Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autobiography of Thomas Jefferson, 1743-1790, Together With a Summary of the Chief Events in Jefferson's Life Declaration of Independence is given in full, and is probably the chief authority on the matter. In the later constitutional discussions, Jefferson placed himself with the group which contended that representation in Congress should be based upon population or on voters. He saw no reason why people should, by calling themselves a state, secure as large a representative power in the Govern ment as belonged to people. The jealousy and apprehensions Of the smaller states, such as Rhode Island and Delaware, that the Government might be entirely controlled by states like Pennsyl vania, Virginia, and New York proved, as we know, sufficient to secure an equal state representation in the Upper House of Congress. It was supposed that the evil of this disproportioned representation would at least be restricted to the original group Of states; but in comparatively recent history, we have seen a still greater inequity in the authority given to Nevada with inhabitants to control through its two senators, a decision of the Senate and through the Senate of the whole Government, in regard to a financial policy to which the great states of the country were Opposed. Jefferson was, in 1787, appointed U. S. Minister to Paris, and the latter portion of the Diary is taken up chiefly with his account of the beginnings Of the French Revolution and his analysis of the causes and events. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autobiography of Thomas Jefferson, 1743-1790, Together With a Summary of the Chief Events in Jefferson's Life The Autobiography left by Thomas Jefferson belongs to the literature of the Nation. The import ant part played by the great Virginian in the organization of the Republic and in the leadership of affairs during the first three or four Administrations, the distinctive character of the man, his imagination, his intellectual force, and his patriotism, have served to make Thomas Jefferson a great figure in American history. Even his fiercest opponents in his own generation and of later years, those who believed that his theories would prove detrimental to the interests of the State, have been ready to admit that he had honestly at heart the welfare of his fellow-citizens and of mankind, and to admit further that he must take rank among the great Americans. The peculiar value that is possessed by a narrative in autobiographical form does not rest on the probability that the statement of facts or the record of facts and the motives which influence action would be presented more accurately than in a narrative by another hand. It may easily be the case that the memory of a writer as to the events of his earlier life will not prove as trustworthy as records left by his contemporaries. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in 1821, just five years before his death, Thomas Jefferson's Autobiography tells the story of the third president's childhood, political career and retirement. The third of ten children, Jefferson spent most of his childhood on his family farm with his father, a planter and surveyor. After his father's death in 1757, Jefferson inherited the famous Monticello, which he would take over at the age of 21. Serving in the Continental Congress at the start of the American Revolution, Jefferson soon moved to represent Virginia as wartime Governor in 1779. Just after the war ended, he served as a diplomat, stationed in Paris, and became the U.S. Minister to France in 1785. In 1790, he served as the first Secretary of State for President George Washington and was elected as Vice President to John Adams in 1796. Jefferson's autobiography touches on his rivalry with President Adams and his secret publishing of the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions with James Madison. Following his election as the third U.S. President in 1801, Jefferson saw the purchase of the Louisiana Territory, the expedition of Louis and Clark, and legislation that banned the importation of slaves to the United States. After his retirement from politics, Jefferson lived a quiet life in Monticello, frequently hosting guests of high political status who valued his opinions and ideas.

Book Synopsis Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings by : Annette Gordon-Reed
Download or read book Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings written by Annette Gordon-Reed and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 1998-03-29 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Annette Gordon-Reed's groundbreaking study was first published, rumors of Thomas Jefferson's sexual involvement with his slave Sally Hemings had circulated for two centuries. Among all aspects of Jefferson's renowned life, it was perhaps the most hotly contested topic. The publication of Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings intensified this debate by identifying glaring inconsistencies in many noted scholars' evaluations of the existing evidence. In this study, Gordon-Reed assembles a fascinating and convincing argument: not that the alleged thirty-eight-year liaison necessarily took place but rather that the evidence for its taking place has been denied a fair hearing. Friends of Jefferson sought to debunk the Hemings story as early as 1800, and most subsequent historians and biographers followed suit, finding the affair unthinkable based upon their view of Jefferson's life, character, and beliefs. Gordon-Reed responds to these critics by pointing out numerous errors and prejudices in their writings, ranging from inaccurate citations, to impossible time lines, to virtual exclusions of evidence—especially evidence concerning the Hemings family. She demonstrates how these scholars may have been misguided by their own biases and may even have tailored evidence to serve and preserve their opinions of Jefferson. This updated edition of the book also includes an afterword in which the author comments on the DNA study that provided further evidence of a Jefferson and Hemings liaison. Possessing both a layperson's unfettered curiosity and a lawyer's logical mind, Annette Gordon-Reed writes with a style and compassion that are irresistible. Each chapter revolves around a key figure in the Hemings drama, and the resulting portraits are engrossing and very personal. Gordon-Reed also brings a keen intuitive sense of the psychological complexities of human relationships—relationships that, in the real world, often develop regardless of status or race. The most compelling element of all, however, is her extensive and careful research, which often allows the evidence to speak for itself. Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings: An American Controversy is the definitive look at a centuries-old question that should fascinate general readers and historians alike.
Book Synopsis American Jesus by : Stephen Prothero
Download or read book American Jesus written by Stephen Prothero and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2004-09-18 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Deep Dive into America's Complex Relationship with Jesus There's no denying America's rich religious background–belief is woven into daily life. But as Stephen Prothero argues in American Jesus, many of the most interesting appraisals of Jesus have emerged outside the churches: in music, film, and popular culture; and among Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, and people of no religion at all. Delve into this compelling chronicle as it explores how Jesus, the carpenter from Nazareth, has been refashioned into distinctly American identities over the centuries. From his enlistment as a beacon of hope for abolitionists to his appropriation as a figurehead for Klansmen, the image of Jesus has been as mercurial as it is influential. In this diverse and conflicted scene, American Jesus stands as a testament to the peculiar fusion of the temporal and divine in contemporary America. Equal parts enlightening and entertaining, American Jesus goes beyond being simply a work of history. It’s an intricate mirror, reflecting the American spirit while questioning the nation's socio-cultural fabric.

Book Synopsis Thomas Jefferson's Qur'an by : Denise Spellberg
Download or read book Thomas Jefferson's Qur'an written by Denise Spellberg and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this original and illuminating book, Denise A. Spellberg reveals a little-known but crucial dimension of the story of American religious freedom—a drama in which Islam played a surprising role. In 1765, eleven years before composing the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson bought a Qur’an. This marked only the beginning of his lifelong interest in Islam, and he would go on to acquire numerous books on Middle Eastern languages, history, and travel, taking extensive notes on Islam as it relates to English common law. Jefferson sought to understand Islam notwithstanding his personal disdain for the faith, a sentiment prevalent among his Protestant contemporaries in England and America. But unlike most of them, by 1776 Jefferson could imagine Muslims as future citizens of his new country. Based on groundbreaking research, Spellberg compellingly recounts how a handful of the Founders, Jefferson foremost among them, drew upon Enlightenment ideas about the toleration of Muslims (then deemed the ultimate outsiders in Western society) to fashion out of what had been a purely speculative debate a practical foundation for governance in America. In this way, Muslims, who were not even known to exist in the colonies, became the imaginary outer limit for an unprecedented, uniquely American religious pluralism that would also encompass the actual despised minorities of Jews and Catholics. The rancorous public dispute concerning the inclusion of Muslims, for which principle Jefferson’s political foes would vilify him to the end of his life, thus became decisive in the Founders’ ultimate judgment not to establish a Protestant nation, as they might well have done. As popular suspicions about Islam persist and the numbers of American Muslim citizenry grow into the millions, Spellberg’s revelatory understanding of this radical notion of the Founders is more urgent than ever. Thomas Jefferson’s Qur’an is a timely look at the ideals that existed at our country’s creation, and their fundamental implications for our present and future.
