Book excerpt: Graduation is a time of new beginnings. The old chapter has come to an end, and the time has come to turn the page. The Baccalaureate service offers loved ones a time to pray a blessing over graduates of high school and university and to send them on their way. It reminds them to seek guidance from the Lord as they start down a new path. Unfortunately, in recent times, the Baccalaureate service has fallen out of practice in many circles, foregoing the opportunity to "influence the lives of young people on the threshold of impacting our world," as Pam Williams states in her introduction. Baccalaureate: Guidelines for Inspirational Worship Services to Honor Graduates seeks to reverse this trend, reviving the practice of planting graduates on solid spiritual footing as they chart a new path for their lives. This resource contains everything needed to get a Baccalaureate service up and running. A time line for preparation; sample letters and press releases to churches, schools, and local media; an order of worship; plus sample sermons are all included to ensure that your service is a success. Baccalaureate: Guidelines for Inspirational Worship Services to Honor Graduates is essential to reviving the Baccalaureate service tradition in your community, covering your new graduates in prayer and blessings as they spread their wings and take flight. Pamela D. Williams has been a pastor's wife for over thirty years. A mother and grandmother, she has a B.A. in English from Shipensburg University. She is actively involved in all the ministries at Everett United Methodist Church in Everett, Pennsylvania. A freelance writer, she has had stories published in a variety of publications, including Traveling Calvary's Road: From Ash Wednesday Through Easter (CSS), Decision, Upper Room, and Chicken Soup For The Soul: Stories For A Better World.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This book does an excellent job of tracing the history of the movement and where it stands today. It discusses the political context when these discussions happen in states and the education implications when institutions take on this additional mission. This book may or may not convert those who are concerned about ‘mission creep’ of community colleges, but it sure will give them something to think about. Clearly we cannot continue to do business as we have always done and expect to meet the growing demand for college educated citizens. This book provides some thoughts on how to create a new model going forward and it deserves serious consideration.”—from the Foreword by Carol D’AmicoThe premise of this book is that, in a globalized economy dependent on innovation and knowledge, higher education must provide greater, more affordable access to the acquisition of higher-level skills and knowledge for a greater proportion of the population. The purpose of this book is to open up a debate about the status quo. Should four-year institutions remain the near-exclusive conferrers of the baccalaureate? Or is there a legitimate role for community colleges who already educate over half the undergraduate population of the United States, at lower cost with few barriers to access? The contributors examine the capacities of four-year colleges to deliver training for technical occupations; the ability of community colleges to deliver rigorous, high-quality courses; and issues of access, affordability, faculty development, and responsiveness to changing needs. A chapter devoted to student voices provides the critical perspective of this constituency. The book concludes by describing examples of implementation across the United States, reviewing different models of articulation as well as promising practices that include eliminating the need for transfer altogether.Alternative Pathways to the Baccalaureate provides vital information and new research for policymakers, community college leaders, and scholars of higher education to provoke much-needed debate.Published in association with the Community College Baccalaureate Association

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * Is the conferring of baccalaureate degrees by community colleges a solution to increasing access to and capacity in higher education?* Will the conferring of baccalaureate degrees restrict open access to, and imperil the existing mission of, community colleges?* What are the models and alternative methods of delivery? What are the implications?Breaking away from their traditional mission of conferring only associate degrees and occupational credentials, an increasing number of community colleges have begun seriously to explore and, indeed, in some U.S. states and Canadian provinces, to actually implement offering and conferring bachelor’s degrees. Some leaders see these changes as a natural extension of community colleges’ commitment to access, while others view their awarding of baccalaureate degrees as inappropriate and threatening the basic core values of this unique sector of higher education. This has become a "hot" and controversial topic, not only among community college and university leaders, but also among policy makers, business leaders and students concerned with issues of access, cost and the structure and purposes of post-secondary education. This book analyzes the emerging trend of the community college baccalaureate degree in the United States and Canada in order to contribute to the development of policy. The authors aim to describe, document, and explain this significant development in higher education. They present the background, examples of practice and different models of delivery, develop a common terminology to facilitate discussion, give voice to the views of proponents and critics alike, and include a comprehensive bibliography and set of resources. This book is intended as a catalyst for dialog, action and further research on this critical and emerging trend. It is essential reading for leaders of community colleges, for administrators and planners in higher education concerned with issues of access and articulation, and anyone in public policy grappling with demographic trends and society’s need for educated citizens able to meet the challenges of the future.

Book excerpt: This report suggests that any new performance or curriculum measures affecting schools should only be implemented after proper consultation with key stakeholders and the wider public - something which didn't happen with the English Baccalaureate (EBac). The Committee says that the Government should also have waited until after the conclusion of the National Curriculum Review before introducing the EBac. They want the Government to deliver on its promise in the White Paper - The Importance of Teaching - to use performance tables to put greater emphasis on the progress of every child. The report notes that "certain academic subjects studied at A-level are more valued by Russell Group universities than others", but argues that a "focus on a fairly narrow range of subjects, demanding considerable curriculum time, is likely to have negative consequences on the uptake of other subjects." The Committee does not make recommendations on which subjects should or should not be included but rather encourages the Government to reconsider the EBac's composition when the National Curriculum Review is concluded. The Government should confirm how it will monitor the attainment of children on free school meals in the EBac. The report also calls for further international evidence to inform debate on the merits of the EBac: evidence the inquiry received did not suggest a link, in other countries, between the prescribed study of certain academic subjects and improved attainment and prospects for poorer students. Elsewhere, the report argues that the current arrangements for certification of the EBac should be shelved, as should calls for a Technical Baccalaureate to sit alongside the existing award.

Book excerpt: This book, a blend of practice and theory, shows how the school library can contribute to the success of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. Written for librarians in schools that are applying to offer the program as well as those who already work with it, The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program and the School Library: Inquiry-Based Education provides information and strategies specifically relating libraries to the IBDP. The guide includes information about the IBDP ranging from the subject matrix to unique aspects of the program, such as the Theory of Knowledge course, the Extended Essay requirement, and the Learner Profile. The book also discusses other important features of IB programs, such as internationalism and academic honesty. Finally, it blends theory and practice by providing details and findings from the only two-year research study to follow students and teachers through the IBDP. The study demonstrates the role of the school library in the program, showing how both students and teachers used and valued it. Each chapter concludes with a series of points or strategies for the librarian to reflect upon and/or use as the basis of action.
