Book excerpt: Discover hidden practices, secretly transmitted in authentic Zen lineages, of using body, speech, and mind to remove obstructions to awakening. Though Zen is best known for the practices of koan introspection and "just sitting" or shikantaza, there are in fact many other practices transmitted in Zen lineages. In modern practice settings, students will find that Bodhidharma's words "direct pointing at the human mind" are little mentioned, or else taken to be simply a general descriptor of Zen rather than a crucial activity within Zen practice. Reversing this trend toward homogeneous and superficial understandings of Zen technique, Hidden Zen presents a diverse collection of practice instructions that are transmitted orally from teacher to student, unlocking a comprehensive path of awakening. This book reveals and details, for the first time, a treasury of "direct pointing" and internal energy cultivation practices preserved in the Rinzai Zen tradition. The twenty-eight practices of direct pointing offered here illuminate one's innate clarity and, ultimately, the nature of mind itself. Over a dozen practices of internal energetic cultivation galvanize dramatic effects on the depth of one's meditative attainment. Hidden Zen affords a small taste of the richness of authentic Zen, helping readers grow beyond the bounds of introspection and sitting to find awakening itself.

Book excerpt: The great way does not have to be a difficult journey. The Buddha-nature or spirit within is fundamentally pure. Many people end up trying to sit their way to emptiness to purify what is already divine. I say less sitting and more awareness in this book for a very important reason. We can reach a point where the mind can rest naturally much sooner by making a direct connection with nature. Some sitting meditation is always required, but we must practice continual awareness with our eyes open, even while walking to the post office. Sitting around like a stone Buddha is not the path I am sharing. I hope that Remember Zen captures the subtleties of enlightenment well. It has the potential to remove decades or even lifetimes of practice from one who is ready to change their consciousness now. When we understand the three main components of our being better, it is much easier to see the problems a mind spinning out of control with desires and life-issues can bring. Buddhism puts a lot of thought into the concept of emptiness or voidness. I call it oneness in the book. Buddha never mentioned God or the prime creator for a simple reason--if we rely on an external force we will never look within and attain. He knew that when more people began to see the interdependence of everything they would naturally sense the oneness of it all. We are connected to all that is and when we are ready, the cosmos assists us in our awakening.

Book excerpt: A “straightforward, simple, and wise” guide to living an awakened life through mindfulness and meditation (Jack Kornfield, author of A Path with Heart) We can use whatever life presents to strengthen our spiritual practice—including the turmoil of daily life. What we need is the willingness to just be with our experiences—whether they are painful or pleasing—and open ourselves to the reality of our lives without trying to fix or change anything. But doing this requires that we confront our most deeply rooted fears and assumptions in order to gradually become free of the constrictions and suffering they create. Then we can awaken to the loving-kindness that is at the heart of our being. While many books aspire to bring meditation into everyday experience, Ezra Bayda's Being Zen gives us practical ways to actually do it, introducing techniques that enable the reader to foster qualities essential to continued spiritual awakening. Topics include how to cultivate: • Perseverance: staying with anger, fear, and other distressing emotions. • Stillness: abiding with chaotic experiences without becoming overwhelmed. • Clarity: seeing through the conditioned beliefs and fears that "run" us. • Direct experience: encountering the physical reality of the present moment—even when that moment is exactly where we don't want to be. Like Pema Chödrön, the best-selling author of When Things Fall Apart, Ezra Bayda writes with clear, heartfelt simplicity, using his own life stories to illustrate the teachings in an immediate and accessible way that will appeal to a broad spectrum of readers.

Book excerpt: When Roshi Philip Kapleau returned to the United States in 1966, after thirteen years of training in Japan with two of the country's greatest masters of Zen, he "did not come home empty-handed -- he brought us a living word of Zen," Kenneth Kraft has said. The first Westerner fully and naturally at home with Zen, Roshi Kapleau has made it his life's work to translate Zen Buddhism into an American idiom, to take Zen's essence and plant it in American soil. Four decades later, the seeds of Zen that Roshi Kapleau planted have blossomed. Zen flourishes and Roshi Kapleau continues to help people find enlightenment and fulfillment within, not outside, their daily lives. "True awakening," Roshi Kapleau has said, "is not a 'high' that keeps one in the clouds of an abstract oneness, but a realization that brings one solidly down to earth into the world of toil and struggle." Kapleau has written a number of books in his lifetime, The Three Pillars of Zen the most well known among them, but the heart of his work, his teachings to his students, has never before been made available. Awakening to Zen extracts the vital threads of Roshi Kapleau's teachings and braids them into a strong yet supple cord that readers may follow toward a deeper understanding of the enlightened life. Roshi Kapleau's warm, sometimes humorous but always grounded lessons touch on every aspect of daily reality; they capture his power, too, to transform the lives of not just practicing Buddhists, but all people who seek to experience in a more authentic way the bond they share with the world around them. One way or another, Roshi Kapleau has spent the past forty-three years of his life helping make Zen practice and its fruits accessible to anyone of sincere intent. Awakening to Zen offers a crucial and never-before-published aspect of his life's work.

Book excerpt: The Ten Commandments tell us how to behave, but they don't say much about the inner awareness from which outer behavior springs. Do the right thing, of course-- but better yet, find your inner light and doing the right thing becomes as natural as breathing. THE ZEN COMMANDMENTS offers ten powerful nudges toward that light. Drawing on sources from Zen stories and the Bible to jazz and rock 'n' roll, from American movies to Tibetan meditative techniques, Dean Sluyter steers clear of dogma and emphasizes what works-- a sort of spiritual street smarts. He shows that the state of boundless freedom and happiness isn't something distant or exotic, but is right here, while you're stuck in traffic or taking out the trash. And revisiting the Ten Commandments, he shows how on a deeper level they offer some surprising enlightenment wisdom of their own. “The book is extremely well written and joyously entertaining.” —Publishers Weekly “With sparkling clarity and wit, Sluyter's ten suggestions lay out the practical essentials of the path. My suggestion is: listen to this guy.” —Lama Surya Das, author of Awakening the Buddha Within “Dean Sluyter clearly presents simple but profound ways to live one's life consciously and skillfully. He teaches that the source of universal truth not only rests in the heart of every one of us, but is the essence of what ultimately brings us true happiness and freedom. This is a wonderful book with rich wisdom and deep insight.” —Rabbi David Cooper, author of God Is a Verb “No matter what your religion (or lack of it), this book shows how to live the kind of life people ache for. It turns out to be pretty simple.” —Jane Cavolina, co-author of Growing Up Catholic

With Trust in Awakening, Zen and Theravada Buddhist teacher Stephen Doetsu Snyder presents a fresh and powerful reworking of the 7th century Zen poem, the Xin Xin Ming. This poem has guided and inspired serious Zen practitioners on the path to Awakening for centuries. Structuring its stanzas in koan-like meditations, Snyder interprets the poem’s directions to seeing the Absolute, the source, fully manifesting in each of us—to Awakening. In addition, Snyder gives an insightful line-by-line commentary and questions us after each stanza, provoking an internal examination. He points us in the direction of the Absolute, in its many expressions, the source of all universes and realization. This distinct approach creates the space for us to dwell on each line, open ourselves to its significance, and take another step on the path of no path. Trust in Awakening transmits the reality of the Absolute while encouraging us to keep following its map, unfolding the path to Awakening.

Book excerpt: Do you want to become more relaxed and awaken your powers? Mindfulness meditation is the best way to expand your mind power while being more calm and grounded. The mind holds the greatest power over the body. Its what we think and do everyday that has the greatest effect on our body, our enlightenment, healing, and concentration. Find out exactly what mindfulness meditation is and how using simple breath can make you more mindful. The ancient tools and art handed down from the traditions of buddhism, zen, taoism, and hinduism can be the best way to awaken your power in the modern world. In this book you'll find out:What is mindfulness? What is mindfulness meditation? How to achieve peace of mindImportance of practicing awarenessScientific and personal experience confirms that mindfulness meditation is an excellent way to get in touch with your zen. How does meditation and reflection work to create zen?"Care reflection presents to every one of us sorts of advantages. It decreases our pressure and uneasiness, improves our consideration, lessens meddlesome circling musings (those that we would prefer not to cause us to feel lacking and don't leave rapidly). It is a procedure that is successful for the treatment of uneasiness, sorrow and a few sorts of fears, (for example, agoraphobia). Likewise, with training, we will quit relating to our musings and sentiments, and we will see them all the more equitably. We are not our contemplations, nor are we answerable for what we think, yet for what we do."What is mindfulness meditation and its long-term goal? The book seeks to answer how exactly we can create an inner oasis from the stress of the everyday. The basis of the meditation is to practice awareness and watch how the mind contemplates for peace. Using the breath to create more inner peace."Thoughts arise in mind and sensations occur in the body, but rather than getting caught up in these distractions, and the idea is simply to observe them, not to comment, and to return to the subject of meditation. Over time it is possible to become a passive observer of all the feelings and sensations that come and go--without getting attached to them--which creates a calm acceptance of the way things are."
