Book Synopsis The Use of Automatic Vehicle Location for Planning and Management Information by : Dan Levy
Download or read book The Use of Automatic Vehicle Location for Planning and Management Information written by Dan Levy and published by Canadian Urban Transit Association = Association canadienne du transport urbain. This book was released on 1991 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores the means through which automatic vehicle location (AVL) systems can be used to provide off-line data and reports for planning and management purposes. A review of the literature and discussions with transit system representatives determined that there are three distinct types of off- line activities that can benefit from the use of AVL data: planning and scheduling; line management information; and executive information. These three activities are found to generally use the same information, but require it to be presented in different formats and levels of aggregation. The system design guidelines are presented in the form of a checklist offering recommendations and suggestions to facilitate the use of AVL for planning and management information in transit properties designing or tendering new AVL systems. The guidelines cover organisational, systems, and reporting issues. The appendices contain a large selection of examples of reports generated using AVL, organised under the three types of information.

Download or read book Application of Automatic Vehicle Location in Law Enforcement written by G. R. Hansen and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A set of planning guidelines for the application of automatic vehicle location (AVL) to law enforcement is presented. Some essential characteristics and applications of AVL are outlined; systems in the operational or planning phases are discussed. Requirements analysis, systems concept design, implementation planning, and performances and cost modeling are described and demonstrated with numerous examples. A detailed description of a typical law enforcement AVL system, and a list of vendor sources are given in appendixes. This document is one of a series of five guideline manuals on mobile digital communications, computer-aided dispatch, automatic vehicle location, patrol force allocation, and multijurisdictional command and control systems for law enforcement applications.

Download or read book Computer-aided Scheduling and Dispatch in Demand-responsive Transit Services written by David S. Kessler and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2004 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scope of this synthesis is to (1) search out useful information on the use of computer-aided scheduling and dispatch (CASD) in demand-responsive transit (DRT) services, (2) develop an amalgamation or compendium of the current knowledge and successful practices used in computerizing the functions necessary to efficiently and effectively operate such DRT services, and (3) report on measures used to resolve specific problems in planning and implementing CASD. The ultimate objective in compiling a considerable storehouse of information is to make this information available to the public transit community. Private and nonprofit organizations that are providing DRT services will similarly benefit from a review of these results.

Book excerpt: Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a unique facility covering over 43 square miles. The Emergency Management and Response Office (EM & R) is required to respond, provide Incident Command (IC), and coordination for all Laboratory emergencies. This requires IC's and support staff to respond to the actual scene of the incident. Since the IC is under numerous constraints and stress, the office wanted the capability of locating the EM & R vehicles on an electronic map. An automated vehicle location (AVL) system was required for the additional safety of the emergency response personal. The requirements for the AVL system include total automatic tracking and low cost. After careful consideration, it was determined that the most efficient and cost effective system would be based on packet radio technology as the transmission media. The location is determined by the Department of Defense Global Positioning System (GPS). The system that was designed and constructed required four components to be interfaced and communicate with each other. The first component was a GPS receiver which actually provides the location information, equipped with a digital interface to communicate location information remotely. The second component is a modem that interfaces the GPS digital interface information to a radio. The third component is the radio itself which allows for the actual information transfer from the remote GPS receiver and modem. The fourth component is the software package that provides moving maps and displays the vehicle location on that map. The equipment was all commercial off-the-shelf that only required proper integration and packaging for the AVL application. This paper describes the steps taken in the integration of the equipment into the AVL package.

This book was released on 2002 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technological advances in computing, communications, and locating systems have been applied to a broad spectrum of the responsibilities shouldered by the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), including maintenance activities. However, even though one specific technology - Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) - has been thought to have significant benefit for maintenance operations, investing in the technology has been difficult to justify because the benefits are not easily quantifiable and little hard data exists related to the benefits of applying AVL to highway maintenance. This report describes the technologies associated with AVL, discusses a national survey of transportation agencies conducted as part of this work, and presents an analysis of the costs and benefits of implementing AVL for use in KDOT maintenance vehicles and striper trucks.
