Book Synopsis Historical Dictionary of the Gulf Arab States by : Malcolm C. Peck
Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Gulf Arab States written by Malcolm C. Peck and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2007-12-20 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of the Gulf Arab States comes at a time when the world's attention is riveted on the Middle East. The small states covered in this volume_Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE)_possess about 20 percent of the world's total oil reserves. Beyond the strategic and economic importance conferred upon them by their vast oil reserves, the Gulf Arab states are worthy of attention for the inherent interest of their history and culture. No area of the world has yielded more revealing and exciting archaeological finds in the past few decades than these states. Investigations have brought to light extensive evidence of an important culture as old as Egypt of the Pharaohs or ancient Babylon, which was virtually unknown previously except through rare references in the records of other civilizations. This expanded second edition covers the history of the five countries through a chronology broken down by country, a list of acronyms and abbreviations, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and several hundred cross-referenced dictionary entries on important persons, places, and events of each country. Everything from the Abbasids to Zubarah is covered in this essential reference on this increasingly important region of the world.

Book Synopsis Society and State in the Gulf and Arab Peninsula (RLE: The Arab Nation) by : Khaldoun Nassan Al-Naqeeb
Download or read book Society and State in the Gulf and Arab Peninsula (RLE: The Arab Nation) written by Khaldoun Nassan Al-Naqeeb and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is both a history and contemporary analysis. Charting the main turnpoints as the growth of cities, trade routes, the petroleum industry and growth of the authoritarian state the author argues that central bureaucratic control is limiting growth. He describes the state as governed by the interests of the ruling family who continue to block opportunities for social mobility. He is also critical of the lack of a broad, productive base in the economy, the export of capital and its effect on investment in local resources, as well as the technological dependence on the West.

Book Synopsis China's Foreign Policy in the Arab World, 1955-75 by : Hashim S.H. Behbehani
Download or read book China's Foreign Policy in the Arab World, 1955-75 written by Hashim S.H. Behbehani and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-10 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China’s foreign policy in the Arab world is important because it reflects China’s general foreign policy. In this study, first published in 1981, the author draws upon a wealth of previously unpublished and inaccessible material to analyse Chinese attitudes in three cases: the two Arab liberation movements, the Palestine Resistance Movement and the Popular Front for the Liberation of the Oman, and the established and independent State of Kuwait. Since the Arab liberation movements played a significant political role within their fields of operation, it was necessary for China to decide whether these movements did actually fit in with Chinese foreign policy objectives. Dr Behbehani’s analysis of these two case studies provides the basis for a discussion of whether China’s motives in supporting the liberation movements are theoretical or purely practical. China’s support for Kuwait’s political internal continuity is related to the stability of the whole Gulf region. The author analyses Chinese support for Kuwait and the surrounding conservative states on two main bases, political and economic, in the form of trade. It is through these channels, particularly the economic one, that China has sought to establish itself in the Gulf and the Arabian peninsula.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Al Khalifa of Bahrain is a long-standing dynasty that has established dispute resolution measures to overcome intra-tribal ambitions for power and wealth, replacing extra-constitutional rulership succession with primogeniture. Since their control over Bahrain began in 1783 until the British withdrawal from the Gulf in 1971, the Al Khalifa introduced ten senior ruling shaykhs, seven of whom experienced turbulent successions, and faced in-house rivalries and power-seeking disputes. This book provides valuable insights into how the Al Khalifa tribe managed to shape and maintain their patrimonial rule for over 240 years, ultimately emerging as one of the most prevailing and enduring royal families in the region today. It delves into their strategies and tactics for overcoming local contexts, external challenges, and intra-tribal rivalries. The book is an essential read for anyone interested in the history and politics of Bahrain and the Gulf region.

Book Synopsis The United Arab Emirates by : John Duke Anthony
Download or read book The United Arab Emirates written by John Duke Anthony and published by Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research. This book was released on 2002-03-19 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tale of the UAE's birth is an inspiring account of how the constituent polities were able to achieve unity, despite a historical backdrop of failed Arab confederative experiments. Two distinctive attributes of the birth and evolution of the United Arab Emirates were the non-violent process of its establishment and the nature of the agreements wrought by the member-states on the union's functioning and apportionment, as well as what autonomy would be retained in the constituent emirates. Undoubtedly, certain external factors facilitated the UAE's nation building, among which were a window of relative regional peace, the support of Great Britain for the process, and the desire of most of the Emirates' neighbors for a successful outcome. Equally important as these and other factors were the personality and skills of one man who is credited with being the real unifying force behind the federation His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan.
Book Synopsis Arab Manpower (RLE Economy of Middle East) by : J.S. Birks
Download or read book Arab Manpower (RLE Economy of Middle East) written by J.S. Birks and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-26 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arab world increasingly falls into two divisions, the capital-poor and the capital-rich countries (where capital means, in essence, oil). In the capital-rich countries shortage of labour is the chief constraint on growth. In the capital-poor countries analysis of the labour market is equally central, as shortage of labour compounds the already existing problem of shortage of capital. This book surveys the labour markets of the Arab world state by state, evaluating them by demand and supply analysis, and analysing the different elements in trends of employment. It forecasts the areas of stress in the next decade and suggests ways of minimising them. The book, based on much previously unpublished information and on extensive on-the-spot research in the respective Arab countries, sets out the economic and social conditions which underly the impending crisis of development in the Arab region. First published in 1980.
