Two of them, with some slight alterations, were included in the Ballads and Legends of Cheshire, collected by the late Colonel Egerton Leigh, and published in 1867, So many of the old houses in the two counties palatine have disappeared within the last half century, and so many of the legends and traditions connected with them have been lost, that it is desirable the latter, whenever discovered, should receive either in prose or verse some form calculated to give them permanency. Those to which the author has endeavoured to give a metrical form have been communicated to him by friends in possession of the houses to which they relate, or who were in some other way connected with them. A perusal of the chapter headings will show the scope of the work - as also its multi farious features, many of which have never hitherto been published - far more than any dry display of facts and figures. The Author recalls with deep feelings of pleasure the reception given to the History of Altrincham and Bowdon in 1879, amplified to include Sale and the surrounding townships in a second work some twenty years ago. Both editions are now out of print. They have since brought a premium on published prices and are looked upon as heirlooms in local families. Special stress may be laid on chapters relating to Parliamentary and Local Government, including description of the first election and meeting of the Cheshire County Council. They are the most complete ever published. The life and times of Henry, Lord Delamere, first Earl of Warring ton, the Cheshire patriot par excellence, are set forth at length, including the famous trial for High Treason before Judge Jeffreys. Especially interesting also will be found the doings of Cheshire men in wars, ancient and modern, Cheshire charac teristics, proverbs, ballads, legends, quaint sayings, Cheshire in the days of bluff King Hal, etc. The record of the rise and progress of Freemasonry in the Province of Cheshire (the oldest in the world), will, it is hoped, find acceptance amongst the members of that noble order. This is the first time it has been put in a readable and popular form, and, like the secular part of the work, is the result of personal observation of half a century. The Appendix at the end of the work will be found of great service for reference. The illustrations, like the text, have followed original lines. Included is a facsimile page of the speech by His Grace the Duke of Westminster on the presenta tion of a portrait of Mr Duncan Graham, first Chairman to the Cheshire County Council. Extremely interesting also will be found the portraits of the first Earl of Warrington and Sir Peter Leycester.
