Book excerpt: Connie Burns knew one thing for sure: she never wanted kids. After 15 years of marriage, though, lots of things have changed. Her best friend moved out of state, remarried and is having a new baby. Connie is also dealing with the realities of life with lupus. All the changes make her rethink having a baby, but her husband and her doctor are against it. Both encourage her to test the waters by being a foster parent first to see how it goes, since stress is the worst thing for her lupus. Not only is Connie a typical "type A" personality, but she has a high-powered career, a bedroom-sized closet full of shoes, a penchant for perfection and a compact sports car. Though she's not exactly primed for motherhood, she agrees they should foster to bolster her chances of becoming a mother. When four-year-old Desi is placed with them, Connie's life turns upside down and her heart is quickly lost. But parenting isn't for sissies and this little girl comes with more baggage than most. Desi's mother is in hospice dying of cancer. Not only does Connie face traumas like hosting a birthday party for a 5-year-old, she also has to learn on the fly how to help Desi deal with a new school, a new family and the devastating death of her mother. As they take Baby Steps toward building a life together, Connie has to learn that life is messy, shoes aren't mission critical, and an imperfect life can be full of perfectly wonderful surprises.

Book excerpt: It was bad enough that her partners left shy store owner Dana Malone to scout new retail space with devastatingly handsome Realtor C. J. Turner. Then—wham!—her way-out wayward cousin literally left a baby on Dana's doorstep, and a birth certificate listing C.J. as the father. Raising her ultracute nephew was a dream come true, and as she and C.J. shared baby duties and close quarters until paternity was established, Dana kept her cool. But every time the commitment-phobe looked at Dana, the yearning in his deep blue eyes provoked a meltdown. Would what started as a small step for Dana's store turn into a giant leap for Dana's love life?

Book excerpt: A revised and updated edition of this popular step-by-step guide to baby development When Baby Steps was first published in 1993, it was named one of the 10 Best Parenting Books by Child magazine. Now, this popular guide to baby's first two years has been completely revised to incorporate the latest research on the young child's developing brain and behavior, including brand-new material on temperament, language, and memory. Baby Steps pinpoints the important events in an infant's life, examining them month by month for the first year, and in three-month intervals during the second year. Beginning with a "miniguide" to early development, the book goes on to a cover such important subjects as sleep, crying, colic, motor development, social play, and toilet training. Developmental hints and alerts throughout the book provide parents with a clear understanding of the full range of "normal" behaviors for each phase, helping to allay common anxieties. An accessible, concrete guide to infant and toddler behavior, Baby Steps takes much of the guesswork out of parenting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on Michael Todd's Crazy Faith comes the official workbook to discovering a complete trust in God and stepping out in life-changing faith. Faith is a word that's common in both our culture and the church. It's a word you've probably used many times. But what does it actually mean? How can you know if your life is being guided by faith or by fear? And how can you learn the kind of trust in God that seems...well, crazy? Crazy is a relative term, after all. There are many things that seem normal today that at one point in time sounded crazy. But our see-it-to-believe-it generation tends to have a hard time exercising true faith—one that steps out, takes action, and sees mountain-moving results. Many of us would rather play it safe and stand on the sidelines. But it's crazy faith that helps us see God move and reveals his promises. Noah looked crazy when he started building the ark . . . until it started raining. In the Crazy Faith Workbook, bestselling author and pastor Michael Todd takes you deeper into how to step out in faith and dive into the purposeful life of trusting God for the impossible. Each of the eleven lessons in this workbook unpacks a potential stage in the faith journey—from baby faith to crazy faith—to help you: Identify where you are in your personal faith journey. Learn how to see God's reality and be alert to his voice. Develop a deeper level of trust in God. And inspire crazy faith in others. Packed with Scripture reading, prayers, empowering stories, reflection questions, and plenty of room for you to write your responses—this workbook will help you see the beauty of faith and that it's never too late to build it. Even if we have to start with baby faith or maybe faith, we can become empowered to let go of our lazy faith, trust God through our hazy faith, and learn to live a lifestyle of crazy faith.

Current corporate governance regulations and international standards lead many organisations, big and small, to the creation of an information technology (IT) security function in their organisational chart or to the acquisition of services from the IT security industry. More often than desired, these teams are only useful for companies’ executives to tick the corresponding box in a certification process, be it ISO, ITIL, PCI, etc. Many IT security teams do not provide business value to their company. They fail to really protect the organisation from the increasing number of threats targeting its information systems. IT Security Management provides an insight into how to create and grow a team of passionate IT security professionals. We will call them “securiteers”. They will add value to the business, improving the information security stance of organisations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discrete logarithm problem based on elliptic and hyperelliptic curves has gained a lot of popularity as a cryptographic primitive. The main reason is that no subexponential algorithm for computing discrete logarithms on small genus curves is currently available, except in very special cases. Therefore curve-based cryptosystems require much smaller key sizes than RSA to attain the same security level. This makes them particularly attractive for implementations on memory-restricted devices like smart cards and in high-security applications. The Handbook of Elliptic and Hyperelliptic Curve Cryptography introduces the theory and algorithms involved in curve-based cryptography. After a very detailed exposition of the mathematical background, it provides ready-to-implement algorithms for the group operations and computation of pairings. It explores methods for point counting and constructing curves with the complex multiplication method and provides the algorithms in an explicit manner. It also surveys generic methods to compute discrete logarithms and details index calculus methods for hyperelliptic curves. For some special curves the discrete logarithm problem can be transferred to an easier one; the consequences are explained and suggestions for good choices are given. The authors present applications to protocols for discrete-logarithm-based systems (including bilinear structures) and explain the use of elliptic and hyperelliptic curves in factorization and primality proving. Two chapters explore their design and efficient implementations in smart cards. Practical and theoretical aspects of side-channel attacks and countermeasures and a chapter devoted to (pseudo-)random number generation round off the exposition. The broad coverage of all- important areas makes this book a complete handbook of elliptic and hyperelliptic curve cryptography and an invaluable reference to anyone interested in this exciting field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An entertaining book “filled with inspirational anecdotes” (People) about second acts in life and reinventing yourself from beloved television actress Patricia Heaton—Emmy Award–winning star of Everybody Love’s Raymond, The Middle, Patricia Heaton Parties, and most recently, Carol’s Second Act. Patricia Heaton is one of TV’s most recognizable and beloved moms. She’s won three Emmys, two for her starring role as Debra Barone on the long-running comedy Everybody Loves Raymond, and followed that career-making role with another gem as Frances Heck on the popular sitcom The Middle. She returned to television as the lead in the series Carol’s Second Act, which followed divorced fifty-year-old Carol Kenney (played by Heaton), who after raising two children and retiring as a teacher decides to finally pursue her dream of becoming a doctor. Patricia Heaton knows what it’s like to stage a second act and navigate pivotal transitions in life. When Heaton’s children left the nest, she found herself in a new and unfamiliar stage of life, compelling her to evaluate which direction to take next. Heaton discovered she had the time pursue passions that were previously placed on hold, both personally and professionally. She made her move and took a step forward in her career and for the first time, Heaton was not only the star of her own show, but also the executive producer. She now finds her greatest fulfillment in using her influence to support humanitarian efforts as a Celebrity Ambassador for World Vision, the world’s largest non-governmental organization. She and her husband support their work in poverty relief around the globe, something that was planted in her heart long ago. Through her own experience, Heaton became curious about other people’s stories of second-act transitions and ways to offer support in the process. Now, in Your Second Act, she shares wisdom from her own personal journey as well as insight from stories of numerous people across the country. From work to health, to love and more, the results are heartwarming, inspiring, and surprisingly relatable. “If you’ve been wanting to start your second act, Patricia Heaton may have just what you need” (Today). Filled with light-hearted anecdotes and pragmatic steps, Heaton shows us that midlife doesn’t have to be about crisis when you focus on the opportunity. After all, it’s never too late, or too early to stage your second act.

Jay Shetty, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Think Like a Monk 'Joshua and Ryan have penned an urgent manifesto for the growing movement away from the material and towards the meaningful. An important book for our current moment.' Cal Newport, New York Times bestselling author of A World Without Email and Digital Minimalism AS SEEN ON THE NETFLIX DOCUMENTARIES MINIMALISM & LESS IS NOW How might your life be better with less? Imagine a life with less: less stuff, less clutter, less stress and debt and discontent - a life with fewer distractions. Now, imagine a life with more: more time, more meaningful relationships, more growth and contribution and contentment - a life of passion, unencumbered by the trappings of the chaotic world around you. What you're imagining is an intentional life. And to get there, you'll have to let go of some clutter that's in the way. In Love People, Use Things, Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus move past simple decluttering to show how minimalism makes room to reevaluate and heal the seven essential relationships in our lives: stuff, truth, self, money, values, creativity and people. They use their own experiences?and those of the people they have met along the minimalist journey?to provide a template for how to live a fuller, more meaningful life. Because once you have less, you can make room for the right kind of more.
