Book excerpt: A crime is more or less heinous, according as we are under greater or less obligations to the contrary. This is self-evident; because it is herein that the criminalness or faultiness of any thing consists, that it is contrary to what we are obliged or bound to, or what ought to be in us. So the faultiness of one being hating another, is in proportion to his obligation to love him. The crime of one being despising and casting contempt on another, is proportionably more or less heinous, as he was under greater or less obligations to honour him. The fault of disobeying another, is greater or less, as any one is under greater or less obligations to obey him. And therefore if there be any being that we are under infinite obligations to love, and honour, and obey, the contrary towards him must be infinitely faulty. Our obligation to love, honour, and obey any being, is in proportion to his loveliness, honourableness, and authority; for that is the very meaning of the words. When we say any one is very lovely, it is the same as to say, that he is one very much to be loved. Or if we say such a one is more honourable than another, the meaning of the words is, that he is one that we are more obliged to honour. If we say any one has great authority over us, it is the same as to say, that he has great right to our subjection and obedience. But God is a being infinitely lovely, because he hath infinite excellency and beauty. To have infinite excellency and beauty, is the same thing as to have infinite loveliness. He is a being of infinite greatness, majesty, and glory; and therefore he is infinitely honourable. He is infinitely exalted above the greatest potentates of the earth, and highest angels in heaven; and therefore he is infinitely more honourable than they. His authority over us is infinite; and the ground of his right to our obedience is infinitely strong; for he is infinitely worthy to be obeyed himself, and we have an absolute, universal, and infinite dependence upon him. So that sin against God, being a violation of infinite obligations, must be a crime infinitely heinous, and so deserving of infinite punishment.- Nothing is more agreeable to the common sense of mankind, than that sins committed against any one, must be proportionably heinous to the dignity of the being offended and abused; as it is also agreeable to the word of God, I Samuel 2:25. "If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him;" (i.e. shall judge him, and inflict a finite punishment, such as finite judges can inflict;) "but if a man sin against the Lord, who shall entreat for him?" This was the aggravation of sin that made Joseph afraid of it. Genesis 39:9. "How shall I commit this great wickedness, and sin against God?" This was the aggravation of David's sin, in comparison of which he esteemed all others as nothing, because they were infinitely exceeded by it. Psalm 51:4. "Against thee, thee only have I sinned."-The eternity of the punishment of ungodly men renders it infinite: and it renders it no more than infinite; and therefore renders no more than proportionable to the heinousness of what they are guilty of.

A principle of justice is one, the other the profit we may derive therefrom. All wise men, therefore, agree that justice and profit are the two most powerful inducements to move our wills to any undertaking. Now, though men seek profit more frequently than justice, yet justice is in itself more powerful; for, as Aristotle teaches, no worldly advantage can equal the excellence of virtue, nor is any loss so great that a wise man should not suffer it rather than yield to vice. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preached at Enfield, Connecticut on July 8, 1741, this is perhaps the greatest sermon ever preached in America—and is certainly among the most well known. Owing to its forthright dealing with God’s wrath and His intense hatred of sin and the sinner, it is also one of the most controversial. Indeed, for more than three-quarters of the sermon Edwards lays down a relentless stream of the most vivid and horrifying descriptions of the danger facing unregenerate men. While it is difficult to read such graphic language, there is abundant hope in the sermon’s conclusion. Edwards puts it this way, “And now you have an extraordinary opportunity, a day wherein Christ has thrown the door of mercy wide open and stands calling and crying with a loud voice to poor sinners.” While those who would rather ignore God’s justice in favor of His mercy condemn Edwards and his sermon, those who were present and actually heard him preach that day reacted in a decidedly different manner. According to the diary of Reverend Stephen Williams who attended the sermon, “Before the sermon was done there was a great moaning and crying through the whole House, ‘what shall I do to be saved; oh, I am going to hell, etc.’” The diary goes on to indicate that Edwards had to interrupt his sermon and come down to minister to those who were under such awful conviction. And so, in spite of what the scoffers might think or say, “the amazing and astonishing power of God” was manifested among the people that day—with many falling not into the hands of an angry God, but into the arms of a mighty Savior.

Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Book excerpt: When you finish reading this practical work by Zachary Crofton on biblical repentance, you might say to yourself, “I’ve never repented.” That’s the kind of impact he is going to have on you if you read this work even in a cursory manner. In order to have a deeper walk with Christ, repentance is at the heart and life of the sinner who walks comfortably with God. However, repenting, reordering and realigning your fallen mind to sit in connection with God’s will, is not as simple as praying a prayer, as some would have you believe. Crofton says that repentance is a “sense of, and sorrow for sin, as committed against God.” The sinner must spread himself before the Law of God to survey the entire course of his own life. He needs to weigh himself in the balance of God’s perfection. The Gospel-sinner knows he is imperfect, and in view of God’s Law, which shows him his sin, he comes away not just lacking in some spiritual and moral goodness, but sees the utter viciousness of his nature against God’s prescription for holiness. He then sentences himself as accursed of God, agreeing that the Law is right and good, and he knows that he is “bound” to experience God’s Divine fury for his sin in hell by God’s justice which is just and good. He not only sees that he is a true sinner before God, but sorrows under his understanding of sin, and is “ashamed of such a sad and sinful state.” He comes to learn that repentance is a supernatural gift given to him from God, and that he must turn from sin and confess his sin. This kind of repentance is necessary to remove the wrath and judgment of God and to “answer the call of the gospel,” which requires everyone to repent. Crofton explains the characteristics of true biblical repentance from 2 Corinthians 7:11. There are eight characteristics that he covers: godly sorrow, care, clearing of ourselves, indignation, fear, vehement desire, zeal and revenge against sin. And, finally, Crofton demonstrates 10 points which show how you, reader, might gain godly repentance, completely soaking the sinful heart in the blood of Jesus, with great speed, and earnestly looking for repentance only at the hands of God. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of this excellent book "The Prodigal Son or the Sinner's Guide to God" was Michael Mller, a priest of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer. It is based on the parable of The Prodigal Son (Luke 15, 11-32), the story of that son that wanted his father's estate to spend it loosely and for that purpose he went on a journey to a distant country far away from his father. That story is illustrated in this volume, and as its illustrations are but chapters in our own lives, it is hoped that their perusal will prove as pleasant as it may be profitable to those prodigal children most deeply concerned in the narrative, who have abandoned their Father's household, taken up their abode in a strange and far-off land, squandered their heavenly inheritance, and instead of the Bread of Life find their only sustenance in the husks of swine. This is the same journey full of difficulties and sorrows that the soul undertakes when it strays away from God, from the true religion. The soul starts wandering about in darkness and doubt, and sinks into blank despair but at last the light of truth flashes upon the mind. This book can be this light for the sinner that wants to be guide back to God. It is a guide for those who feel lost and abandoned in this world and looking for a light that brings hope and joy to their tired souls. For this purpose the author goes deepens in subjects like sin, contrition, prayer, the final judgement, heaven and hell.

Book excerpt: In this timely evangelical work that should be shared with everyone, Vincent states that "sin will have a very bad end." Original and actual sin will send a man, woman, or child to hell unless they are converted by Jesus Christ. All that have gone into another world are sensible of it, though few in this world perceive it. When the servants of sin have received their wages, which is death, then they will know their sorrow. They will know what kind of master they have served, and what pains they foolishly took for that misery, which they should have taken pains to have prevented. Vincent explains Romans 14:10, "We shall stand before the judgment seat of Christ." He covers the Judge (God), those who will be judged (all men), things which are to be judged (all thoughts, actions and deeds) and the certainty of judgment. He also covers Matthew 11:23, "And thou Capernaum, which are exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell!" Here he gives application and a warning: turn to God, or be turned into hell. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the first thing a person who desires to be saved should do? Byfield teaches that he should first inquire, "What should he do to be rid of those many sins he is guilty of?" To be rid of such sins is being rid of their danger and guilt, and from their power and dominion. For many people, for many Christians, this is something they have not yet done. In this work, Byfield has gathered for us, out of the whole Bible, a catalog of those sins which God requires we repent of. They are sins we must take special notice of so that we can confess them and avoid them. Byfield describes these sins in the expressed words of the Bible so that you might see the Lord himself describing our offenses. Byfield surveys the entire bible and demonstrates particular offenses plainly proven to be sins. He shows by expressed Scriptures what course we may distinctly take to be rid of all our sins. This is a course that cannot fail us, being grounded on the most evident biblical directions, which God himself has prescribed to us. What Christian or God-fearer would not want to be rid of all their sins? Who has made such a catalog of them to repent effectively by the power of God's Spirit? This work is a comfortable and safe path through the word of God that leads directly to Jesus Christ. When a Christian follows the evident directions of God’s Word in these weighty matters, he walks safely. He walks in the good way, the way of life, and the way of peace. In this path Byfield assures us that the reader will see and experience the salvation of God through Christ. To follow these directions soundly, is to keep our souls, and in this, all God’s ways will be mercy and truth to us. This is not a scan or facsimile, has been updated in modern English for easy reading and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Book excerpt: How do you find and maintain a balance between faith, grace, and works? On the one hand, there's grace, and on the other, a new morality that weighs motive equally with action. If you have never struggled with your own moral weaknesses, if you have never looked in the mirror and wondered whether a believer was staring back at you, if you have never felt a twinge of terror while reading "Not everyone who says to be 'Lord, Lord", will enter into the kingdom of heaven", then this book is not for you. But if you struggle with faith and want to know what genuine Christian faith looks like, "Righteous Sinners" will help you examine faith, grace, and works and the conflicting teaching that abounds on this issue to help you come to a clearer understanding of what it means to be a "righteous sinner".
