Book excerpt: Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) are being developed to provide more effective mine detection and neutralization at lower risk than conventional methods. To be effective, UUVs must be small and highly maneuverable, which limits their range and mission duration. An Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) can be used to overcome this limitation by carrying several mini-UUVs into an area of operations, eliminating the requirement to expend power to travel to the operational area. Bluefin Robotics Corp. and Brooke Ocean Technology Ltd. conducted a study to develop, evaluate, and select innovative concepts for automated launch and recovery systems that can deploy multiple UUVs from USVs. A concept architecture was also created for an Asset Control System that coordinates autonomous operations among the support ship, USV, UUVs and L & R system. This includes an Operator Tool Suite that serves as a top level operator interface.

Book excerpt: Research on collaboration among unmanned platforms is essential to improve the applications for autonomous missions, by expanding the working environment of the robotic systems, and reducing the risks and the costs associated with conducting manned operations. This research is devoted to enable the collaboration between an Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) and an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), by allowing the first one to launch and recover the second one. The objective of this dissertation is to identify possible methods to launch and recover a REMUS 100 AUV from a WAM-V 16 USV, thus developing this capability by designing and implementing a launch and recovery system (LARS). To meet this objective, a series of preliminary experiments was first performed to identify two distinct methods to launch and recover the AUV: mobile and semi-stationary. Both methods have been simulated using the Orcaflex software. Subsequently, the necessary control systems to create the mandatory USV autonomy for the purpose of launch and recovery were developed. Specifically, a series of low-level controllers were designed and implemented to enable two autonomous maneuvers on the USV: stationkeeping and speed & heading control. In addition, a level of intelligence to autonomously identify the optimal operating conditions within the vehicles’ working environment, was derived and integrated on the USV. Lastly, a LARS was designed and implemented on the vehicles to perform the operation following the proposed methodology. The LARS and all subsystems developed for this research were extensively tested through sea-trials. The methodology for launch and recovery, the design of the LARS and the experimental findings are reported in this document.

Book excerpt: Because of range limitations imposed by speed and power supplies, covert launch and recovery of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) near the operating area will be required for their use in many military applications. This thesis documents the implementation of precision control and planning facilities on the Phoenix AUV that will be required to support recovery in a small tube and provides a preliminary study of issues involved with AUV recovery by submarines. Implementation involves the development of low-level behaviors for sonar and vehicle control, mid-level tactics for recovery planning, and a mission planning system for translating high-level goals into an executable mission. Sonar behaviors consist of modes for locating and tracking objects, while vehicle control behaviors provide the ability to drive to and maintain a position relative to a tracked object. Finally, a mission-planning system allowing graphical specification of mission objectives and recovery parameters is implemented. Results of underwater virtual world and in-water testing show that precise AUV control based on sonar data and its use by higher-level tactics to plan and control recovery. Additionally, the mission-planning expert system has been shown to reduce mission planning time by approximately two thirds and results in missions with fewer logical and programming errors than manually generated missions.

Book excerpt: Autonomous vehicles (AVs) have been used in military operations for more than 60 years, with torpedoes, cruise missiles, satellites, and target drones being early examples.1 They have also been widely used in the civilian sector-for example, in the disposal of explosives, for work and measurement in radioactive environments, by various offshore industries for both creating and maintaining undersea facilities, for atmospheric and undersea research, and by industry in automated and robotic manufacturing. Recent military experiences with AVs have consistently demonstrated their value in a wide range of missions, and anticipated developments of AVs hold promise for increasingly significant roles in future naval operations. Advances in AV capabilities are enabled (and limited) by progress in the technologies of computing and robotics, navigation, communications and networking, power sources and propulsion, and materials. Autonomous Vehicles in Support of Naval Operations is a forward-looking discussion of the naval operational environment and vision for the Navy and Marine Corps and of naval mission needs and potential applications and limitations of AVs. This report considers the potential of AVs for naval operations, operational needs and technology issues, and opportunities for improved operations.

Book excerpt: Which military missions for unmanned undersea vehicles (UUVs) appear most promising to pursue in terms of military need, operational and technical risks, alternatives, and cost? To answer this question, the authors assess risks associated with using UUVs for advocated missions, identify non-UUV alternatives that may be more appropriate for such missions, and analyze potential costs associated with UUV development and use. They conclude that seven missions: mine countermeasures, deployment of leave-behind surveillance sensors or sensor arrays, near-land and harbor monitoring, oceanography, monitoring undersea infrastructure, anti-submarine warfare tracking, and inspection/identification - appear most promising. Among other recommendations, the authors suggest that the U.S. Navy consolidate its unmanned system master plans and establish relevant priorities in coordination with the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Increased emphasis on the use of surface platforms rather than submarines as host platforms is recommended.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The accomplishment of Launch and Recovery of Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs)at sea poses new and unique technology development challenges. USV, USV host ship, and USV/host ship interface equipment design are simultaneously evolving and require specialized interfaces. The approach taken to solve these challenges influences the design of both USV and host ship and creates a new category of equipment. The development of technology that addresses the most difficult of these challenges is subject to a wide band of design and development process considerations for the sake of compatibility with USV and host ship. Coupled with these challenges is the need for a high level of craft control and equipment reliability to mitigate risk of damage from at-sea docking. Autonomous Launch and Recovery systems under development should all meet the same general set of safety, reliability and performance criteria and minimize impact to both USV and host ship. This paper identifies some of the unique operational conditions that exist when trying to recover USVs and proposes a set of general Launch and Recovery considerations based upon current at-sea testing being performed by Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division(NSWC CD), Code 23. The goal of this paper will be to provide an Autonomous Launch and Recovery baseline and make recommendations for future USV Autonomous Launch and Recovery development. Lessons learned will influence future designers by providing a more balanced perspective about Autonomous USV Launch and Recovery technology development considerations. This paper is based on technology development work at Naval Surface Warfare Carderock Division, Code 23 funded by the ONR(Code 33)Unmanned Sea Surface Vehicle program.

The global market for AUVs is predicted to grow from 638 million dollars in 2020 to 1,638 million dollars by 2025 – a compound annual growth rate of 20.8 percent. To make AUVs suitable for a wider range of application-specific missions, it is necessary to deploy multiple AUVs to cooperatively perform the localization, tracking and formation tasks. However, weak underwater acoustic communication and the model uncertainty of AUVs make achieving this challenging. This book presents cutting-edge results regarding localization, tracking and formation for AUVs, highlighting the latest research on commonly encountered AUV systems. It also showcases several joint localization and tracking solutions for AUVs. Lastly, it discusses future research directions and provides guidance on the design of future localization, tracking and formation schemes for AUVs. Representing a substantial contribution to nonlinear system theory, robotic control theory, and underwater acoustic communication system, this book will appeal to university researchers, scientists, engineers, and graduate students in control theory and control engineering who wish to learn about the core principles, methods, algorithms, and applications of AUVs. Moreover, the practical localization, tracking and formation schemes presented provide guidance on exploring the ocean. The book is intended for those with an understanding of nonlinear system theory, robotic control theory, and underwater acoustic communication systems.

Book excerpt: The practical usage of unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) is limited by vehicle and operation cost, difficulty in accurate navigation, and communication between the vehicle and operator. The "Rex 2" UUV employs a system design where a submersible is connected to a float at the water's surface by means of a tether. By maintaining a surface expression, high-bandwidth radio communication to the operator becomes possible, and GPS may be used for accurate navigation. This arrangement allows the freedom of movement characteristic of untethered autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), while maintaining the live operator control and communication found with tethered remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). Expanding on the design and field experiences with the MIT AUV Lab's first Reef Explorer UUV, Rex 2 was designed to be inexpensive, easy to deploy, adaptable to various payloads, and simple to use. Rex 2 was designed, built, and operated in a number of ocean field tests, validating the utility of the vehicle and system concept.
