Book Synopsis Altruistic Personality by : Samuel P. Oliner
Download or read book Altruistic Personality written by Samuel P. Oliner and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1992-04-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An enligtening and powerful exploration of those who risked their lives to help others during the Holocaust—and those who did not—and what we must do to ensure that such a tragedy never occurs again. Why, during the Holocaust, did some ordinary people risk their lives and the lives of their families to help others—even total strangers—while others stood passively by? Samuel Oliner, a Holocaust survivor who has interviewed more than seven hundred European rescuers and nonrescuers, provides some surprising answers in this compelling work. Samuel Oliver delves into the profound acts of altruism that emerged during one of history's darkest periods. Each interview provides a unique insight into the types of personalities that answer a call to action, and those that do not. By comparing these rescuers with bystanders, he provides a nuanced understanding of what drives people to act with extraordinary compassion—or to remain passive in the face of evil. Offering both a historical perspective and a roadmap for a more compassionate future, Altruistic Personality is not just a historical account—it is a call to action and a beacon for moral education. Relevant when it was first published and even more relevant today, Oliver argues that by understanding and fostering the traits of altruism, we can prevent future atrocities and bring out the better aspects of humanity.

Book Synopsis Unlocking Opportunity through Broadly Accessible Institutions by : Gloria Crisp
Download or read book Unlocking Opportunity through Broadly Accessible Institutions written by Gloria Crisp and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-29 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking resource highlights the unique mission and purpose of bachelor’s degree granting accessible institutions (BAIs), exploring the challenges and opportunities present within these institutions, and offering a counterpoint to the current dialogue that frames these institutions with a deficit-perspective. Featuring a broad range of esteemed and influential voices in the field of higher education, policy research, and administration, this unique collection argues that BAIs are an important but overlooked category of institutions in American post-secondary education, and demonstrates the critical role that BAIs play in the higher education landscape, distinct from traditional community colleges and elite universities. Chapters cover key issues such as educational policy, leadership opportunities, faculty, the role of geography, racial equity, and developmental education. Ultimately, this edited volume challenges damaging assumptions about the organizational nature, purpose, and role of BAIs in shaping educational opportunity for diverse student populations, and therefore contributes valuable scholarship to the ongoing dialogue and debate around achieving equity in higher education access in the United States.

Book Synopsis We Are Dancing for You by : Cutcha Risling Baldy
Download or read book We Are Dancing for You written by Cutcha Risling Baldy and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2018-06-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I am here. You will never be alone. We are dancing for you.” So begins Cutcha Risling Baldy’s deeply personal account of the revitalization of the women’s coming-of-age ceremony for the Hoopa Valley Tribe. At the end of the twentieth century, the tribe’s Flower Dance had not been fully practiced for decades. The women of the tribe, recognizing the critical importance of the tradition, undertook its revitalization using the memories of elders and medicine women and details found in museum archives, anthropological records, and oral histories. Deeply rooted in Indigenous knowledge, Risling Baldy brings us the voices of people transformed by cultural revitalization, including the accounts of young women who have participated in the Flower Dance. Using a framework of Native feminisms, she locates this revival within a broad context of decolonizing praxis and considers how this renaissance of women’s coming-of-age ceremonies confounds ethnographic depictions of Native women; challenges anthropological theories about menstruation, gender, and coming-of-age; and addresses gender inequality and gender violence within Native communities.
