Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Auto-movement, i.e. the non-consciously controlled movements of the body, comprise a large part of the techniques used in magic: the pendulum, the divining rod, automatic writing, glossolalia (speaking in languages one has not learned), and several forms of telekinesis. Auto-movement also occurs in inconspicuous places such as drawing the "right" tarot card - which, after all, is not consciously controlled. There are also some forms of auto-movement, where the movement has not been decided by the one who moves, as in sleepwalking, hypnosis, stigmata, possession, etc. ... and in advertising, which also leads people to do something that they have not decided themselves. There are also some collective forms of auto-movement such as the crop circles. Auto-movement is primarily a "monitor" for the subconscious mind. Since telepathy is an ability of the subconscious mind, auto-movement can also be used for telepathic perception. Correspondingly, auto-movement is also helpful in the use of telekinesis, which is an ability of the subconscious to act. All in all, a closer look at the various forms of automatic, non-consciously controlled movements, as in scrying, results in a much better understanding of the psyche and a more effective approach to magic, as well as some new techniques, such as "sending out one's own body", in which one's own body can perform tasks that would not be possible in normal consciousness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This challenging book, with excellent contributions from international social scientists, focuses on the link between body and memory that specifically refers to the use of digital technologies. Neuroscientists know very well that human beings automatically and unconsciously organize their experience in their bodies into spatial units whose confines are established by changes in location, temporality and the interactive elements that determine it. Our memories might be less reliable than those of the average computer, but they are just as capacious, much more flexible, and even more user-friendly. The aim of the present book is to outline, by the body, what we know of the sociology of memory. The authors and editors believe that an analysis at the sociological level will prove valuable in throwing light on accounts of human behavior at the interpersonal and social level, and will play an important role in our capacity to understand the neurobiological factors that underpin the various types of memory. This book is an ideal resource for advanced and postgraduate students in social sciences, as well as practitioners in the field of Information and Communication technologies. Scholarly and accessible in tone, Learning from Memory: Body, Memory and Technology in a Globalizing World will be read and enjoyed by members of the general public and the professional audience alike.

Since then the area has developed dramatically, many researchers joining enthusiastically and research groups sprouting everywhere. This frenetic activity led to the emergence of several strands that are now established ?elds in themselves. We are now reaching a stage that one may describe as maturer: with more rigour, more benchmarks, more results, more stringent acceptance criteria, more applications, in brief, more sound science. This, which is the n- ural path of all new areas, comes at a price, however. A certain enthusiasm, a certain adventurousness from the early years is fading and may have been lost on the way. The ?eld has become more reasonable. To counterbalance this and to encourage lively discussions, a conceptual track, where papers were judged on criteria like importance and/or novelty of the concepts proposed rather than the experimental/theoretical results, has been introduced this year. A conference on a theme as broad as Arti?cial Life is bound to be very - verse, but a few tendencies emerged. First, ?elds like ‘Robotics and Autonomous Agents’ or ‘Evolutionary Computation’ are still extremely active and keep on bringing a wealth of results to the A-Life community. Even there, however, new tendencies appear, like collective robotics, and more speci?cally self-assembling robotics, which represent now a large subsection. Second, new areas appear.

Book excerpt: This edited volume presents research results of the PPP European Green Vehicle Initiative (EGVI), focusing on electric vehicle batteries. Electrification is one road towards sustainable road transportation, and battery technology is one of the key enabling technologies. However, at the same time, battery technology is one of the main obstacles for a broad commercial launch of electric vehicles. This book includes research contributions which try to bridge the gap between research and innovation in the field of battery technology for electric vehicles. The target audience primarily comprises researchers and experts in the field.

Book excerpt: Sensory processing difficulties can lead to puzzling, hard-to-treat emotional and behavioral challenges in children and adolescents. For example, children who can't filter normal background sounds may seem anxious, those oversensitive to touch may seem phobic, and those who seek sensory input may appear hyperactive. Filled with case vignettes, this highly informative guide helps mental health clinicians recognize and address sensory dysregulation that may co-occur with or be misdiagnosed as anxiety disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and other psychological or behavioral problems. In rich detail, the authors illustrate how to modify cognitive-behavioral therapy and other evidence-based interventions to meet this population's unique needs and make treatment more effective. Reproducible clinical tools can be downloaded and printed in a convenient 8 1/2" x 11" size.
