studies of musicology, literature, history, social sciences, and ethnology. Ancient Ballads Traditionally Sung in New England provides endless opportunity for both scholarly study and sheer fascination.

He has sought that no word of his should tend to foment class jealousies; and, whilst singing of the sorrows and the trials of the poor, he has never forgotten how many men there are who, prosperous themselves, sympathise with such sorrows as much as he. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ronald D. Lankford has written the definitive history of this iconic and much-loved Christmas character. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was the creation of Robert May, a staff copywriter who wrote the original poem as a Montgomery Ward Christmas giveaway in 1939. More than 2.4 million copies were printed and given away that holiday season. Thus the legend began. Johnny Marks adapted the poem into what would become the Gene Autry hit "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," which instantly became - and still remains - one of the most popular Christmas songs of all time. The legend of Rudolph soared even higher with the Rankin/Bass stop-motion television special in 1964, which has gone on to inspire a cottage industry of toys and decorative items. In this festive and informed look at the most famous reindeer of all, Lankford discusses all of Rudolph's iterations, including comic books, sequels, advertising tie-ins, movies, and much more. Lankford has produced the first complete history of Rudolph that both celebrates and explains the undying popularity of Rudolph and his friends. The result is both a glowing tribute and a rigorously researched biography that will appeal to fans and lovers of classic American holiday culture.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old English Ballads U'nlike the earlier collections of ballads, this little vol ume is offered to the public without apology for the poems; they have long since established themselves in the body Of our literature. Many teachers, however, have been unable to put them into the hands Of their pupils for want Of a cheap yet faith ful text, and this edition is offered in the hope of answering such a need. The little trouble necessary for mastering the somewhat antiquated forms Of the language will be amply repaid by the fuller knowledge that will be gained of the real thought and feeling Of our ancestors.
