Book excerpt: The rise of a prominent auditory culture, reveals the degree to which sound art is lending definition to the 21st Century. And yet sound art still lacks related literature to compliment, and expand, the realm of practice. Background Noise sets out an historical overview, while at the same time shaping that history according to what sound art reveals - the dynamics of art to operate spatially, through media of reproduction and broadcast, and in relation to the intensities of communication and its contextual framework

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Something isn't right with Jeremy... I hear these words often. I also hear "you are just being lazy." Or, "you need to try harder." And "you don't care." I do care. I'd like to tell you why I am like this, but I can't. My brain won't let me. It's busy doing other things. I'm a 12-year-old boy on the outside. But inside, I am different. Failure follows me everywhere. You might be like me. Maybe you failed 6th grade, like I did. Maybe you have never had a real friend. You may know everything about the stars, but you can't write one paragraph. Maybe, like me, you made a huge, awful mistake that came with huge, awful consequences that changed my life forever. Another new school. The same old problems. No one teaches the way I learn. They only know "something isn't right with Jeremy." But, this school isn't like the rest. On the outside, it looks normal. But inside? It's all kinds of different. BACKGROUND NOISE is the story of children who have extraordinary capabilities, yet are trapped inside their minds. They have begun circling down a funnel of failure because they are misidentified and misunderstood in a world that doesn't think the way they think and doesn't teach the way they learn. It's about finding a way to manage their twice-exceptionality and access their gifts to change their lives and those of others. It's story of learning, discovery and friendship as much as it is about a disenfranchised population of children struggling to find their place in the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noise, as we usually think of it, is background sound that interferes with our ability to hear more interesting sounds. In general terms, though, it is anything that interferes with the reception of signals of any sort. It includes extraneous energy in the environment, degradation of signals in transit, and spontaneous random activity in receivers and signalers. Whatever the cause, the consequence of noise is error by receivers, and these errors are the key to understanding how noise shapes the evolution of communication. Noise Matters breaks new ground in the scientific understanding of how communication evolves in the presence of noise. Combining insights of signal detection theory with evidence from decades of his own original research, Haven Wiley explains the profound effects of noise on the evolution of communication. The coevolution of signalers and receivers does not result in ideal, noise-free communication, Wiley finds. Instead, signalers and receivers evolve to a joint equilibrium in which communication is effective but never error-free. Noise is inescapable in the evolution of communication. Wiley’s comprehensive approach considers communication on many different levels of biological organization, from cells to individual organisms, including humans. Social interactions, such as honesty, mate choice, and cooperation, are reassessed in the light of noisy communication. The final sections demonstrate that noise even affects how we think about human language, science, subjectivity, and freedom. Noise Matters thus contributes to understanding the behavior of animals, including ourselves.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BOOK AWARD WINNER • An “eerie, brilliant, and touching” (The New York Times) modern classic about mass culture and the numbing effects of technology. “Tremendously funny . . . A stunning performance from one of our most intelligent novelists.”—The New Republic The inspiration for the award-winning major motion picture starring Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig Jack Gladney teaches Hitler Studies at a liberal arts college in Middle America where his colleagues include New York expatriates who want to immerse themselves in “American magic and dread.” Jack and his fourth wife, Babette, bound by their love, fear of death, and four ultramodern offspring, navigate the usual rocky passages of family life to the background babble of brand-name consumerism. Then a lethal black chemical cloud floats over their lives, an “airborne toxic event” unleashed by an industrial accident. The menacing cloud is a more urgent and visible version of the “white noise” engulfing the Gladney family—radio transmissions, sirens, microwaves, ultrasonic appliances, and TV murmurings—pulsing with life, yet suggesting something ominous.

Book excerpt: The new neighbors don’t seem interested in socializing . . . “An enormously enjoyable first contact story . . . from a talented new voice in sci-fi.” —A.G. Riddle, bestselling author of The Atlantis Gene Three years ago, a spaceship landed in an open field in the quiet mill town of Sorrow Falls, Massachusetts. It never opened its doors, and for all that time, the townspeople have wondered why the ship landed there, and what—or who—could be inside. Then one day a government operative—posing as a journalist—arrives in town, asking questions. He discovers sixteen-year-old Annie Collins, one of the ship’s closest neighbors and a local fixture known throughout the town, who has some of the answers. As a matter of fact, Annie Collins might be the most important person on the planet. She just doesn’t know it . . . “Doucette’s dry sense of humor and obvious affection for his characters go a long way.” —Kirkus Reviews “Doucette delights with this wonderful example of speculative fiction that relies on startling concepts, beginning with ‘What if an alien ship landed and then nothing happened?’ . . . plenty of humor and action move the plot along. This excellent work will appeal to readers from middle school through adulthood.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the 119 species of marine mammals, as well as for some other aquatic animals, sound is the primary means of learning about the environment and of communicating, navigating, and foraging. The possibility that human-generated noise could harm marine mammals or significantly interfere with their normal activities is an issue of increasing concern. Noise and its potential impacts have been regulated since the passage of the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972. Public awareness of the issue escalated in 1990s when researchers began using high-intensity sound to measure ocean climate changes. More recently, the stranding of beaked whales in proximity to Navy sonar use has again put the issue in the spotlight. Ocean Noise and Marine Mammals reviews sources of noise in the ocean environment, what is known of the responses of marine mammals to acoustic disturbance, and what models exist for describing ocean noise and marine mammal responses. Recommendations are made for future data gathering efforts, studies of marine mammal behavior and physiology, and modeling efforts necessary to determine what the long- and short-term impacts of ocean noise on marine mammals.
