Automotive control has slowly evolved from an add-on to classical engine and vehicle design to a key technology to enforce consumption, pollution and safety limits. Modeling, however, is still mainly based on classical methods, even though much progress has been done in the identification community to speed it up and improve it. This book, the product of a workshop of representatives of different communities, offers an insight on how to close the gap and exploit this progress for the next generations of vehicles.

Book excerpt: This Proceedings contains the papers presented at the 10th IFAC Symposium on Automation in Mining, Mineral and Metal Processing (MMM 2001), held in Tokyo, Japan, on 4-6 September 2001. This long-running symposium series has established a reputation for providing high-quality and authoritative surveys of the state of research in this economically and politically important application area. The latest conference lives up to this reputation, and this proceedings provides a truly international snapshot of quality research into several areas of mining, mineral and metal processing (MMM) technologies. Historically, research into MMM has set the direction for other areas of automation, and this excellent collection of papers, totalling over 70, is well placed to continue in this tradition.

Book excerpt: The safe and reliable operation of technical systems is of great significance for the protection of human life and health, the environment, and of the vested economic value. The correct functioning of those systems has a profound impact also on production cost and product quality. The early detection of faults is critical in avoiding performance degradation and damage to the machinery or human life. Accurate diagnosis then helps to make the right decisions on emergency actions and repairs. Fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) has developed into a major area of research, at the intersection of systems and control engineering, artificial intelligence, applied mathematics and statistics, and such application fields as chemical, electrical, mechanical and aerospace engineering. IFAC has recognized the significance of FDD by launching a triennial symposium series dedicated to the subject. The SAFEPROCESS Symposium is organized every three years since the first symposium held in Baden-Baden in 1991. SAFEPROCESS 2006, the 6th IFAC Symposium on Fault Detection, Supervision and Safety of Technical Processes was held in Beijing, PR China. The program included three plenary papers, two semi-plenary papers, two industrial talks by internationally recognized experts and 258 regular papers, which have been selected out of a total of 387 regular and invited papers submitted. * Discusses the developments and future challenges in all aspects of fault diagnosis and fault tolerant control * 8 invited and 36 contributed sessions included with a special session on the demonstration of process monitoring and diagnostic software tools

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the South African Council for Automation and Computation (SACAC) first submitted a bid to host the 8th IFAC Symposium on Automation in Mining, Mineral and Metal Processing in Beijing, many obstacles were evident. Most of these were embodied in negative international attitudes to the government of the Republic of South Africa and the apartheid society it supported. However, it is to the credit of the IFAC working group on automation in mining, mineral and metal processing that their application at that time was considered favourably, although not formally accepted. It took a visit to the 10th IFAC World Congress in Sydney and a visible shift in the political scenario to persuade the relevant IFAC committees that South Africa would be suitable for the symposium. A national organising committee was formed under the leadership of SACAC and the South African Institute of Measurement and Control (SAIMC), the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE) and the South African Institute for Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM). The combined team set about organising the first major IFAC international symposium in South Africa since 1976. The theme for the Symposium was based on the need to promote technology transfer and papers which addressed this issue were favoured. With over 50% of the authors from other countries, a significant opportunity for technology transfer into South Africa was created, which is in keeping with the overall theme.

Book excerpt: Industrial Prognostics predicts an industrial system’s lifespan using probability measurements to determine the way a machine operates. Prognostics are essential in determining being able to predict and stop failures before they occur. Therefore the development of dependable prognostic procedures for engineering systems is important to increase the system’s performance and reliability. Diagnostics and Prognostics of Engineering Systems: Methods and Techniques provides widespread coverage and discussions on the methods and techniques of diagnosis and prognosis systems. Including practical examples to display the method’s effectiveness in real-world applications as well as the latest trends and research, this reference source aims to introduce fundamental theory and practice for system diagnosis and prognosis.
