Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "At Cambridge, as an undergraduate of St. John's, I realized that, more than anything else, I wanted to fly.A lifelong fascination and love of flying and aircrafts is fuel for this engaging autobiography by G J Christopher Paul, CB, DFC; a man bitten by the aviation bug at an air display at the age of four, and thereafter a devotee. His remarkable RAF career was followed by an eventful civilian career in aviation, which saw him organize rallies at places such as Sywell, encouraging 'flying for fun'. Both halves of his flying life are detailed here in chronological order and in his own words. Minor additions have been made to offer technical descriptions to readers unfamiliar with Paul's aviation vocabulary. The fifty year span of his career covered an incredible period of aviation history; from gaining his license in the 1920s to his retirement in the 1970s, there was virtually no iconic or, for that matter, obscure aircraft that Christopher Paul did not fly. Included in the book is an extensive appendix in which Paul details, again in chronological order, every aircraft type he flew during his career. It is a veritable roll of honor of every conceivable aircraft, both British built and International, across arguably the most important period of aviation development.Interwoven with his own career progression and experiences are world events and situations. Coupled with this we can clearly see the development of aircraft over a period of over fifty years. Eloquently written, this is the autobiography of a man who described flying a Spitfire as having 'one's own wings'; the thrill of flight is translated here, and the effect is equally thrilling. A lively account of a life in the skies. "

Winston Groom's rich narrative tells their intertwined stories - - from broken homes to Medals of Honor (all three would receive them) ; barnstorming to the greatest raid of World War II; front-page triumph to anguished tragedy ; and near death to ultimate survival - - as all took to the sky, time and again, to become exemplars of the spirit of the "greatest generation."--Back cover.

Book excerpt: OUT OR WAR-TORN SKIES, A LEGENDARY PILOT IS BORN Royal Leonard (1905-1962) flew in and out of aviation history - just on the edge of fame. His exploits mirror important developments in the Golden Age of American Aviation (1925-1941) and the Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945). "If Royal's story were told in a novel," says long-time China pilot and author Felix Smith, "nobody would believe it all could have happened to one man." Royal learned his craft at the West Point of the Air in San Antonio, Texas. As a Western Air Express night mail pilot, he pioneered blind flying along the treacherous Rocky Mountains. As a TWA pilot, he introduced celestial navigation. An early Airline Pilots Association (ALPA) officer, he fought for mail plane safety at the cost of his job. He flew the Lockheed Orion in which Wiley Post and Will Rogers later crashed and attributed their fatal accident to a surprising cause. During the 1930s, a handful of elite pilots were racers. Jackie Cochran selected Royal as a copilot for the MacRobertson Race of the Century between England and Australia. Royal also competed in the Bendix Death Race in a Gee Bee Widow Maker. Before World War II, Royal worked for the Chinese warlord known as the Young Marshal who kidnapped Nationalist dictator Chiang Kai-shek and changed the course of Chinese history. Royal provided Communist political commissar Chou En-lai his first plane ride and later served as Chiang Kai-shek's personal pilot. During the war, Royal's roles were unique. Claire Chennault chose him to command the Flying Tigers Bomber Group. Royal briefed Colonel Jimmy Doolittle on Chinese landing fields for the Tokyo Raid. Royal, Chennault and Madame Chiang Kai-shek planned their own Tokyo bombing raid. Royal survived flying the Skyway to Hell over the Hump for China National Aviation Corporation. No wonder after a perilous flight war correspondent Martha Gellhorn described Royal as her "hero." Author's Biography The author has spent twenty years uncovering a rich trove of private documentary sources about the Forgotten Aviator. Martin is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the College of William and Mary and has an M.A. in history from the University of Washington and a J.D. from the University of California - Berkeley. He is a retired Administrative Law Judge and resides in Sacramento, California with his wife, Carolyn.

Book excerpt: Lucky Aviator is a book for aviators, adventurers and anyone who enjoys living life by the seat of their pants - or just wishes they had. A life-long obsession with speed and flight has led Charles Dalglish - great nephew of Air Chief Marshall Sir Trafford Leigh-Mallory - through some extraordinary situations. Lucky Aviator is the true story of a life peppered with pranks, explosions and death-defying moments. Charles Dalglish's enthusiasm for flight began at an early age and has never faltered. At public school his only interest was in creating a 750 Special. After engineering college and many speeding adventures it was not long before he had his own Autogiro. Forever speeding and breaking conventional rules, Charles was banned from driving. His solution: learn to fly a helicopter in a week and commute by air instead. With minimal instruction Charles has flown Sipa, Cessna, Auster, Jodel and a Robinson helicopter often in the most hazardous conditions and has cheated death on countless occasions. Always ready for a new challenge, Charles could not pass up the opportunity of re-building a Notar helicopter, "the ultimate toy of anyone's dreams." The project turned out to be both thrilling and painful as on his first flight, this uninsured $1,000,000 machine confronted a Wedgetail Eagle. The decision to sell up and take his young family to Australia seemed to pay dividends as the Dalglish family took root in Little Hartley on the Great Western Highway. Selling Maules, the short take off aircraft, gained Charles friends all over Australia but life's journey once again experienced bumps as the Council tried to destroy Charles's airstrip. The battles with the Council finally led to court and the toll on Charles' health took him through the cancer experience.

Book excerpt: Fool's Paradise is a blend of real events; fiction; fantasy; mystery and incredible adventures that tells the life story of Bobby Ferguson aka: Bobby McAllister, from early childhood and a near-death experience that delusionally introduces him to a spectral pirate who tells him about the mythical treasure ship, "The Prize."As if one ghost in his life is not enough, a teenage McAllister meets an apparitional woman who not only re-enforces his belief in the existence of The Prize but; convinces him of his destiny to locate the mysterious ship.Working for a corrupted politician; a stint as a producer for a television station, his chance meeting of an established and world-famous treasure hunter, and even a stretch in an Arizona prison, all combine to put him out to sea in search of The Hacha del Oro, a documented treasure ship that went down in a mighty hurricane off the coast of the Florida Keys over 250 years ago. In spite of all the adversity involved, McAllister's experience on the Hacha Project proves to be successful and he confides to Granger Lawton, his true quest is "The Prize," a treasure he fully expects the reluctant and leery Lawton to help him find. Determined to act as McAllister's Devils' advocate, Lawton agrees to help in the search of The Prize. Their investigation takes them to Seville, Spain, the home of the Archives of the Indies, and perhaps, wherein lays the answers to the unsolved two-hundred and fifty-year old mystery. While touring the Spanish countryside, McAllister comes across a dusty and deserted old mansion that contains one-hundred year old evidence of the identity of the haunting apparition that has been McAllister's obsession since his teen-age years. The portrait of a beautiful woman distracts his pursuit of The Prize and sends him on what Lawton characterized as a "wild-goose-chase" up the Oronoco River in Venezuela. On a regal, yet struggling cattle ranch outside Ciudad, Bolivar, a gentleman rancher, whose daughter steals McAllister's heart, entertains McAllister, and Lawton. It is Lawton who stumbles on evidence of not only the existence of the The Prize, but its actual location. It takes McAllister, however, to finally locate the cargo she carried by carefully piecing together all of the clues, evidence, cryptic conditions of the island priestess, and even the phantoms of his past to lead him to the treasure...
