This book was released on 2000 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aesopian Literary Dimensions analyzes the evolution of national thinking in Azerbaijani literature from 1920 to 1990. It traces the history of literary trends and methodological patterns--particularly the clandestine means and methods of expression in national literature--in Azerbaijani literature. Maliheh Tyrrell has fashioned a unique book that uncovers the ways national Azerbaijani thinking outwardly adapted itself to the themes and political strategies of the dominant Soviet ideology. The work reveals and discusses the range of literary techniques, ranging from nonverbal visual methods to symbolic themes, employed by Azerbaijani authors to refute the official optimism of Soviet propaganda and communicate a distinct sense of Azerbaijani "otherness."

Book excerpt: The Azerbaijani people have been divided between Iran and the former Soviet republic of Azerbaijan for more than 150 years, yet they have retained their ethnic identity. The collapse of the Soviet Union and the emergence of an independent Azerbaijan have only served to reinforce their collective identity. In Borders and Brethren, Brenda Shaffer examines trends in Azerbaijani collective identity from the period of the Islamic Revolution in Iran through the Soviet breakup and the beginnings of the Republic of Azerbaijan (1979-2000). Challenging the mainstream view in contemporary Iranian studies, Shaffer argues that a distinctive Azerbaijani identity exists in Iran and that Azerbaijani ethnicity must be a part of studies of Iranian society and assessments of regime stability in Iran. She analyzes how Azerbaijanis have maintained their identity and how that identity has assumed different forms in the former Soviet Union and Iran. In addition to contributing to the study of ethnic identity, the book reveals the dilemmas of ethnic politics in Iran.

Book excerpt: Shlapentokh undertakes a dispassionate analysis of the ordinary functioning of the Soviet system from Stalin's death through the Soviet collapse and Russia's first post-communist decade. Without overlooking its repressive character, he treats the USSR as a "normal" system that employed both socialist and nationalist ideologies for the purposes of technological and military modernization, preservation of empire, and expansion of its geopolitical power. Foregoing the projection of Western norms and assumptions, he seeks to achieve a clearer understanding of a civilization that has perplexed its critics and its champions alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Siyavush of Our Century" was written by political visionary Mammad Amin Rasulzadeh (1884-1955) who headed the Musavat Party and helped set up the Azerbaijan parliamentary democratic republic in 1918, the first such republic of Turks and Muslims in the eastern world. The turmoil of the times, however, proved too much for Rasulzadeh's young government. On April 25, 1920, Bolshevik troops crossed into Azerbaijan and entered Baku on April 28. They demanded the resignation of Azerbaijan's Parliament and set up their own government. The fledgling democracy, in only its 23rd month, collapsed immediately. Azerbaijan remained under communist rule until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. "Siyavush of Our Century" is a unique work of politics & history, philosophy & literature founded upon the ancient myths and legends of the Turkik peoples. It was written in July 1920 and first published in Istanbul in 1925. It is widely recognised as a classic by the people of Azerbaijan.

Book excerpt: This volume of historical Indian-Perso-Arabic-Ottoman Turkish Literature, in the form of raunchy, ribald and salacious ballads, verses, couplets & doggerels is conceived for a readership whose second language is English. It is intended for national and international circulation as a convenient instrument for the spread of bygone Indo-Perso-Arabic-Turkish poetic thought and process. This will explain the lack of a parallel native text and the restriction of selected poets/authors and their works. The purpose of this book is to raise awareness about the richness, profoundness and impact of Indo-Perso-Arabic - Turkish Literature on the belletristic intellectual literary development. The translations and transliterations intended to cross-over three distinct and radical language systems of the world - Sanskrit, Persian and Turkish - into ubiquitous American English, and it is the work of over three years.
