Book excerpt: Pierre Bauchez was born to a Puerto Rican mother and a French father. Even though he was born in France, a secular country, he grew up in the small island of Puerto Rico with its deeply religious culture. Growing up Catholic in Puerto Rico, Pierre was always intrigued by religion. Throughout his life growing up in Puerto Rico and then completing his medical training in the mainland United States, Pierre lived a few key experiences that led him to reexamine religion and ultimately find a more fulfilling way to live his life. İAy Bendito!, which means "oh blessed," is an all-purpose expression commonly used by Puerto Ricans. It has many different meanings depending in which context it is used. This phrase emblemizes Puerto Rico's deeply religious culture. This book narrates the story of a young man growing in a religious society who after several key experiences decides to break from tradition and family expectations to find his own path and ultimately find happiness. İAy Bendito! explores the often-overlooked dangers of being deeply religious and proposes a better alternative. This book explores some of the same doubts that many people who grow up in deeply religious Hispanic cultures grapple with every day. Questioning religion in a traditional religious Hispanic household is a taboo subject that Pierre tackles head on. Hopefully, this book paves the way for future independent thinkers growing up in similar religious environments.

Book excerpt: Recently revised to include the latest current events, this classic reference presents the historical, social, political, and cultural aspects of Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico, an island rich with culture and national pride, continues to inspire debate over its designation as a commonwealth of the United States. This updated edition of a popular encyclopedia captures important historical, social, political, and cultural developments of the oldest colony in the world, up to and including the region's current status in relation to the United States. The fascinating work is full of facts, figures, and narratives of the struggles, achievements, and creations of the Puerto Rican people. Essays highlight the area's economy, geography, religion, education, language, radio, television, social media, and films. A focus on the contributions of key historical figures showcase the stories of Ramon Power y Giralt, the first envoy to the Spanish Courts; and Juan Mari Brás, founder of the Puerto Rican Socialist Party, among others. The second edition features recent developments in the commonwealth, including the election of its first female governor, the introduction of the first sales tax, and the financial crisis that shut down schools.

Book excerpt: “I think in Spanish / I write in English / I want to go back to Puerto Rico / but I wonder if my kink could live / in ponce, mayagúez and Carolina.” Born in Puerto Rico but raised in New York City, Tato Laviera’s poetry reflects his bilingual, bicultural Nuyorican existence while celebrating the universality of the human condition and his European, indigenous and African roots. Tato Laviera explores identity, community, urban life, oppression and much more in these multi-layered pieces that spanned his too-short life. Many deal with themes specific to the immigrant experience, such as the sense of alienation many feel when they are not accepted in their native or adopted land. In “nuyorican,” he writes about returning to his native island, only to be looked down upon for his way of speaking: “ahora regreso, con un corazón boricua, y tú / me desprecias, me miras mal, me atacas mi hablar.” Music and dance, an integral part of Puerto Rican life, permeate Laviera’s verse and pay homage to the Caribbean’s African roots. “i hear merengue in French Haiti / and in Dominican blood, / and the guaracha in yoruba, / and the mambo sounds inside the plena.” Including all of his previously published poems and some that have never been published, these are bold expressions of hybridity in which people of mixed races speak a combination of languages. He skillfully weaves English and Spanish, and frequently writes in Spanglish. The importance of language and its impact on his identity is evident in poems entitled “Español,” “Bilingüe” and “Spanglish.” Known for his lively, energetic poetry readings, Bendición represents an internationally recognized poet’s life work and will serve to keep Tato Laviera’s words and the issues he wrote about alive long after his death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collaborative book project centering the liberative theopoetics practiced by a new generation of scholars of color What is theopoetics? Once a field dominated by white liberals in the ivory tower, this embodied form of theology has flourished in the work of a new generation of scholars of color. In this groundbreaking book edited by Oluwatomisin Olayinka Oredein and Lakisha R. Lockhart-Rusch, a diverse team of theologians shows how theopoetics can be practiced “in color.” Featuring unconventional and artistic forms of religious reflection, this collection demonstrates how theology can become accessible when it reflects the embodied experiences of marginalized people and communities. These creative contributions defy the limitations of the white, Eurocentric academy, including such works as: • an explanation on the use of experimental theater to express theological theses • a guide to spiritual disciplines for metaphorical cyborgs seeking liberation • a meditation on the theological import of Filipino potlucks • a literary reflection on the meaning of religion to Black boys and men Diverse in scope and radical in perspective, this bold volume reclaims the liberative potential of theopoetics. Scholars and students of theology and the arts will discover inspiring new methodologies and fresh ideas in these pages. Book excerpt: "Since its first publication over forty years ago Puerto Rico: Freedom and Power in the Caribbean by Gordon K. Lewis has established itself, and even today, remains the definitive book on that Caribbean island. Lewis treats the subject historically and descriptively; on the one hand, it is an account of Puerto Rico as a colony, first under Spain and after 1898, under the United States. On the other hand, it is a systematic analysis of contemporary Puerto Rican life, including its politics, economic organisation and socio-political make-up, which is as relevant for this new edition as it was forty years ago. The book is also an in-depth attempt to show the political, social, cultural and even the psychological dimensions of American imperialism, rather than a mere case study of US Federalism or as a so-called 'showcase of democracy'."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise for Victor Hernández Cruz: "Bilingual since childhood, Mr. Cruz writes poems about his native Puerto Rico and elsewhere which often speak to us with a forked tongue, sometimes in a highly literate Spanglish. . . . He's a funny, hard-edged poet, declining always into mother wit and pathos." —The New York Times Book Review "A fluent sensualist and rhythmic stylist." —The Washington Post "Like a salsa band leader coaxing and challenging dancers to more and more complex steps, Cruz dares readers with dizzying polyrhythms, polymetric stanzas, backstepping word structures and a sense of improvisation." —Publishers Weekly Beneath the Spanish tracks the way that languages intersect and inform each other, and how language and music shapes experience. Moving across landscapes from Puerto Rico to Manhattan to Morocco, these poems are one man's history and a song that begs to be performed. From "Ay Bendito, Que Vaina": Cuneiform tablet inside, The maracas pencil orality of remembered places, the night stars, the hammock, yucayeques like beehives, a river crab came to my feet to talk with its mouth legs, trembling like castanets. Victor Hernández Cruz is the author of several collections of poetry including, most recently, The Mountain in the Sea and In the Shadow of Al-Andalus. Featured in Bill Moyers's Language of Life series, Cruz's collection, Maraca, was a finalist for the Lenore Marshall and Griffin Poetry Prizes. He divides his time between Morocco and his native Puerto Rico.

Book excerpt: The book continues to resonate with readers in part because it mirrors the experiences of other groups, both past and more recent immigrant groups; and in part because, when the authors wrote their essays, they spoke honestly about issues they cared about but others tended to ignore. As the editors' new introductions to each article indicate, the anthology has also served as a spring from which other works have developed.
