Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the possibility of using azimuthal Walsh filters as an effective tool for manipulating far-field diffraction characteristics near the focal plane of rotationally symmetric imaging systems. It discusses the generation and synthesis of azimuthal Walsh filters, and explores the inherent self-similarity presented in various orders of these filters, classifying them into self-similar groups and sub-groups. Further, it demonstrates that azimuthal Walsh filters possess a unique rotational self-similarity exhibited among adjacent orders. Serving as an atlas of diffraction phenomena with pupil functions represented by azimuthal Walsh filters of different orders, this book describes how orthogonality and self-similarity of these filters could be harnessed to sculpture 2D and 3D light distributions near the focus.

Book excerpt: Observing offset-dependent seismic reflectivity has proven to be a valuable exploration tool for the direct detection of hydrocarbons. This monograph provides a comprehensive review of reflection coefficients and their approximations in isotropic media, followed by an in-depth discussion of reflection amplitudes in anisotropic media. No prior knowledge of seismic anisotropy is assumed, and considerable effort is spent to introduce wave propagation and medium parameterizations useful for surface seismic applications in the presence of anisotropy. The first anisotropic model discussed is transverse isotropy with a vertical axis of symmetry (VTI media), typically used to describe shale sequences. Then the study of VTI reflection coefficients is extended to transverse isotropy with a horizontal axis of symmetry (HTI) - the symmetry system that describes a system of parallel vertical cracks. Analysis of the "Shuey-type" approximate HTI P-wave reflection coefficient makes it possible to devise fracture-detection algorithms based on the inversion of azimuthal differences of the P-wave AVO gradient. The monograph also presents analysis of shear- and converted-wave reflection coefficients for HTI and orthorhombic models, discusses practical aspects of applying the azimuthal AVO analysis, and mentions promising recent results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complex internal structure of the Sun can now be studied in detail through helioseismology and neutrino astronomy. The VI Canary Islands Winter School of Astrophysics was dedicated to examining these powerful new techniques. Based on this meeting, eight specially-written chapters by world-experts are presented in this timely volume. We are shown how the internal composition and dynamical structure of the Sun can be deduced through helioseismology; and how the central temperature can be determined from the flux of solar neutrinos. This volume provides an excellent introduction for graduate students and an up-to-date overview for researchers working on the Sun, neutrino astronomy and helio- and asteroseismology.

Book excerpt: Blade Element Rotor Theory This book presents an extension of the conventional blade element rotor theory to describe the dynamic properties of helicopter rotors. The presented theory focuses on the accurate mathematical determination of the forces and moments by which a rotor affects its rotorcraft at specified flight conditions and control positions. Analyzing the impact of a blade's non-uniform properties, the book covers blade twisting, the non-rectangular planform shape of a blade, and inhomogeneous airfoil along the blade. It discusses inhomogeneous induced airflow around a rotor disc in terms of the blade element rotor theory. This book also considers the impact of flapping hinge offset on the rotor's dynamic properties. Features • Focuses on a comprehensive description and accurate determination of the rotor's aerodynamic properties • Presents precise helicopter rotor properties with inhomogeneous aerodynamic properties of rotor blades • Considers inhomogeneous distribution of induced flow • Discusses a mathematical model of a main helicopter rotor for a helicopter flight simulator This book is intended for graduate students and researchers studying rotor dynamics and helicopter flight dynamics

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world of maps is a fascinating intersection of art and science, where the globe's vast complexities are distilled into flat representations we can hold, analyze, and understand. At the heart of this process lies a critical but often overlooked element: GIS projections. These mathematical methods enable us to transform the curved surface of the Earth into a flat map, preserving various attributes like area, shape, distance, and direction. While the concept may seem technical or abstract, the choice of projection can profoundly impact the way we interpret geographic information. In this book, " From Globe to Grid: The World of GIS Projections," we embark on a journey to demystify the intricate world of GIS projections. Our goal is to provide both newcomers and seasoned professionals with a clear, concise understanding of how different projections work, why they matter, and how they can be applied effectively in various contexts. We begin by exploring the fundamental principles behind map projections, laying a foundation for the more complex topics that follow. Each chapter delves into a specific type of projection—cylindrical, conic, azimuthal, and beyond—explaining their unique characteristics and appropriate applications. Through vivid illustrations, real-world examples, and practical tips, we aim to transform this seemingly technical subject into something accessible and engaging. Whether you're a geographer, a cartographer, a GIS professional, or simply someone with a curiosity about maps, this book is designed to be your guide through the maze of GIS projections. By the end of our journey together, you'll not only have a deeper appreciation for the art and science of mapmaking but also a toolkit of knowledge to apply in your own work and explorations. Mapping the world is an endeavour that has shaped human history, and GIS projections are the threads that weave this grand tapestry. We invite you to explore these threads with us, discovering how they shape our understanding of the world and empower us to visualize our planet in new and insightful ways. Welcome to the world of GIS projections—where the globe comes to life on the map!!
