The section on off-line systems describes a system, based on cooperative neural networks for the automatic processing of signatures on checks, for background removal as well as a model-based system that segments the signature into elements which are then processed locally and globally to evaluate the similarity between two specimens. The three papers on on-line systems compare three verification methods, based on statistical models of signature features using the same benchmark, describe a step-wise verification method based on the analysis of the signature components and describe the different design phases of an operational system, focusing on the various decisions that have to be made throughout the development of such a prototype.

The traditional approach for signature verification in the bank uses the human sense organ of eyes, and most of the time human judgment based on what is seen can be queried, especially in cases of impersonation, forgery, identity manipulation to name a few. Today the quest for fast money has driven a lot of frustrated people into various illegal acts and signature counterfeiting is one of the most common of this act. Banks and their customers occasionally fall victim because they lack adequate technology to verify signatures. Recently in most banks there are various cases of banking staff denying services to customers due to signature differences. This has resulted in a lot of misunderstandings, insults, quarrels, and even losses to most financial institutions. This work presents a digital signature verification system to enhance customer services in the banking industry, with the aim of improving the staff customer relationship within the Banking domain. This will be developed using image acquisition tool, image processing tools and machine learning. (Clustering technique). Signature has been globally accepted as a general means of official authentication, for legal documents, cheques, bank drafts, tellers, withdrawal slaps, deposit slops, receipts, and other official documents. This means has been widely accepted and implemented in all banking sectors due to its simplicity, confidentiality, and unique nature, also compared to other biometric verification systems, human signature is one of the few biological modalities that remain the same over time. This authentication means has been abused time and time again through impersonation (identical twins) and forgery, as a result has caused a lot of damage and losses to individuals and financial institutions. This research work addresses this challenge using artificial intelligent technique to present a novel signature verification system that helps authenticate business transactions in all financial institutions. The growing number of online transactions and contracts need stronger protection. Electronic signatures are undoubtedly a huge step forward in efficiency, but electronic signature counterfeiting is extremely real and worrying, especially as large become increasingly dependent on them, especially at a time when the globe is facing a pandemic. Traveling for the sake of conducting business has become a luxury since the world has come to a halt. Today electronic signature is very important in carrying out day-to-day business but at the same time, we need to be increasingly cautious and alert to prevent any e-signature fraud with carefully considered practices and procedures.

Book excerpt: Abstract : Feature extraction is an important process in automatic off-line signature verification systems. In this process, only the information that helps to identify the authenticity of questioned signatures is extracted and retained. Amongst the numerous feature extraction techniques investigated by researchers, grid segmentation schemes have been employed more favourably due to their encouraging results. The research presented in this dissertation focuses on improving the performance of Support Vector Machines (SVMs) based off-line signature verification systems using novel feature extraction techniques. The research began with an in-depth investigation and comparative performance analysis of the Modified Direction Feature (MDF), a structural feature extraction technique. Since the MDF is known for its relatively high accuracies in the cursive character recognition problem, it has been suggested that the performance of the MDF would be as encouraging in verifying Western (English) signatures due to the "cursive appearance" of the signatures. The other features employed for comparative studies were the two grid-based features proposed by Francesco Camastra and Wakabayashi et al. (Gradient feature). The former feature captures the information about the distribution of the foreground pixels in each grid cell whilst the latter utilises the directional information available. The comparisons of these state-of-the-art techniques set the foundation for the development of the novel feature extraction techniques proposed. In total, three novel local features and four global features were proposed and investigated. The local features include Gaussian Grid, Curvature Map, Variance and the local features are New Ratio, Energy, Trajectory Length, Moment. Amongst the local features proposed, the Gaussian Grid feature significantly outperformed all the state-of-the-art features mentioned above. Nevertheless, the combination of another particularly small-dimensional local feature, the Variance feature, with the global features also outperformed the MDF and the Camastra features, and closely approximates the performance of the Gradient feature. The total dimension of this feature set was only 33 compared to 120 of the MDF. This finding emphasizes the capability of small-dimensional global features.
