Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autobiographical Recollections, Vol. 2 of 2 Morse and I find ourselves very comfortable in our new lodgings, and I hope we shall not change again very soon. Our landlady has a very pretty daughter, which is one very great recommendation to her lodgings. By the bye, we shall not now be able to hear of King's arrival very soon. If he delivers the letter I gave him to mother, I hope you will all show him a good deal of attention, as he was a very great friend to me here. I am sure you will like him, for he is very agreeable, has read a good deal, and, from the opportunities I have had of judging, I think he has an excellent heart as well as head. He will be able to give you a good account of me, of the manner in which I live, &c. There is one quality that I found in King which pleased me much, because it is a scarce one, he does not flatter. This tourist from the New World had crossed the Atlantic in a yacht, and, entering Europe by the Mediterranean, had landed at Barcelona, where he made the acquaintance of Her Britannic Majesty's Consul, James Hannay, who gave him the letter of introduction that made him a welcome guest at 43, Springfield Road. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Happy Life, Vol. 2 of 2: Being the Autobiography of Marianne North It became quite dark, and the paintings were blown all about the garden in every direction. There was a grand scramble to gather them together, and to get everything safely inside the house before the rain came, which soon followed in torrents. I went on to Amritsar, where the hotel was not bad. At breakfast one of the officers told me he had been there some months, and never yet had had the curiosity to see the Golden\ Temple! I went at once, having picked up a garry-driver at the station, who talked some English. It was a real gem, half white marble lace-work, and half gilt copper, with rich dark hangings and carpets, built out in the middle of a clear lake, smooth as glass, in which every line was accurately reflected a long causeway of marble leading to it was always crowded with finely-dressed people. The lake was surrounded by trees and picturesque buildings. The holy book of the Sikhs was kept in the temple, and no shoes were admitted all round the sacred tank. I set to work at once on a sketch, and no one interfered with me the first day, but on the second they said, No orders give chair, and would not let me sit, even on my own, anywhere. However, I had done most of my work, and did not care. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autobiography, Vol. 2 of 2: Memories and Experiences of Moncure Daniel Conway Discussions in London concerning slavery and the negro - My "Testimonies concerning Slavery" - A disclosure about the Confederacy - Commemoration of John Brown - Thackeray - George Cruikshank - Charles Dickens - My journalistic work - The Shakespeare tercentenary at Stratford-on-Avon - Howard Staunton - Mrs. Shakespeare's second marriage - Illness and death of our child Emerson - Excursion on the Continent - A visit to Dr. Strauss Gervinus - A week at Ostend - Residence at Notting Hill - Professor Cairnes - J.S. Mill - Helen Taylor. The paradoxical ideas of Carlyle on slavery, impressive by reason of his absolute veracity and remoteness from the partizan arena, were quoted by men not free from partizanship. One Sunday evening I was taken by Tom Hughes to a room where the elder Macmillan received his friends. Conversation began on the American situation, and some participant spoke to me sharply. Thereupon Hughes broke out on my assailant with a severity from which the company could not recover. Herbert Spencer said to me in a low voice, "A good many intelligent people do not hold the same views of the negro and his position as those of the abolitionists." I was invited to join the newly formed Anthropological Society, and did so, but found that it was led by a few ingenious gentlemen whose chief interest was to foster contempt of the negro. One of these, Dr. James Hunt, published a pamphlet entitled "The Negro's Place in Nature." Huxley pointed out to me privately the fallacies of Hunt, and I made speeches in the Anthropological Society, but it became plain to me that antislavery sentiment in England was by no means so deep as I had supposed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences, Vol. 1 of 2 I feel sure that I shall not disappoint my readers when I make the preliminary announcement that these two volumes do not profess to be anything in the nature of an autobiography. One reason why I have not attempted an autobiography is that my life, in its own course, has been uneventful, and that I have no story to tell about it which could have any claim on public interest. Another reason is that it has been one of the happiest fortunes of my life to meet With a great many distinguished men and women about whom readers in general would be glad to hear anything that can be said in addition to what they know or have learned already. These volumes, therefore, are strictly reminiscences, recollections of the eminent persons with whom I have been brought into association, and not a record of my own other wise unimportant doings. I have not even arranged these volumes With any careful attention to strict chronological order. Naturally they group them selves to some extent with regard to the general sequence of my opportunities, but my main idea has. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections I was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in the year 1841, on a lovely Sunday morning, June thirteenth, so you see I was destined never to become a great person, for it was under the sign of Gemini, and the twins are so jealous (castor and Pollox) the moment the one sees one of their own rising the other pulls him down, so one born in Gemini never or almost never reaches to great heights; but greatness does not always make for happiness, and most of the Gemini children are happy, - indeed persons born under this sign of the zodiac have a great many fine traits; altogether I have always loved being born in June, the month of long days full of sunshine, the loveliest flowers, the trees coming into full leaf, the birds nesting, and the whole earth showing the res urrection of life and immortality of the soul. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambling Recollections, Vol. 1 of 2 Unfortunately, what are called my declining years have not been overcrowded with enjoyment; but among my pleasanter recollections are those of Americans like Consuelo, Duchess of Manchester; her sister. Lady Lister Kaye; Mrs. Adair, and Lady Randolph Churchill. These friends being still alive let us hope for many years to come I venture neither to eulogise nor to criticise. I have also much to say of gratitude to the family of the late Duke and Duchess of Marlborough, to Lord and Lady Londonderry, to Lady Chesterfield, and to Mr. and Mrs. George Bankes and their family, from all of whom I have received many acts of kindness. I may say the same of the late Duke of Wellington a man of extraordinary common sense and irresistible humour. If it were my misfortune to write any sequel to this book, I should have much to say that space has now forced me to omit. I feel under great obligations to Sir Edward Grey and to other members of the Foreign Office for the facilities they have given me in connection with this work. My warm thanks are also due to the Russian Ambassador and to the Persian charge d'affaires. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Digby Grand, Vol. 2 of 2: An Autobiography But much as all these eloquent gentlemen love to dwell upon their favourite topics, they are not to be compared with two old University chums, meeting after an interval of a few years, and living over again in memory the wild jollities and rapid escapades of manhood's morning tim& At it they go - pell-mell - both together, without a moment's interval or ces sation: how Brazenose bumped Oriel, and what the dean said concerning the desecration of Peckwater what a 'good-plucked one' was Muffies of Trinity, and how he licked the bargeman, and rode over Tom Sebright - why Sapling should have been senior-wrangler, and how Muggins took a 'double first' - and what fun we had after 'hall' in 'my rooms, ' and amongst 'our own set of men.' All these recollections appear to revive with a freshness that Time is altogether unable to tarnish, and the admiring auditor who has not enjoyed the advantages of a University education, begins to think that his own youth has been most ingloriously wasted.
