This book was released on 2012-05-23 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Schilling & Schwartz 2004: 427).

Focusing mainly on the problems experienced by high functioning people with autism - and those working with and caring for them - the book offers practical ways of dealing with their difficulties. Each chapter makes use of clinical case material to illustrate the kinds of problems faced and ways in which they may be overcome. First-hand accounts from people with autism are included and links with psychiatric illness in later life are explored. This updated edition is helpful to both professionals and families with autistic children and has been completely updated to take account of the latest research in the field. It also includes an additional chapter on the differences between autism and Asperger syndrome.

Book excerpt: This pioneering work sets forth an integrative model for understanding the development of psychopathology. What makes a person vulnerable to mental illness in general? To specific clinical syndromes? Why are some individuals highly prone to emotional distress? Seeking a deeper understanding of these compelling questions, the volume highlights the central role of affect regulation--or the failure to develop functional strategies for regulating affect--in a wide range of disorders. An extensive body of psychological and neurobiological knowledge is synthesized to illuminate the processes by which this key capacity may be undermined in the developing child. Bridging the gap between biological and psychodynamic perspectives on psychopathology, the book has important implications for research, prevention, and treatment.

The authors provide descriptions of select elementary statistical methods that are traditionally used to analyze biomarker data with a focus on the proper application of each method, including necessary assumptions, software recommendations, and proper interpretation of computer output. In addition, the book discusses frequently encountered challenges in analyzing biomarker data and how to deal with them, methods for the quality assessment of biomarkers, and biomarker study designs. Covering a broad range of statistical methods that have been used to analyze biomarker data in published research studies, Analysis of Biomarker Data: A Practical Guide also features: A greater emphasis on the application of methods as opposed to the underlying statistical and mathematical theory The use of SAS®, R, and other software throughout to illustrate the presented calculations for each example Numerous exercises based on real-world data as well as solutions to the problems to aid in reader comprehension The principles of good research study design and the methods for assessing the quality of a newly proposed biomarker A companion website that includes a software appendix with multiple types of software and complete data sets from the book’s examples Analysis of Biomarker Data: A Practical Guide is an ideal upper-undergraduate and graduate-level textbook for courses in the biological or environmental sciences. An excellent reference for statisticians who routinely analyze and interpret biomarker data, the book is also useful for researchers who wish to perform their own analyses of biomarker data, such as toxicologists, pharmacologists, epidemiologists, environmental and clinical laboratory scientists, and other professionals in the health and environmental sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early emotional development, emotional regulation, and the links between emotion and social or cognitive functioning in atypically developing children have not received much attention. This lack is due in part to the priorities given to the educational and therapeutic needs of these children. Yet an understanding of the basic emotional processes in children with atypical development can only serve to promote more effective strategies for teaching and intervening in the lives of these children and their families and may contribute to our understanding of basic emotional processes as well. When referring to "emotions," the editors mean some complex set of processes or abilities, whether or not the topic is normal or atypical development. Specifically, they use the term "emotion" to refer to at least three things -- emotional expressions, emotional states, and emotional experiences. The focus of this volume, these three aspects of emotional life are affected by socialization practices, maturational change, and individual biological differences including, in this case, differences in children as a function of disability. Contributors examine the development of emotions in children with organic or psychological disorders as well as those in compromised social contexts making this volume of prime importance to developmental, clinical, and social psychologists, educators, and child mental health experts.
