This book was released on 2006 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The area of Alto Vale do Itajaí was one of the largest producers of milk in the State of Santa Catarina, having an average production of 2000 L/Cow/Year. The milk production in the State is improving, but the number of producers has been declining year after year due to the high cost production, mainly because of the productive system. The improvement of pastures comes as an alternative to reduce the costs tryingto keep the farmer in this activity. The production of seedlings in test tubes was idealized to maximize the process of the pastures improvement with the objective to increase the speed implantation and establishment of the vegetables in the pasture. The experiment was developed in a pasture of missioneira gigante (Axonopus catarinensis Valls), comparing the implantation of vegetables seedlings maku (Lotus uliginosus Schkuhr) and perennial peanut (Arachis pintoi Krapov & Gregory), produced in test tubes with the traditional form of implantation through seeds. The methods of improvement were appraised through the establishment of the seedlings and germination of the seeds in the field, survival percentage in the field, botanical composition of the pasture and implantation facilities to the farmers. The maku seedlings presented the highest percentage of establishment and survival in the field comparing with the other treatments, obtaining a result of 80,3 %, differing statistically of the treatment of ther maku seed. The results obtained in the evalutions of botanical composition using the methods of transecta and the square, the result were 3,7 % and 5,5 % respectively in the average of notes (the attributed notes varied from zero to 100 %), for the treatment of the maku seed road seedling being different statistically of the treatment of maku implemented through seeds. However, the method of the amostral frequency show us the results of the real situation about the experiment. In the development of the vegetables in the field, the maku through seedlings had the best development, in general with 17,3 cm of diameter, being statistically different from the other treatments. There were not statistical differences among the treatments with perennial peanut. According to the consulted farmers, the implantation methodology reduces the work improvement considerably, being the #sacho# an multifunctional implement and could be used in the horticultural activities inn the property. With this method, they are able to implant more than 3.000 seedlings a day. The costs with this practice, when the implantation labor is not considered, are smaller than the direct planting of vegetable parts. In a general way, the species maku had the tendency of being better in the evaluations in the field due to its growth habit and competition capacity with the grass of missioneira gigante. That happens mainly for thje fact of the the production of vegetables seedlings in the test tubes will have better results inn the costs reduction. There is a necessity to have more evaluations along the time, at least 3 years, and these results are from one year of implantation.

Book excerpt: First written by Marcel Mauss and Henri Humbert in 1902, A General Theory of Magic gained a wide new readership when republished by Mauss in 1950. As a study of magic in 'primitive' societies and its survival today in our thoughts and social actions, it represents what Claude Lévi-Strauss called, in an introduction to that edition, the astonishing modernity of the mind of one of the century's greatest thinkers. The book offers a fascinating snapshot of magic throughout various cultures as well as deep sociological and religious insights still very much relevant today. At a period when art, magic and science appear to be crossing paths once again, A General Theory of Magic presents itself as a classic for our times.

Book excerpt: In recent years, many members of the intellectual community have embraced a radical relativism regarding knowledge in general and scientific knowledge in particular, holding that Kuhn, Quine, and Feyerabend have knocked the traditional picture of scientific knowledge into a cocked hat. Is philosophy of science, or mistaken impressions of it, responsible for the rise of relativism? In this book, Laudan offers a trenchant, wide-ranging critique of cognitive relativism and a thorough introduction to major issues in the philosophy of knowledge.

Book excerpt: Phytomass and Primary Production of the Various Vegetational Zones and of the Entire Biosphere The biosphere is that thin layer at the earth's surface in which living organisms exist and biological cycling takes place. It includes the upper horizons of the soil in which plants root, the atmosphere near the ground, (insofar as organisms penetrate this space), and all the surface waters. More than 99% of the earth's biomass is phytomass, to which we shall limit our discussion. Amounts of phytomass are distinctly related to vegeta tional zones. Because accurate determination of phytomass and primary production is difficult, only gross estimates have been available until recently. However, in 1970, Bazilevich et al. published (in Russian) more accurate calculations, based on the rapidly accumulating literature, for the various thermal zones and bioclimatic regions of the earth. These authors calculated mean phyto mass and mean annual primary production for the various regions as dry mass (in tons) per hectare. On the basis of measurements of the areas covered by the individual regions, excluding rivers, lakes, glaciers, and permanent snow, total phytomass and total annual primary production for the various regions were obtained (see table). The sum of these figures is the phytomass and annual production of the land surface of the earth. In addition, the table gives corresponding data for the waters of the earth. The values involved are potential i. e. , they are based on natural vegetation uninfluenced by man.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nitrous oxide, N2O, is the third most important (in global warming terms) of the greenhouse gases, after carbon dioxide and methane. As this book describes, although it only comprises 320 parts per billion of the earth's atmosphere, it has a so-called Global Warming Potential nearly 300 times greater than that of carbon dioxide. N2O emissions are difficult to estimate, because they are predominantly biogenic in origin. The N2O is formed in soils and oceans throughout the world, by the microbial processes of nitrification and denitrification, that utilise the reactive N compounds ammonium and nitrate, respectively. These forms of nitrogen are released during the natural biogeochemical nitrogen cycle, but are also released by human activity. In fact, the quantity of these compounds entering the biosphere has virtually doubled since the beginning of the industrial age, and this increase has been matched by a corresponding increase in N2O emissions. The largest source is now agriculture, driven mainly by the use of synthetic nitrogen fertilisers. The other major diffuse source derives from release of NOx into the atmosphere from fossil fuel combustion and biomass burning, as well as ammonia from livestock manure. Some N2O also comes directly from combustion, and from two processes in the chemical industry: the production of nitric acid, and the production of adipic acid, used in nylon manufacture. Action is being taken to curb the industrial point-source emissions of N2O, but measures to limit or reduce agricultural emissions are inherently more difficult to devise. As we enter an era in which measures are being explored to reduce fossil fuel use and/or capture or sequester the CO2 emissions from the fuel, it is likely that the relative importance of N2O in the 'Kyoto basket' of greenhouse gases will increase, because comparable mitigation measures for N2O are inherently more difficult, and because expansion of the land area devoted to crops, to feed the increasing global population and to accommodate the current development of biofuels, is likely to lead to an increase in N fertiliser use, and thus N2O emission, worldwide. The aim of this book is to provide a synthesis of scientific information on the primary sources and sinks of nitrous oxide and an assessment of likely trends in atmospheric concentrations over the next century and the potential for mitigation measures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of my book "Climate and Circulation of the Tropics" was reasonably up to date to the middle of 1985. In a second printing in 1988 it was possible to complete a few literature references and to correct some misprints. However, vigorous research has taken place over the past five years in various areas of tropical climate dynamics, especially in the atmosphere-ocean mechanisms of climate anomalies, climate prediction, ocean circulation, and paleoclimates. Promising progress has also been made in the application of general circulation modelling to tropical climate problems. In the present second edition, named "Climate Dynamics of the Tropics", I have attempted to incorporate much of the recent work to late 1990. Chapters 8 and 9 have been essentially re-written, and major additions have been made to Chapters 4 and 12 in particular. I would like to acknowledge the continued support by the U.S. National Science Foundation over the past five years. B. Parthasarathy, Poona, and H. Lessmann, San Salvador, sent me updates of data series not easily accessible. I have benefitted from discussions with numerous colleagues in the United States and overseas. In the preparation of this second edition, Marilyn Wolff patiently transferred my illegible hand-written drafts onto word processor. Dierk Polzin and Dan Skemp assisted me with the creation of the page masters and the subject index and Christopher Collimore with the author index.
