Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digitalization and automation are leading to fundamental changes in the industrial landscape. In the German-speaking countries, this development is often summarized under the term Industry 4.0. Simultaneously, interaction technologies have made huge developments in the last decades. The use of mobile devices and touch screens is ubiquitous, augmented and virtual reality technologies have made their way into the market and new interaction concepts have become established. While new interaction technologies offer new possibilities for organizing or executing work in the context of Industry 4.0, the transformation of industrial processes also creates a need for new work practices. This book sheds light on the interplay of Industry 4.0 and new interaction technologies. It presents selected research articles on the topic of Human-Technology Interaction in the context of Industry 4.0. Researchers from various disciplines present the current state of research with regard to future interactions with production environments to develop a common vision of how to design future interactions in the industrial domain. In this context, various topics are covered: a detailed overview on assistive systems for supporting manual work is given, including technological and design aspects as well as implementation strategies. Industrial use-cases for extended reality (XR) technologies such as augmented and virtual reality (AR and VR) are presented, also covering aspects of how to author content in XR environments. The role of new work practices is examined, for example, by presenting concepts of gamification and human-machine teamwork for supporting well-being. Finally, topics of trust and technology acceptance are discussed in the context of Industry 4.0. Given this broad perspective, a vision is sketched of how to design future human-technology interactions in a way that realizes their full technical and human potential.

Book excerpt: In developed countries like the US, Germany and the UK it has been observed that workers who perform non-routine activities, either cognitive or manual, have benefited in terms of employment and income, while those performing routinary tasks have seen their job prospects and wages decline. This has led to a polarization of the labor markets and to a decrease in certain measures of inequality. This phenomenon has been attributed to task-biased technological change (TBTC), which differs from the skilled biased technological change in the fact that not only highly skilled workers have benefited from technology advancement. This book presents evidence of how digitalization and task-biased technological change are affecting the labor markets of different regions of the world and examines the factors that cause this inequality among nations. It examines recent issues around the effect of task-biased technological change on labor markets and the economy in general, with a comparison of different countries in Central and Eastern Europe, North America, and Latin America, as well as in other regions of the world. The incorporation of the abovementioned regions presents relevant particularities for the subject matter addressed in the book. The book also considers questions such as how labor market effects differ by gender and what the impact of digital skills on employment, inequalities and public policies might be. In so doing, it identifies the advances, opportunities, and changes that have taken place, while also making public policy proposals. The main market for the book is the global community of graduate students and researchers in the field of economics and, specifically, in the study of labor markets.

Book excerpt: This volume offers a cross-section of a good fifteen years of research in the sociology of technology and innovation at the Department of Sociology of Technology headed by Werner Rammert at the TU Berlin. All contributions in this volume were initiated or discussed there and thus bear in a certain sense a "Berlin signature" - not in the sense of a clearly delimited scientific school, but rather in the form of an open discussion group with different, but mutually related focal points. The Berlin Key, which gives it its title, imposes on all its users the program of action objectified in its mechanism: "User, if you want to take the key back to yourself after unlocking the door and go your way, you must lock the door again first. Unlike that Berlin key, the "Berlin Keys to the Sociology of Technology" presented here offer a set of keys to different but interconnected conceptual and methodological approaches in social science research on technology and innovation.

Marcel Siegler explores the dialectical relationship between human needs and desires, the demands and requirements of the built world, and the forms of organization that hold both humans and the built world together. He argues that complex societal constellations emerge from the actions individuals perform with the technological means at hand to satisfy their needs and desires in the short and long run. Based on a novel, complementary reading of French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, the study develops a conceptual framework for analyzing the intricate machinations of sociotechnical systems from a perspective on situated human-technology interaction.
