Book excerpt: The mountains guard their secrets.... The remote village of Trout Run lies inside New York State's vast Adirondack Park, a tiny community cloistered within deep forests and rugged mountains. You can drive for miles without seeing another soul -- so when high school senior Janelle Harvey vanishes while walking home along a lonely forest road, only the trees are mute witnesses to her disappearance. Police Chief Frank Bennett is new to Trout Run, and he's determined not to make another mistake in judgment like the one that cost him his previous job. But no one -- family, friends, or clergy -- seems willing to tell all they know about Janelle. Yet as the search goes on, Frank determinedly peels back the layers of mystery...only to find that even in a town where everyone knows your name, there are some secrets no one wants shared.

Download or read book The Exploited Seas written by Poul Holm and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book combines the approaches of maritime history and ecological science to explore the evolution of life-forms and eco-systems in the ocean from a historical perspective, in order to establish and develop the sub-discipline of marine environmental history. Documentary records relating to the human activity, such as fishing, plus naturally occurring paleo-ecological data are analysed in order to determine the structure and function of exploited ecosystems. The book is divided into four chapter groups, the first concerned with Newfoundland and Grand Banks’ fisheries, the second with the potential of historical sources to provide a history of marine animal populations, the third explores the development of fisheries in the southern hemisphere during the twentieth century, and the final section explores the limitations of data and existing analysis of whale populations. The epilogue reiterates the suggestion that collaboration between historians and biologists is the key to furthering the sub-discipline.
Book Synopsis Fishing a Borderless Sea by : Brian J. Payne
Download or read book Fishing a Borderless Sea written by Brian J. Payne and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2010-02-16 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the centuries, processing and distribution of products from land and sea has stimulated the growth of a global economy. In the broad sweep of world history, it may be hard to imagine a place for the meager little herring baitfish. Yet, as Brian Payne adeptly recounts, the baitfish trade was hotly contested in the Anglo-American world throughout the nineteenth century. Politicians called for wars, navies were dispatched with guns at the ready, vessels were seized at sea, and violence erupted at sea. Yet, the battle over baitfish was not simply a diplomatic or political affair. Fishermen from hundreds of villages along the coastline of Atlantic Canada and New England played essential roles in the construction of legal authority that granted or denied access to these profitable bait fisheries. Fishing a Borderless Sea illustrates how everyday laborers created a complex system of environmental stewardship that enabled them to control the local resources while also allowing them access into the larger global economy.
