Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vivid and candid picture of a British woman's life in Thailand in the 1950s: the politics, the coups d'état, summary executions, cholera epidemics, religion, etiquette, manners, food, dress, education, and much more. From 1957 to 1961 Averin and Geoffrey Hinton were attached to the British Embassy in Bangkok. Geoffrey was officially a diplomat with the rank of 1st Secretary, but this was cover for his role as MI6 intelligence officer, though the letters give no hint of what he was really up to.Throughout the posting, Averin wrote round-robin letters to the family back in England, and most of these letters have survived. They show Averin throwing herself with gusto into the role of diplomat's wife, running a household with six or seven servants and their families, entertaining dignitaries, teaching English, mixing with royalty, all amidst an endless whirl of cocktail and dinner parties. This volume, Part 3, contains the letters dated January 1959 to March 1961.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The maturation of nanotechnology has revealed it to be a unique and distinct discipline rather than a specialization within a larger field. Its textbook cannot afford to be a chemistry, physics, or engineering text focused on nano. It must be an integrated, multidisciplinary, and specifically nano textbook. The archetype of the modern nano textbook
Download or read book Red Mafiya written by Robert I. Friedman and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2009-11-29 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past decade, from Brighton Beach to Moscow, Toronto to Hong Kong, the Russian mob has become the world's fastest-growing criminal superpower. Trafficking in prostitutes, heroin, and missiles, the mafiya poses an enormous threat to global stability and safety. Today, the mafiya controls over 80 percent of Russia's banks and has siphoned off billions of dollars in Western loans and aid, almost certainly derailing the chance for a stable democracy there. But that is just the beginning, for the mafiya is now in every corner of the United States and has infiltrated some of the banks and brokerage firms that handle your money. And American law enforcement is just waking up to this staggering problem. No journalist in the world knows more about the mafiya than Friedman, who has covered the Russian mob for Details, Vanity Fair, and New York. At great peril to himself, Friedman interviewed many of the top mobsters, who were stunningly candid about their activities. In their depravity, ruthlessness, and brutality, Russian gangsters make the traditional Mafia look like choirboys. Red Mafiya will appeal to anyone interested in the Mob.

Book Synopsis The Nature and Challenges of Indigenous Psychologies by : Carl Martin Allwood
Download or read book The Nature and Challenges of Indigenous Psychologies written by Carl Martin Allwood and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-23 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The indigenous psychologies (IPs) stress the importance of research being grounded in the conditions and culture of the researcher's own society due to the dominance of Western culture in mainstream psychology. The nature and challenges of the IPs are discussed from the perspectives of science studies and anthropology of knowledge (the study of human understanding in its social context). The Element describes general social conditions for the development of science and the IPs globally, and their development and form in some specific countries. Next, some more specific issues relating to the IPs are discussed. These issues include the nature of the IPs, scientific standards, type of culture concept favored, views on the philosophy of science, understanding of mainstream psychology, generalization of findings, and the IPs' isolation and independence. Finally, conclusions are drawn, for example with respect to the future of the IPs.

This book was released on 2020-04-21 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenges of Modernity offers a broad account of the social and economic history of Central and Eastern Europe in the twentieth century and asks critical questions about the structure and experience of modernity in different contexts and periods. This volume focuses on central questions such as: How did the various aspects of modernity manifest themselves in the region, and what were their limits? How was the multifaceted transition from a mainly agrarian to an industrial and post-industrial society experienced and perceived by historical subjects? Did Central and Eastern Europe in fact approximate its dream of modernity in the twentieth century despite all the reversals, detours and third-way visions? Structured chronologically and taking a comparative approach, a range of international contributors combine a focus on the overarching problems of the region with a discussion of individual countries and societies, offering the reader a comprehensive, nuanced survey of the social and economic history of this complex region in the recent past. The first in a four-volume set on Central and Eastern Europe in the twentieth century, it is the go-to resource for those interested in the ‘challenges of modernity‘ faced by this dynamic region.

Book Synopsis Interconnect-Centric Design for Advanced SOC and NOC by : Jari Nurmi
Download or read book Interconnect-Centric Design for Advanced SOC and NOC written by Jari Nurmi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-03-20 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Interconnect-centric Design for Advanced SoC and NoC, we have tried to create a comprehensive understanding about on-chip interconnect characteristics, design methodologies, layered views on different abstraction levels and finally about applying the interconnect-centric design in system-on-chip design. Traditionally, on-chip communication design has been done using rather ad-hoc and informal approaches that fail to meet some of the challenges posed by next-generation SOC designs, such as performance and throughput, power and energy, reliability, predictability, synchronization, and management of concurrency. To address these challenges, it is critical to take a global view of the communication problem, and decompose it along lines that make it more tractable. We believe that a layered approach similar to that defined by the communication networks community should also be used for on-chip communication design. The design issues are handled on physical and circuit layer, logic and architecture layer, and from system design methodology and tools point of view. Formal communication modeling and refinement is used to bridge the communication layers, and network-centric modeling of multiprocessor on-chip networks and socket-based design will serve the development of platforms for SoC and NoC integration. Interconnect-centric Design for Advanced SoC and NoC is concluded by two application examples: interconnect and memory organization in SoCs for advanced set-top boxes and TV, and a case study in NoC platform design for more generic applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origins of technocracy are shrouded in controversy, but most of its leaders were inspired by their association with the social critic Thorstein Veblen, between 1919 and 1921. Harold Loeb, an expatriate in Paris in the 1920s, was one of the more accomplished and interesting of the technocrats. In Life in a Technocracy, now a twentieth-century utopian classic, he expounds on the merits of creating a utopian society through technocracy, predicting the future of art, education, religion, and government under the leadership of technical professionals.
