In Baby Governor, this American wunderkind takes the reins with youthful energy and finds that power isn't always what it seems. Picking up where The Candy Stripers and The Nannies left off, this third instalment goes all the way as Sam becomes the youngest-ever Governor of his state. With nappies, bottles and three willing nannies added to the mix, Sam's improbable political journey turns into the ride of a lifetime. Sam and his nannies savour their moment in the sun and grope for change in a world turned upside down by 9/11 and the challenges of high office. An insider's glimpse into the lifestyles of famous and powerful people, Baby Governor strips away the carefully crafted veneer of American politicians. This final book in an autobiographical trilogy is written by a New York Times bestselling author and lifelong infantilist.

Book excerpt: The time-tested, gentle, and successful method that introduces children to potty training as early as six months While parents around the world successfully potty train their children well before preschool age, in the United States, we've moved away from this early introduction. However, there's no evidence that later is better--in fact, there's even significant reason to believe that later can be detrimental. Written by a respected child psychologist, Early-Start Potty Training shows why the early-start method is preferable to the commonly used readiness method. Waiting until children show signs of readiness can hold them back from preschool, cost a fortune in diapers, and lead to health problems. The early-start method avoids these concerns by starting the process of training as early as six months old. This easy-to-follow program provides you with: Time-tested training tips for introducing toddlers--and even infants--to the potty Methods for combating common problems of training delay A troubleshooting plan for moving toddlers from diapers to potty independence Hints on how to overcome accidents and build confidence in children

Book excerpt: A guide to all kinds of addiction from a star who has struggled with heroin, alcohol, sex, fame, food and eBay, that will help addicts and their loved ones make the first steps into recovery “This manual for self-realization comes not from a mountain but from the mud...My qualification is not that I am better than you but I am worse.” —Russell Brand With a rare mix of honesty, humor, and compassion, comedian and movie star Russell Brand mines his own wild story and shares the advice and wisdom he has gained through his fourteen years of recovery. Brand speaks to those suffering along the full spectrum of addiction—from drugs, alcohol, caffeine, and sugar addictions to addictions to work, stress, bad relationships, digital media, and fame. Brand understands that addiction can take many shapes and sizes and how the process of staying clean, sane, and unhooked is a daily activity. He believes that the question is not “Why are you addicted?” but "What pain is your addiction masking? Why are you running—into the wrong job, the wrong life, the wrong person’s arms?" Russell has been in all the twelve-step fellowships going, he’s started his own men’s group, he’s a therapy regular and a practiced yogi—and while he’s worked on this material as part of his comedy and previous bestsellers, he’s never before shared the tools that really took him out of it, that keep him clean and clear. Here he provides not only a recovery plan, but an attempt to make sense of the ailing world.

Book excerpt: PULITZER PRIZE WINNER • A “vivid and devastating” (The New York Times) portrait of an indomitable girl—from acclaimed journalist Andrea Elliott “From its first indelible pages to its rich and startling conclusion, Invisible Child had me, by turns, stricken, inspired, outraged, illuminated, in tears, and hungering for reimmersion in its Dickensian depths.”—Ayad Akhtar, author of Homeland Elegies ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The New York Times • ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The Atlantic, The New York Times Book Review, Time, NPR, Library Journal In Invisible Child, Pulitzer Prize winner Andrea Elliott follows eight dramatic years in the life of Dasani, a girl whose imagination is as soaring as the skyscrapers near her Brooklyn shelter. In this sweeping narrative, Elliott weaves the story of Dasani’s childhood with the history of her ancestors, tracing their passage from slavery to the Great Migration north. As Dasani comes of age, New York City’s homeless crisis has exploded, deepening the chasm between rich and poor. She must guide her siblings through a world riddled by hunger, violence, racism, drug addiction, and the threat of foster care. Out on the street, Dasani becomes a fierce fighter “to protect those who I love.” When she finally escapes city life to enroll in a boarding school, she faces an impossible question: What if leaving poverty means abandoning your family, and yourself? A work of luminous and riveting prose, Elliott’s Invisible Child reads like a page-turning novel. It is an astonishing story about the power of resilience, the importance of family and the cost of inequality—told through the crucible of one remarkable girl. Winner of the J. Anthony Lukas Book Prize • Finalist for the Bernstein Award and the PEN/John Kenneth Galbraith Award

Book excerpt: More and more women are being sent to prison: at the time when this book was written UK numbers had doubled over the last five years, and the Prison Reform Trust called this 'a rate of increase without precedent in the modern era.' Indeed, the figures for convicted women shows an even greater increase - 76% according to the National Association of Probation Officers, more than twice the increase for men. Though the media focuses on high profile prisoners like Myra Hindley and Rosemary West, most women become 'invisible' as soon as they pass through the prison gates and are subsumed into a world that is predominantly masculine and insensitive to their very different needs. The author spent the past five years visiting twelve of the 16 prisons that take women, interviewing prisoners and, more unusually, those whose job it is to care for them - prison officers, education, probation and healthcare staff, chaplains and counsellors. In a book that is deliberately accessible to the general reader as well as to the prison professional, she vividly recreates the realities of prison life for a woman at the end of the twentieth century, as conditions worsen with overcrowding, staff shortages and expenditure cuts. Some of Devlin's findings will shock as well as inform: she describes the over-use of medication as a means of control; the violence resulting from drug misuse; the plight of ethnic minority and foreign national women, and the self-mutilation and suicide attempts of women in desperate need of help.

She has clearly thoroughly enjoyed her life with all its ups and downs and has learnt that as hard as it is at times, life must still go on. Having been the proud owner of six hairdressing salons and being a florist, she is an accomplished businesswoman who has taken every opportunity that came her way. She has travelled widely and experienced how different people live; it has given her a broad outlook on life, which comes through in her writing. Maria has had six husbands, all of whom brought her happiness and heartache in differing degrees. It is patently obvious that she had experienced far more in her life than you or I ever will.

Book excerpt: To Londoners, the years 1840 to 1870 were years of dramatic change and achievement. As suburbs expanded and roads multiplied, London was ripped apart to build railway lines and stations and life-saving sewers. The Thames was contained by embankments, and traffic congestion was eased by the first underground railway in the world. A start was made on providing housing for the "deserving poor." There were significant advances in medicine, and the Ragged Schools are perhaps the least known of Victorian achievements, in those last decades before universal state education. In 1851 the Great Exhibition managed to astonish almost everyone, attracting exhibitors and visitors from all over the world. But there was also appalling poverty and exploitation, exposed by Henry Mayhew and others. For the laboring classes, pay was pitifully low, the hours long, and job security nonexistent. Liza Picard shows us the physical reality of daily life in Victorian London. She takes us into schools and prisons, churches and cemeteries. Many practical innovations of the time—flushing lavatories, underground railways, umbrellas, letter boxes, driving on the left—point the way forward. But this was also, at least until the 1850s, a city of cholera outbreaks, transportation to Australia, public executions, and the workhouse, where children could be sold by their parents for as little as £12 and streetpeddlers sold sparrows for a penny, tied by the leg for children to play with. Cruelty and hypocrisy flourished alongside invention, industry, and philanthropy.

Book excerpt: Harmon Penitentiary in Dublin is Europe's most dangerous high-security jail, holding an explosive and terrifying mix of drug lords, terrorists, violent sex offenders, gunrunners, and gang leaders. For Chief Medical Officer Dr. Frank Ryan, working amongst the felons is a great medical and personal challenge---the last doctor was murdered---that he rises to every day. One night, he receives a summons from the jail to attend to an inmate who has supposedly committed suicide in J wing, but as he steps out of his apartment, Ryan is badly beaten, kidnapped, drugged, interrogated, and held prisoner for six days. Upon his release, Ryan is unable to make sense of who got to him and what might have caused the attack. His ordeal is denied by his superiors, and to make matters worse, his girlfriend Lisa has disappeared without a trace. Desperate to find Lisa, who he now realizes might not have been as straight with him as he thought, the doctor gets involved in a daring plan to spring a hard-boiled criminal from Harmon in exchange for the information he badly needs, and he soon realizes that his ordeal is more than just a personal issue. A wide net of criminals and several international governments seem to be involved, and Ryan must now uncover a far-reaching conspiracy that appears to have been hatched at Harmon, inside J wing, where a mysterious inmate is kept in single confinement . . . Carson has crafted a fast-paced, white-knuckle thriller filled with vividly painted scenes of prison riots, tough-as-nails criminals and government officials, and a hero who has taken about as much as he can stomach and is ready to fight back.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central purpose of this book is to help change the terms of the debate on animism, a classic theme in anthropology. It combines some of the finest ethnographic material currently available (including firsthand research on the Chachi of Ecuador) with an unusually broad geographic scope (the Americas, Asia, and Africa). Edward B. Tylor originally defined animism as the first phase in the development of religion. The heyday of cultural evolutionism may be over, but his basic conception is commonly assumed to remain valid in at least one respect: there is still a broad consensus that everything is alive within animism, or at least that more things are alive than a modern scientific observer would allow for (e.g., clouds, rivers, mountains) It is considered self-evident that animism is based on a kind of exaggeration: its adherents are presumed to impute life to this, that and the other in a remarkably generous manner. Against the prevailing consensus, this book argues that if animism has one outstanding feature, it is its peculiar restrictiveness. Animistic notions of life are astonishingly uniform across the globe, insofar as they are restricted rather than exaggerated. In the modern Western cosmology, life overlaps with the animate. Within animism, however, life is always conditional, and therefore tends to be limited to one’s kin, one’s pets and perhaps the plants in one’s garden. Thus it emerges that "our" modern biological concept of life is stranger than generally thought.
