Book excerpt: Excerpt from Automotive Ignition Systems This volume has been prepared to satisfy the demand for a systematic course of study dealing with the ignition systems used on automobiles, trucks, tractors, and airplanes. In preparing the text the authors have had in mind the needs of the men who have to install, adjust, and repair ignition systems in the factory and repair shop, as well as the needs of the automobile owner who desires a better understanding of the principles and construction of the modern ignition system. A few systems have been included which are no longer manufactured but many of which are still to be found in operation. The authors wish to express their appreciation of the help and constructive criticism of Professor Ben G. Elliott; the help of Mr. Lawrence E. Blair in the preparation of many of the drawings; and the cooperation of many of the manufacturers of the equipment described. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ignition, Valve Timing and Automobile Electric Systems (Self-Starting and Lighting): A Comprehensive Manual of Self-Instruction on the Operation, Adjustment and Repair of Magnetos, Battery Ignition Systems, and Self-Starting Mechanisms Many of the troubles from which motorists have suffered in the' past - and still suffer, in fact, despite recent improvements in construction of all the essential parts of.the automobile - have arisen from failure of the ignition system to perform its proper function. While these troubles may perhaps be minimized in the latest model cars, there are still in daily use in the United States and Canada many thousands of machines built and equipped in the days of motor-car development, and to every owner and oper ator, no matter whether his car be new or old, the subject of ignition is of the utmost importance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Remy Ignition System on Aircraft Engines: Instruction Book In the case of a magneto of conventional type, the armature revolves in the field of a permanent magnet, carries primary and secondary windings, and serves as a combined generator and induction coil. Low voltage current is generated in the primary winding; high voltage current is induced in the secondary winding, when the primary circuit is broken by the opening of the contact breaker points. As the secondary winding is in connection with the plugs, via the distributor and leads, a spark passes each plug in order, since the voltage immediately attains a very high value and overcomes the resistance of the gap. The path of the mag netic flux, which threads the armature windings, changes instantly when the primary circuit is broken, the change of path enhancing the induced voltage in the doubly wound armature. The magnetic field is distorted by the rotation within it of windings carrying current, but the natural path of the magnetic flux is resumed when the current fails in the primary winding. This change of path causes a very rapid cutting of the multi-turn secondary winding by the lines of force. The high voltage induced in the secondary winding of a magneto is due to several factors, including. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ignition Devices for Motors By Mr. ARTHUR CROTCH, of the Engineer-in-Chief'a Department, G.P.O., London. Mr. Crotch, who it a silver medalist and honoursaman in Telegraphy, and honoursman in Telephony, City and Guilds of London Institute, in his Preface, says: - "To describe an installation of secondary cells a great deal more is required than merely to treat of the battery itself. Given the latter, the question of charging immediately arises. If a public supply of continuous current at a low voltage be available, the cells will be charged direct If the voltage be unsuitable, a dynamo will be necessary, and a motor may be interposed to drive it Hence the student is told something of both dynamo and motor. Again, if the public supply be alternating - single or polyphase - some elementary explanation of alternators, and induction motors, and of alternating currents generally, will be welcome. Having treated of continuous current transformers, the static transformer naturally falls within the purview. Hence I traverse, broadly and simply, the whole field of generators and motors, direct and alternating current, together with the accessories involved- voltmeters, ammeters, automatic cut-outs, etc., etc. As to the accumulators themselves, I deal in a simple manner with the principles involved, and describe the main types in use in the telegraph service, including practical details of the running of charging plant, the treatment and behaviour of the cells." Books from that period are often spoiled by imperfections that did not exist in the original. Imperfections could be in the form of blurred text, photographs, or missing pages. It is highly unlikely that this would occur with one of our books. Our extensive quality control ensures that the readers of Trieste Publishing's books will be delighted with their purchase. Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. This process ensures that the reader of one of Trieste Publishing's titles receives a volume that faithfully reproduces the original, and to the maximum degree possible, gives them the experience of owning the original work.We pride ourselves on not only creating a pathway to an extensive reservoir of books of the finest quality, but also providing value to every one of our readers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the dawn of the automotive age, designing a suitable ignition system for the spark-ignition engine represented as formulated by automotive pioneer Carl Benz the crux of all our problems. Among the exceptional talents focused on resolving the thorny issues of the day was that of Robert Bosch. The ultimate result was the Bosch high-voltage magneto. The company registered a patent on this epoch-making system on 7 January, 1902, in the same year that the first units were delivered to customers in the automotive industry. At the same time, Bosch embarked upon the development and manufacture of yet another vital ignition component, the spark plug, an event which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2002. This brochure from our automotive technology series starts with a thumbnail sketch tracing the evolution of ignition systems. It then proceeds to the design and operation of modern inductive ignition systems as installed in current passenger cars with spark-ignition engines. Two of this brochures central topics are the ignition coil and the spark plug, to which special sections have been devoted. These sections furnish detailed descriptions of the design, versions and operating concepts of various coil and plug models. Also included are descriptions of the particular demands imposed by direct gasoline injection and their implications for the selection of ignition components. The chapter on service technology offers insights into the methods employed to test ignition systems along with an overview of the test equipment used in service operations. Covers: -Historical retrospective-Design of inductive ignition systems-Ignition coils and spark plugs-Service technology
