It gives insight into the complex interplay of educational inequalities and practices of educational governance in the neighborhood and at larger geographical scales. The book adopts quantitative and qualitative methodologies and explores a wide range of theoretical perspectives by drawing upon empirical cases and examples from France, Germany, Italy, the UK and North America, and presents and reflects ongoing research of international scholars from various disciplinary backgrounds such as education, human geography, public policy, sociology, and urban and regional planning. As such, it provides an interesting read for scholars, students and professionals in the broader field of social, cultural and educational studies, as well as policy makers and practitioners in the fields of education, pedagogy, social work, and urban and regional planning.

Book excerpt: DNA microarrays are an indispensible tool in molecular biology, which allows researchers to gain insight into the intricate mechanisms of gene expression. Common to all array-based technologies is the necessity to analyze digital images of the scanned DNA array. This book offers the basics of machine vision and image analysis for biologists, "how-to" approach to microarray image analysis, and practical tips for both the novice in this field and the advanced user.
Book Synopsis The Determinants of Neighborhood Quality by : Robert W. Marans
Download or read book The Determinants of Neighborhood Quality written by Robert W. Marans and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent empirical research has demonstrated that neighborhood quality is associated with residents' evaluation of specific attributes of their housing environment. This paper uses the 1976 Annual Housing Survey to assess the contributions to overall neighborhood quality of people's evaluations of environmental conditions and public services. It considers 1) the extent to which the presence or absence of conditions influences ratings of neighborhoods, 2) the relative importance of conditions and service evaluations in explaining overall neighborhood ratings, and 3) the extent to which the evaluations in households with different background characteristics differ in importance in explaining overall neighborhood ratings.

Book Synopsis Neighborhood Upgrading by : David P. Varady
Download or read book Neighborhood Upgrading written by David P. Varady and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1986-01-01 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neighborhood Upgrading examines the effectiveness of government-subsidized housing rehabilitation programs in reversing patterns of neighborhood decline. Varady takes a realistic look at the dilemma facing policy planners attempting to effect changes on a local level. His is the first study to assess the impact of neighborhood ethnic and social class changes on mobility and investment decisions. There has been little empirical research on neighborhood upgrading where improvement results from the efforts of existing residents aides by government assistance. Varady' study makes a major contribution in illuminating the variables of this process. Focusing on the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Urban Homesteading Demonstration (UHD), he presents disturbing findings that are applicable to other neighborhood preservation programs such as the Neighborhood Housing Service (NHS) and the Community Development Block Grant Program. He argues that the future success of such programs lies in the ability of planners and policy makers to develop and implement policies addressing the issues that cause neighborhood decline--poverty, crime, and discrimination.

Book Synopsis Critical Perspectives on Racial and Ethnic Differences in Health in Late Life by : National Research Council
Download or read book Critical Perspectives on Racial and Ethnic Differences in Health in Late Life written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-10-16 with total page 753 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In their later years, Americans of different racial and ethnic backgrounds are not in equally good-or equally poor-health. There is wide variation, but on average older Whites are healthier than older Blacks and tend to outlive them. But Whites tend to be in poorer health than Hispanics and Asian Americans. This volume documents the differentials and considers possible explanations. Selection processes play a role: selective migration, for instance, or selective survival to advanced ages. Health differentials originate early in life, possibly even before birth, and are affected by events and experiences throughout the life course. Differences in socioeconomic status, risk behavior, social relations, and health care all play a role. Separate chapters consider the contribution of such factors and the biopsychosocial mechanisms that link them to health. This volume provides the empirical evidence for the research agenda provided in the separate report of the Panel on Race, Ethnicity, and Health in Later Life.

Book Synopsis Image Analysis, Classification and Change Detection in Remote Sensing by : Morton John Canty
Download or read book Image Analysis, Classification and Change Detection in Remote Sensing written by Morton John Canty and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-03-11 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Image Analysis, Classification and Change Detection in Remote Sensing: With Algorithms for Python, Fourth Edition, is focused on the development and implementation of statistically motivated, data-driven techniques for digital image analysis of remotely sensed imagery and it features a tight interweaving of statistical and machine learning theory of algorithms with computer codes. It develops statistical methods for the analysis of optical/infrared and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery, including wavelet transformations, kernel methods for nonlinear classification, as well as an introduction to deep learning in the context of feed forward neural networks. New in the Fourth Edition: An in-depth treatment of a recent sequential change detection algorithm for polarimetric SAR image time series. The accompanying software consists of Python (open source) versions of all of the main image analysis algorithms. Presents easy, platform-independent software installation methods (Docker containerization). Utilizes freely accessible imagery via the Google Earth Engine and provides many examples of cloud programming (Google Earth Engine API). Examines deep learning examples including TensorFlow and a sound introduction to neural networks, Based on the success and the reputation of the previous editions and compared to other textbooks in the market, Professor Canty’s fourth edition differs in the depth and sophistication of the material treated as well as in its consistent use of computer codes to illustrate the methods and algorithms discussed. It is self-contained and illustrated with many programming examples, all of which can be conveniently run in a web browser. Each chapter concludes with exercises complementing or extending the material in the text.
