Book excerpt: A nearly vertical antenna wire varying in length from 3000 to 8000 ft was shock-excited by a high-voltage source. The resulting radiation fields were received at distances of about 600 km by two stations separated laterally so as to subtend an angle of about 15© at the source. The difference in wavefront arrival times at the two stations, observed for 101 transmissions, showed an average absolute deviation from the mean of about only 1/2 [mu]s. This figure includes the effects of possible source asymmetries, sferics noise, instrumental errors, and wave propagation. Typical oscillograms of antenna currents and radiation fields are given. It is shown that the amplitudes and durations of the pulse envelopes, the amplitudes and durations of the first half-cycles, and the quasi-frequencies of the pulses are in good agreement with a theory that takes energy losses into account.

Book excerpt: A method for online assembly-language debugging which greatly simplifies several of the bookkeeping tasks characteristically associated with that process has been developed and implemented in a program for the UNIVAC M-460 computer at Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories. With this program, an online user may insert or delete (in symbolic assembly language) any number of lines at any point in his previously assembled program in core, with the remainder of the program being relocated appropriately.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The propagation of electromagnetic waves in a horizontally stratified layer of gyrotropic medium is discussed. Derivation of a comprehensive representation for magneto-ionic coupling coefficients allows interpretation of the physical significance of the coupling. Introduction of an invariant quantity for an inhomogeneous medium becomes an important guide for numerical solutions of the wave equation. Numerical results of magneto-ionic coupling coefficients are presented. Based on region properties, characteristic wave types are defined: for the isotropic region, linearly polarized waves are used; for the anisotropic region, elliptically polarized waves generally are applied. Book excerpt: In this work, rigorous electromagnetic theory is used to determine the nose-on radar cross section of a perfectly conducting cone of finite height. The end cap of the cone is assumed to be a segment of a s spherical surface with center at the apex of the cone. Numerical results have been obtained for a cone having a total apex angle of 30 degrees and for values of [kappa alpha] ranging from 0.0259 to 5.18, where [kappa]=2 [pi]/[lambda] and [alpha] is the radius of the base of the cone. Siegel's Rayleigh method and by using Keller's modified geometrical optics as well as with experimental results obtained by Keys. The comparisons are instructive below [kappa alpha] = 3.2, the apparent upper limit of validity of the present results -- p.[3].

Book excerpt: A system of fixed-rotating vectors can be used to study the impedance loci of functions of the first Foster form and of systems including negative impedance converters. Of particular interest in the field of dielectrics and biological membrane studies is a parallel RC network, where the dielectric of the capacitor is given by the Debye dispersion relations. Such a network also falls into the category of the first Foster form.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of diverse recognition procedures that have been proposed for parsing sentences with respect to a context-free grammar are described in this paper by means of a common device. Each procedure is defined by giving an algorithm for obtaining a nondeterministic Turing Machine recognizer that is equivalent to a given context-free grammar. The formalization of the Turing Machine has been chosen to make possible particularly simple descriptions of the parsing procedures considered.

Book excerpt: The results of an experimental study of zone refining of the binary system triphenyl antimony-biphenyl are presented. The isotope Sb124, which is a strong gamma emitter, was employed as a tracer; this allowed a rapid in situ nondestructive analysis, closely spaced experimental points, and the opportunity to study distribution as a function of varying experimental conditions. With the aid of computers (IBM 7090 and IBM 7044) apparent (distribution coefficients) were calculated and the experimental data compared with those predicted from various mathematical models. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of Bellman's dynamic programming technique to realistic control problems has generally been precluded by excessive storage requirements inherent in the method. In this paper, the notion of state mobility is described and shown to be valuable in reducing certain classes of dynamic programming calculations to manageable size. The scheme requires one simple calculation at each stage of the process. IN many cases even this calculation may be omitted. It results in the reduction of the range of allowable state variables to be scanned. The amount of reduction varies from problem to problem. A simple example exhibits a fifty percent reduction. This corresponds to a fifty percent reduction in storage requirements for the problem. Reductions of one or two orders of magnitude appear possible for certain classes of problems.

Book excerpt: Wave cataloguing suitable for ray tracing of a pulsed wave packet in a weakly-dissipative, horizontallystratified magnetoionic medium is described, Particular attention is devoted to the cataloguing of the various characteristic waves so that the influence of the local ionization density and collision frequency can be understood. The procedure presented is applicable under general incident conditions and complex refractive index surfaces. The Booker quartic equation is used to derive the unambiguous wave normals and wave identification is obtained from the dispersion equation. A modified CMA. diagram including collisions is illustrated. (Author).
