Bach adapted several works by Vivaldi---this particular transcription was originally for solo violin and string orchestra. The brilliant showy solo line interspersed with tutti sections lent itself well to the colors of the organ and now to brass. This is a piccolo trumpet duet with the solo line spit among the players. Flashy!

Book excerpt: J.S. Bach adapted several works by Vivaldi-this particular transcription was originally for solo violin and string orchestra. This arrangement of the Concerto features a solo flugelhorn and piano, with the key modified to make it more accessible to flugelhorn players. While the original composition had arrangements for piccolo trumpet and piano, many people struggled with the high range and physical demands of the work. Ulrich's arrangement sought to address this issue, offering a technically challenging piece that showcases the beauty and versatility of the flugelhorn.
Book Synopsis A. Vivaldi/J. S. Bach: Concerto in D Major, RV 230/BWV 972 by : Ming-Jui Liu
Download or read book A. Vivaldi/J. S. Bach: Concerto in D Major, RV 230/BWV 972 written by Ming-Jui Liu and published by . This book was released on 2018-04-22 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A set of two transcriptions based on Vivaldi's Concerto No.9 in D major for solo violin and strings, RV 230, and Bach's harpsichord transcription of it, BWV 972: 1) two guitars and a string quartet, 2) guitar duo. RV 230/BWV 972 has been transcribed to many instrumental settings; however, a version for two guitars and a string quartet is rare, and it adds a new dimension to guitar transcriptions of this work. With the use of this instrumentation, we are able to keep Bach's ideas within the concerto grosso format. That is to say, Bach's additions in his transcription can be realized in a concerto setting with guitar soloists and a string quartet, such that there is an exchange of instrumentation between the tutti and solo passages.Although many guitarists have played lute concertos, such as Vivaldi's Lute Concerto in D major, RV 93, a performance of a concerto grosso piece is not common. The present transcriptions further expand the guitar repertoire of the Baroque concerto grosso form, and they make an important contribution to showing the breadth of the guitar repertoire."Congratulations to Ming-Jui Liu with this important contribution to the duo guitar concerto repertoire. This little known transcription by Bach of a concerto by Vivaldi fits the duo guitar ensemble perfectly. Ming-Jui Liu's transcription sounds natural and is a good fit with a Baroque orchestra." - Jerry Willard, Guitar Professor at Stony Brook University"This transcription of the Concerto in D for 2 guitars and string quartet by Vivaldi/Bach is a welcome addition to the guitar duet repertoire. Rarely do we guitarists get to perform a masterwork such as this in an ensemblesetting. The transcription is a fine balance of careful scholarship and artistic imagination. Bravo Ming Jui-Liu!" - Kevin Gallagher, World Renown Guitarist

Download or read book Experiencing the Violin Concerto written by Franco Sciannameo and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-08-04 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the eighteenth century, violin concertos have provided a showcase for dramatic interplay between a soloist’s virtuosity and the blended sonority of an orchestra’s many instruments. Using this genre to showcase skill and ingenuity, composers cemented the violin concerto as a key genre of classical music and gifted our ears with such timeless masterpieces as Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. In Experiencing the Violin Concerto, Franco Sciannameo draws on his years of scholarship and violin performance to trace the genre through Baroque, Classical, and modern periods. Along the way, he explores the social and personal histories of composers, and the fabulous virtuosi who performed concertos, and audiences they conquered worldwide. Inviting readers to consider not only the components of the music but also the power of perception and experience, Sciannameo recreates the atmosphere of a live performance as he paints a narrative history of technique and innovation. Experiencing the Violin Concerto uses descriptions in place of technical jargon to make the world of classical music accessible to amateur music lovers. As part of the Listener’s Companion series, the volume gives readers an enhanced experience of key works by investigating the environments in which the works were written and first performed as well as those in which they are enjoyed today.

Book Synopsis Music Borrowing and Copyright Law by : Enrico Bonadio
Download or read book Music Borrowing and Copyright Law written by Enrico Bonadio and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-10-19 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ground-breaking book examines the multifaceted dynamics between copyright law and music borrowing within a rich diversity of music genres from across the world. It evaluates how copyright laws under different generic conventions may influence, or are influenced by, time-honoured creative borrowing practices. Leading experts from around the world scrutinise a carefully selected range of musical genres, including pop, hip-hop, jazz, blues, electronic and dance music, as well as a diversity of region-specific genres, such as Jamaican music, River Plate Tango, Irish folk music, Hungarian folk music, Flamenco, Indian traditional music, Australian indigenous music, Maori music and many others. This genre-conscious analysis builds on a theoretical section in which musicologists and lawyers offer their insights into fundamental issues concerning music genre categorisation, the typology of music borrowing and copyright law's ontological struggle with musical borrowing in theory and practice. The chapters are threaded together by a central theme, ie, that the cumulative nature of music creativity is the result of collective bargaining processes among many 'musicking' parties that have socially constructed creative music authorship under a rich mix of generic conventions.
