Book excerpt: We have all been brought up listening to stories from our grandparents, parents, and many others. Stories have an innate capacity to mould us, to shape our thinking, to inspire us, to motivate us, to coach us and impress our subconscious mind metaphorically. Storytelling is, and has always been, an important part of the solution for simulating positive behavioural changes. And when the stories are real-life stories, the benefits get amplified manifold. The emotional strings attached to real human stories bring credibility, engagement, and buy-in. The second book in the AKHYAYIKAS series (Akhyayika means a fable, a short episodic narrative, or an anecdote) is a compendium of 100 short stories of people who dared to dream. Given the rough twist of fate, they decided to pick themselves up and make successes of themselves in their chosen life purpose. All the characters in the stories have one thing in common: they believed in the power of their dreams. The purpose of life is to live a life of purpose!

Every year, many anticancer drug candidates are discovered and synthesized, but the major challenge lies in identifying, characterizing and evaluating their efficacy. The aim of this Research Topic, "New Mechanisms for Anti-Cancer Drugs" is to collect a group of publications focused on novel chemical compounds exhibiting new modes of actions and/or new target proteins to fulfill their cytotoxic activity on cancer cells. In this context, we will also be pleased to consider studies on drug repurposing, including approved, discontinued, and shelved drugs, when anti-cancer activity results from an unexpected mode of action.

Today, agile software development has penetrated to most IT companies across the globe, with an intention to increase quality, productivity, and profitability. Comprehensive knowledge is needed to understand the architectural challenges involved in adopting and using agile approaches and industrial practices to deal with the development of large, architecturally challenging systems in an agile way. Agile Software Architecture focuses on gaps in the requirements of applying architecture-centric approaches and principles of agile software development and demystifies the agile architecture paradox. Readers will learn how agile and architectural cultures can co-exist and support each other according to the context. Moreover, this book will also provide useful leads for future research in architecture and agile to bridge such gaps by developing appropriate approaches that incorporate architecturally sound practices in agile methods. - Presents a consolidated view of the state-of-art and state-of-practice as well as the newest research findings - Identifies gaps in the requirements of applying architecture-centric approaches and principles of agile software development and demystifies the agile architecture paradox - Explains whether or not and how agile and architectural cultures can co-exist and support each other depending upon the context - Provides useful leads for future research in both architecture and agile to bridge such gaps by developing appropriate approaches, which incorporate architecturally sound practices in agile methods

Book excerpt: Cancer is still a major public health concern, and it is regarded as one of the leading causes of mortality globally. Despite significant advances in biotechnologies, developing practical and innovative small molecule drugs remains a difficult, time-consuming, and expensive task that necessitates collaborations from many experts in multidisciplinary fields such as computational biology, drug metabolism, and clinical research, among others. Therefore, new drug development procedures that save time and cost while increasing efficiency are in high demand. In silico screening in combination with molecular simulations, has become an increasingly important aspect of modern drug development processes. Understanding ligand-protein interaction is critical in all areas of drug design and discovery. Computational approaches, such as molecular docking, molecular dynamics simulations, pharmacophore modeling, and QSAR, etc. are efficient tools for obtaining insights on structure-function relationships for small molecules and/or medicinal compounds with target proteins, and are widely used in the identification and optimization of leads. The goal of the drug discovery process is to predict a drug candidate's metabolic fate in order to build a link between pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics and to identify the drug candidate's possible toxicity. The advancement of in silico techniques in recent years has enabled researchers to collect more trustworthy data. This Research Topic will focus on the use and application of computational methods that can aid in the drug design of medicinal compounds targeting various proteins for cancer management, which is a critical requirement in the pharmaceutical sectors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pakistan is unlike most other countries in the emerging world. It is one of the two nations – the other being the state of Israel – founded on the basis of religion. Although it was created to provide a homeland for the Muslim community of British India, in its original form it was able to accommodate only about half of the people of Islamic faith who lived in the subcontinent. Pakistan’s birth in 1947 resulted in one of the largest movements of people in human history when some 14 million people left their homes, with 8 million Muslims leaving India for what is now Pakistan and 6 million Hindus and Sikhs moving in the opposite direction. This was the first large-scale incidence of ethnic cleansing the world was to witness. This fourth edition of Historical Dictionary of Pakistan covers its history through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 700 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Pakistan.

Book excerpt: Nanotechnology for Oil-Water Separation: From Fundamentals to Industrial Applications explores how nanotechnologically engineered solutions (modified meshes, carbon nanotubes, functionalized fabrics, textile or hybrid elements for bio-membranes, nanofibrous materials, and many more) can be used to remediate current damage to the environment for a better tomorrow. Design and fabrication of low-cost, effective and environmentally friendly micro/nanomaterials exhibiting strong wettability properties and mechanical and chemical stability are examined, along with current research developments and possible future directions, making this book an essential read for researchers, advanced students, and industry professionals with an interest in nanotechnology and sustainable (bio)technologies. The increasing amounts of industrial substances released by petrochemical, steel or gas-generating plants and food-processing factories into water poses an ever more serious environmental threat. Due to the significant adverse impact on the natural ecosystem, aquatic organisms and human health, the scientific community has made its priority to find sustainable methods to separate oil-water mixtures. - Provides an "all-in-one" reference on oil-water separation using cutting-edge, cost-effective, and environmentally-friendly nanotechnology-based solutions - Sheds light on the proper disposal, management and treatment processes of petroleum wastewater - Includes a discussion on new developments and findings, as well as challenges and concerns with an indication of where the field may move in coming years
