Book excerpt: Although many studies have been devoted to Augustine's City of God and its most important theme, viz. the antithesis between the civitas Dei and the terrena civitas, until now no consensus has been reached concerning the sources of this doctrine. Was Augustine decisively influenced by Manichaeism, by (Neo)Platonism, the Stoa or Philo, by the Donatist Tyconius? Or should we look in another direction and refer to preceding Christian, Jewish, and especially to archaic Jewish-Christian traditions? This lucidly written books opens with a survey of the research carried out so far on the aim, structure and central theme of the City of God. Chapter 2 analyzes the essentials of Augustine's life, of his City of God, and of his doctrine of the two cities. Making use of one of the recently discovered letters of Augustine in Chapter 3 the author describes the City of God as an apology and as a catechetical work. Chapter 4 provides an investigation into the possible sources of Augustine's doctrine of the two cities in Manichaeism, in (Neo)Platonism, the Stoa and Philo, and in the works of Tyconius. The idea of two antithetical cities proves to be present most clearly in writings in which, closely related to Jewish thinking, archaic Christian concepts occupy an important place. In a final chapter some pertinent remarks are made on Jewish and Jewish-Christian influences on pre-Augustinian Christianity in Africa.

Download or read book The Fall and Rise of Jerusalem written by Oded Lipschitz and published by Eisenbrauns. This book was released on 2005 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period of the demise of the kingdom of Judah at the end of the 6th century B.C.E., the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians, the exile of the elite to Babylon, and the reshaping of the territory of the new province of Judah, culminating at the end of the century with the first return of exiles--all have been subjects of intense scrutiny during the last decade. Lipschits takes into account the biblical textual evidence, the results of archaeological research, and the reports of Babylonian and Egyptian sources and provides a comprehensive survey and analysis of the evidence for the history of this 100-year-long era. He provides a lucid historical survey that will, no doubt, become the baseline for all future studies of this era.
Book Synopsis Babylon Or Jerusalem? by : Jan Willem Van der Hoeven
Download or read book Babylon Or Jerusalem? written by Jan Willem Van der Hoeven and published by Destiny Image Publishers. This book was released on 1993 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflects on two cities discussed in the Bible: Babylon - representing the efforts and achievements of man, rejection of God, and materialism - and Jerusalem, representing God's intervention and salvation, holiness and righteousness. Ch. 8 (p. 81-106), "The Time of Jacob's Trouble, " describes troubles which befell the people of Israel from the destruction of the Temple to the Holocaust. States that God has not rejected His people: the message of God's love is Zionism, the movement for return to the Land of Israel. Indeed, those Jews who heard this message and came to the Land were spared from the Nazi genocide. Ch. 11 (p. 131-146), "Why Israel Is Hated, " discusses Arabs' and Muslims' hatred of the State of Israel. Contends that this hatred is inspired not only by the question of the land, but is deeply rooted in the ideology of Islam, and is essentially a hatred of the Jews. The main goal of Arab movements which have engaged in fighting Israel, and of the wars of the bordering Arab states with Israel, was not to regain their lost territories but to eliminate the State of Israel from the map.

Book Synopsis The Return from Babylon to Jerusalem C 536 BC-450 BC by : Betty Banaszak
Download or read book The Return from Babylon to Jerusalem C 536 BC-450 BC written by Betty Banaszak and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-06-11 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Return is a sequel to its predecessor The Divided Kingdom which covers Israel's history from the time of Solomon to the Babylonian Captivity and includes all the written prophets of that period. The Return picks up where Cyrus the Great and Darius the Mede conquer Babylon and bring in the new empire under the joint government of the Medes and the Persians. God continues to move mightily in high places, this time effecting the unprecedented liberation of all subjects to return peaceably to their homelands. The timetable is perfect: precisely seventy years later according to Jeremiah's prophecy in Jer. 29:10 "For thus saith the Lord, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place." This Return is called the Restoration Period where God releases the Jews to return and restore all that has been destroyed because of their iniquities. Against the backdrop of some of history's greatest rulers, the Jews are graced with overwhelming subsidies to support the rebuilding of their cherished city Jerusalem and its fallen Temple. Cyrus the Great, Darius the Great, Xerxes the Great and his son, Artaxerxes (Longimanus) the Great, all play key roles in the history of God's chosen people. The Return covers the writings of Ezra, Nehemiah, Daniel, the prophetic words of Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi, and the chilling account of Queen Esther who risks her life to staunch an empire-wide attempt to annihilate her people. The events of this Old Testament period foreshadow the Christian dispensation where the church is progressively released from her spiritual Babylonian captivity through the ministries of Luther, the Wesley brothers, the charismatic revivals of the 20th century with the restoration of spiritual gifts and ministries, and the current emphasis on Christ's second coming. The Restoration leaders and prophets focus on the celebration of Israel's third great feast, the Feast of Tabernacles. The moving of God's spirit today is centered on the fulfillment of this crowning moment where the sons of God who have matured in Christ will appear as the governors of the Millennial Reign of Christ, and bring in an age of peace and harmony in the earth. All this and more are covered in this scholarly, yet easy to read, volume of Biblical truth. The 2 volume 81⁄2" x 11" edition is in larger print and the illustrations are clearer. The single volume 6" x 9" Compact Edition is in smaller print and more portable. 738 pages

Book Synopsis Battle of the Gods: The God of Israel Versus Marduk of Babylon by : Kessler
Download or read book Battle of the Gods: The God of Israel Versus Marduk of Babylon written by Kessler and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is a literary study of the oracles against Babylon in Jeremiah chapters 50-51. They form the climax of the foreign oracle collection in the book of Jeremiah. Included are a survey of early scholarship on these chapters, a discussion of genres and motifs, verbal components, and a succinct survey of the historical context. However, the major emphasis is directed to the dynamic of these oracles as a literary creation with a message. That message is directed to Judah and Israel, who are urged to flee a doomed city with its idolatrous civilization, and to return to their homeland, to Jerusalem, to enter a permanent covenant with YHWH the God of their fathers. Throughout, the literature is discussed in its natural contexts: within the oracle collection in Jeremiah, in comparison with the Isaian oracles against Babylon, and within the canonical book of Jeremiah, demonstrating the climactic position of these oracles.
Book Synopsis Return to Jerusalem by : David Schlossberg
Download or read book Return to Jerusalem written by David Schlossberg and published by . This book was released on 2010-08-11 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Return To Jerusalem recounts the events following the defeat of Israel by Babylon in 586 BCE. The story follows the fortunes of two families through their exile to Babylon, the defeat of Babylon by Persia, and the subsequent return of the Jews to Israel. The Jews rebuilt the city wall and re-established the Temple in Jerusalem, and Israel flourished for the next 500 years. Many figures in the book are historical, for example King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon (modern day Iraq) and Cyrus and Artaxerxes of Persia (modern day Iran). Others are biblical personalities such as Daniel, Ezra and Nehemiah. The clash of Babylonian, Persian and Jewish cultures, attacks on Israel from warring neighbors, and efforts by Jewish leaders to defend and protect their culture are issues which resonate today as they did 2500 years ago.
Download or read book Babylon or New Jerusalem? written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-08-29 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today more than ever literature and the other arts make use of urban structures – it is in the city that the global and universal joins the local and individual. Babylon or New Jerusalem? Perceptions of the City in Literature draws a map of the concept of the city in literature and represents the major issues involved. Contributions to the volume revisit cities such as the London of Wordsworth, Dorothy Richardson and Virginia Woolf or Rilke’s Paris, but also travel to the politics of power in Renaissance theatre at Ferrara and to deliberate urban erasures in post-apartheid South Africa. The texts represented range from Renaissance plays to contemporary novels and to poetry from various periods, with references to the visual arts, including film. The role of memory in contemplating the city and also specific urban metaphors developed in literature, such as boxing – the square ring – and jazz are also discussed. The transformation of cities by legislation on cemeteries, by lighting or by projects of urban renewal are the subject of articles, while others reflect on images of the city in worlds specifically forged by writers like William Blake and James Thomson. The contributors themselves live and work in many varied cities, thus representing a dynamic and real variety of critical approaches, and introducing a strong theoretical and comparative element.

Book Synopsis Mystery Babylon - When Jerusalem Embraces the Antichrist: An Exposition of Revelation 18 and 19 by : Chris White
Download or read book Mystery Babylon - When Jerusalem Embraces the Antichrist: An Exposition of Revelation 18 and 19 written by Chris White and published by . This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth." - Revelation 17:18 Which city is this that reigns over all the kings of the earth? Rome? New York? Mecca? There are over 90 Characteristics given in the book of Revelation about the city of Mystery Babylon, and none of these three cities meets all of the criteria. But there is one city that does...or should I say will. Too often people look for the city of Mystery Babylon in history, or in their present day, as opposed to what the scriptures say we will see in the future. The Bible tells us exactly which city will be the capital city of the Antichrist in the last days, it tells us the city that will promote the Antichrist's worship to the rest of the world, and the city in which the Antichrist will institute the greatest persecution of all time. That city is Jerusalem. The city of Mystery Babylon will be Jerusalem when it embraces the Antichrist as if he was their long awaited Messiah. The reason that she is referred to as a "harlot" is the same reason she was referred to as a harlot hundreds of times in scripture, because she is committing spiritual adultery. "How is the faithful city become an harlot! - Isaiah 1:21a Consider just a few similarities between Mystery Babylon and Jerusalem: 1.) Mystery Babylon is said to kill the prophets in Revelation 18:24.Yet the only city that has ever been recorded as killing the prophets is Jerusalem: "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets..." - Matthew 23:37 2.) The Bible says that Mystery Babylon will be held accountable for ALL the righteous blood shed on the earth. Yet Jesus said the exact same thing about Jerusalem: "That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth..." - Mat 23:35a This is just scratching the surface. In the last days the Antichrist will seek to convince the Jews that their Messiah has finally come, he will seek to make them, and the rest of the world think that the kingdom age has begun. This is the only view of Mystery Babylon that can withstand a meticulous verse by verse examination. *Find out about the "seven hills" and why the bible refers to them as "kings" in almost every bible translation. *Find out why every item brought to Mystery Babylon are used for temple construction, daily sacrifice, and a vast, worldwide pilgrimage system.
