Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Party Machine amplifies critical function of political parties as stabilising platform required to water the garden of democracy. Perpetual education is crucial to oiling the engine of ideologically committed political party. Progressively inclined party should be a breeding ground for recruiting transformational, interactional, innovative, and character-based leaders. Strategic planning and action research will go a long way in identifying and solving multifarious problems of the people in the republic. The work discountenances the unprincipled defections of party members to other party simply because of lack of integrity and ideological commitment.

Book excerpt: For over two centuries, Western scholars have discussed African philosophy and culture, often in disparaging, condescending terms, and always from an alien European perspective. Many Africans now share this perspective, having been trained in the western, empirical tradition. Makinde argues that, particularly in view of the costs and failings of western style culture, Africans must now mold their own modern culture by blending useful western practices with valuable indigenous African elements. Specifically, Makinde demonstrates the potential for the development of African philosophy and even African traditional medicine. Following the lead of a number of countries with government policies of incorporating indigenous medicine with orthodox Western medicine, Makinde argues that traditional African practices should be taken seriously, both medically and scientifically. Further, he charges African scholars with the responsibility of investigating these and other elements of traditional African culture in order to dispel their mystery and secrecy through modern research and useful publications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Olusegun Mimiko competed in the gubernatorial elections on April 14, 2007, against the incumbent Olusegun Agagu. The Independent Electoral Commission INEC, departing from the norm, announced election results in Abuja, the federal capital, declaring the incumbent the winner. Mimiko contested this decision at the election tribunal and was adjudged winner at the tribunal and the Court of Appeal on February 23, 2009. The Appeal Court, liked the court of first instance, cited massive irregularities in the 2007 election, and ordered that Agagu be replaced by Mimiko as governor. Mimiko then became the first and only member of the Labour Party to win gubernatorial office in Nigeria. Governor Olusegun Mimiko contested and won re-election on October 20, 2012, for a second term, making him the first governor in Ondo State to win a second term election. Mimiko stood in that election as the Labour Party candidate for Nigeria’s Ondo State and polled the highest votes. The court drama that pitched Dr. Rahman Olusegun Mimiko against Dr. Olusegun Kokumo Agagu lasted for two years, 2007 to 2009. It consumed the energy of hundreds of lawyers and the attention of millions of Nigerians. On the one hand was the Mimiko team, considered the under-dog in the struggle, with only the rightness of their cause as their succour, and their belief that somehow, God was on their side. On the other hand was the Agagu team, the incumbent power supported by federal might and endless resources in money, material and confidence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the cataclysmic decade that is the focus of this book, Nigeria was subject to several near-death experiences. These began when the country nearly tore itself apart after the northern-led military government annulled the results of a 1993 presidential election won by the southerner Moshood Abiola, and ended with former military ruler General Olusegun Obasanjo being the unlikely conduit of democracy. This mini-history of a nation's life also reflects on three mesmerizing protagonists who personified that era. First up is Abiola: the multi-billionaire businessman who had his election victory voided by the generals who made him rich, and who was later assassinated. General Sani Abacha was the mysterious, reclusive ruler under whose watch Abiola was arrested and pro-democracy activists (including Abiola's wife) were murdered. He also oversaw a terrifying Orwellian state security operation. Although Abacha is today reviled as a tyrant, the author eschews selective amnesia, reminding Nigerians that they goaded him into seizing power. The third protagonist is Obasanjo, who emerged from prison to return to power as an elected civilian leader. The penumbra of military rule still looms over Nigeria nearly twenty years after the soldiers departed, and key personalities featured in this book remain in government, including the current president.
