Book Synopsis Balkan Identities by : Maria Todorova
Download or read book Balkan Identities written by Maria Todorova and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2004-04 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Balkan Identities brings together historians, anthropologists, and literary scholars all working under the shared conviction that the only way to overcome history is to intimately understand it. The contributors of Balkan Identities focus on historical memory, collective national memory, and the political manipulation of national identities. They refine our understanding of memory and identity in general and explore and assess the significance of particular manifestations of Balkan national identities and national memories in the region. The essays in Balkan Identities grapple with three major problems: the construction of historical memory, sites of national memory, and the mobilization of national identities. While most essays focus on a single country (e.g. Croatia, Romania, Turkey, Cyprus, Albania, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia), they are in dialogue with each other and share an opposition to rigid isolationist identities. Illuminating and challenging, Balkan Identities demonstrates the ever-changing nature of a troubled and culturally vibrant region.
Book Synopsis Balkan Propaganda Wars by : Călin Hentea
Download or read book Balkan Propaganda Wars written by Călin Hentea and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Balkan Propaganda Wars provides an historical, political, and propagandistic perspective of the volatile situation that exists in the Balkans. The book reviews the historical background of the Balkan people--especially those belonging to the former Yugoslavia--from Antiquity through the troubled centuries of the Middle Ages, and continuing with the birth of the modern Balkan states in the 19th century and the more recent political and military evolutions during the 20th century. For each period, the role of propaganda is underlined and examined. The unbiased background the book supplies will allow users to gain an impartial perspective on events such as the Yugoslav War, the Kosovo War, ethnic cleansing, and the large population shifts these events brought about. UN and NATO informational performances in Bosnia and Kosovo are deeply scrutinized and compared during UNPROFOR, IFOR, SFOR, and KFOR missions. The resulting information war between NATO and Yugoslavia are also presented and analyzed. For scholars, historians, journalists, and anyone else who wishes to understand how to see through the information they are presented on war, Balkan Propaganda Wars will prove invaluable.

Download or read book Serbia written by Marko Attila Hoare and published by Hurst Publishers. This book was released on 2024-02-08 with total page 861 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first in-depth, English-language history of modern Serbia in nearly half a century. It covers the period from the Serbian state’s revolutionary rebirth in the early nineteenth century, under the rebel leaders Karađorđe Petrović and Miloš Obrenović; its turbulent history of wars, uprisings and dynastic rivalries; the triumph of Yugoslav unification in 1918; and the catastrophe of occupation by Nazi Germany in 1941. It shows how the birth of the modern nation-state involved the creation of a new elite—dynasty, army and bureaucracy—whose rule over the peasantry generated a popular resistance that would ultimately take form in Nikola Pašić’s mighty People’s Radical Party. The resulting struggle between elitist Westernisers and pro-Russian populists became entwined with the struggle for pan-Serb and Yugoslav liberation and unification. These causes came together with the Sarajevo assassination of 1914, which triggered the First World War. Existing histories of the Yugoslav kingdom that emerged from that war focus on the national conflict between Serbs, Croats, Bosnian Muslims and others, but Marko Attila Hoare challenges this narrative. He shows how the new kingdom’s politics continued to be dominated by the ongoing internal Serbian power struggle, bringing renewed disaster to Yugoslavia and its peoples.

Book Synopsis Transitional Aesthetics by : Uroš Cvoro
Download or read book Transitional Aesthetics written by Uroš Cvoro and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-05-17 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the way in which artists from the former Eastern bloc perceive the experience of EU integration and transition from a Soviet past as a conceptual launching pad, this book explores how artists critically inhabit a permanent state of 'in-between' to capture the simultaneous existence of multiple and overlapping temporalities. Transitional aesthetics are artistic strategies that disrupt and interrogate ideologically loaded trajectories of cultural, social, or political transition. Examples of such trajectories include the movement from totalitarianism to democracy (post-socialism), from war to freedom and reconciliation (post-conflict), and from the edges of Europe to its centre (inclusion in the European Union). These transitional states include: the future orientation of (failed) socialism and the perpetual present of global capital; the history of unresolved past conflicts and reconciliation through 'transitional justice'; nationalist obsessions with the past and the cultural appeal of kitsch and retro objects in fashion, film and music; and the uncertain future promise of EU membership and resurgence of global right-wing populism, headed by figures like Berlusconi, Le Pen, and Trump. Transitional Aesthetics shows that apprehending time in contemporary art is fundamental to capturing the lived experience of a permanent state of instability; particularly relevant to Europe in the contemporary moment. In a world that has entered 'accelerated transition' towards instability, understanding this experience has broad and resonating relevance for politics, art and society.
