Book Synopsis Applied Myrmecology by : Robert K Vander Meer
Download or read book Applied Myrmecology written by Robert K Vander Meer and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 765 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ants have always fascinated the nature observer. Reports from ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia indicate that ants interested humans long ago. Myrmecology as a science had its beginning in the last century with great naturalists like Andre, Darwin, Emery, Escherich, Fabre, Fields, Forel, Janet, Karawaiew, McCook, Mayr, Smith, Wasmann and Wheeler. They studied ants as an interesting biological phenomenon, with little thought of the possible beneficial or detrimental effects ants could have on human activities (see Wheeler 1910 as an example). When Europeans began colonizing the New World, serious ant problems occurred. The first reports of pest ants came from Spanish and Portuguese officials of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries in Trinidad, The West Indies, Central America and South America. Leaf-cutting ants were blamed for making agricultural development almost impossible in many areas. These ants, Atta and Acromyrmex species, are undoubtedly the first ants identified as pests and may be considered to have initiated interest and research in applied myrmecology (Mariconi 1970).
Book Synopsis Economic Zooarchaeology by : Peter Rowley-Conwy
Download or read book Economic Zooarchaeology written by Peter Rowley-Conwy and published by Oxbow Books Limited. This book was released on 2017-05-31 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic archaeology is the study of how past peoples exploited animals and plants, using as evidence the remains of those animals and plants. The animal side is usually termed zooarchaeology, the plant side archaeobotany. What distinguishes them from other studies of ancient animals and plants is that their ultimate aim is to find out about human behaviour – the animal and plant remains are a means to this end. The 33 papers present a wide array of topics covering many areas of archaeological interest. Aspects of method and theory, animal bone identification, human palaeopathology, prehistoric animal utilisation in South America, and the study of dog cemeteries are covered. The long-running controversy over the milking of animals and the use of dairy products by humans is discussed as is the ecological impact of hunting by farmers, with studies from Serbia and Syria. For Britain, coverage extends from Mesolithic Star Carr, via the origins of agriculture and the farmers of Lismore Fields, through considerations of the Neolithic and Bronze Age. Outside Britain, papers discuss Neolithic subsistence in Cyprus and Croatia, Iron Age society in Spain, Medieval and post-medieval animal utilisation in northern Russia, and the claimed finding of a modern red deer skeleton in Egypt’s Eastern Desert. In exploring these themes, this volume celebrates the life and work of Tony Legge (zoo)archaeologist and teacher.

Download or read book ANTS PB written by AGOSTI D and published by Smithsonian Books (DC). This book was released on 2000-10-17 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numbering more than nine thousand described species, ants rank among the most abundant and widespread groups. The collective weight of ants in tropical forests and grasslands may constitute as much as 10 to 15 percent of the animal biomass. Ground-dwelling ants are major invertebrate predators in some areas, and they also have profound effects on flora because of their prodigious ability to consume plants, disperse seeds, and enrich the soil. Interacting with other organisms at every level, ants are ubiquitous, diverse, easy to collect, and sensitive to environmental change -- all attributes that make them well suited to biodiversity studies. Written by thirty leading ant biologists, this comprehensive book describes procedures for surveying the diversity of ground-dwelling ants. It introduces a standardized protocol for collecting ant samples in any part of the world and for conducting repeated sampling over time, which enables researchers to analyze global and longterm patterns. Chapters compare ant diversity to the diversity of other organisms and explain the value of ant studies in monitoring ecosystem change in diverse regions, including Madagascar, Malaysia, India, and Brazil. Covering aspects of ant ecology and taxonomy, species identification, specimen preparation, and sources of sampling equipment, this book provides the necessary foundation for readers from a wide range of backgrounds. It is indispensable not only to ant researchers but also to entomologists, conservationists, students, land managers, and others who assess biodiversity or environmental impacts.
