Book excerpt: Visual histories in 19th and 20th century Austria are documented here, from court photography and nature photography to political photography. A single photo studio will be analyzed documenting lives in Western Austria as well as a photo archive and its special collections regarding mountains. Imperial Austria is present in the pictures of court photographer Ludwig Angerer. Photos of wars figure heavily in this volume, from the brutal fighting in the Dolomites during WWI to National Socialism, concentration camps and the air war during WW II. Postwar life and the American presence in Austria will be documented from the end of the war to the postwar occupation - seen through the lenses of U.S. star photographer Yoichi Okamoto. Cartoons will be analyzed and the role of exhibits in modern public diplomacy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is art photography? First of all sorry for my english, I am persian !! I have to say this is really a question that is not so easy to answer There are examples of photos that have been made completely without claiming to be art and that are traded as such, Pictures, of which not even the photographer is known. It is very important that the photographer for himself has an idea of Art Photos, and even if he goes with his camera out, hoping for a good photo, but he has a frame operation for his work When I come home with many photos, begins the work, which means I ask myself: Is this an art photo and fit my working frame Operation What are my personal works frames Operation Details, people movement, creativity, conscious action, willing to take random image The question I ask myself is: Could it be that viewers would regret it if they had not seen this or it would not matter to them if they regret it, then the image belongs to my book. It is also since the beginning of the art always a bone of contention what art is. The Answers have unlimited space for interpretations. I think also in terms of art are photos like music and painting! Some like it and others do not! As with the music! What varied and exciting makes the whole thing so well! And always looking for something to watch again! Perhaps art is to produce the conscious application of creative imagination and craft skills to aesthetic objects such as picture or sculpture. 'Conscious' means that a Random product is not art 'Creative' means a copy is not art. 'Craft' means the arts and crafts are complementary. 'Aesthetic' means that the product is beautiful. This definition is probably not for everyone but for me creates clarity Copy a photo, painting or sculpture, is not as copies of writings possible (except, someone wants to copy a Tolstoy book!!) When I write a sentence and millions of other people agree with this statement, for example this sentence: A copy of the hare, (a watercolor by Albrecht Durer) is nice, but only the original is Art This sentence is not a copy, but an image or music or photo can not be copied because it is a person and creativity behind it, From nothing, now by the artist something exists, whether a picture or song or photo. Creativity is really a key word. I remember when I was in Prague and Budapest and wanted pictures of craftsmanship (Glass and wooden toys) make that were behind glass cabinets, first automatically and instinctively you would think on this issue to a polarizing filter, as this reflection on nonmetallic surfaces (so can also suppress on glass). Avoid for reflections on glass panes But I asked myself, why actually with polarizing filter? What's bad about that once viewer sees how a picture would look without polarizing filter? Not only see objects, but also passers-by on the street and the photographer himself, but all in a photo!! And i did it I made these photos without polarizing filter and I believe have become beautiful photos. An artistic work has been deliberately created"

Book excerpt: Where does Austrian photography stand, and where is it going? The exhibition 'Photos. Points of view in Austrian Photography from the 1930s until today' in the 21er Haus in Vienna attempts to answer such questions. The focus is not so much on the actors, but rather their motifs, via which impartially and associatively access to the art discourse is gained. The selection of works is based on historical to contemporary still-life photography, images of people, snapshots of small gestures, which open up the interpersonal and the characteristic, and pictures dealing with photography itself. Both exhibition and catalog avoid any hierarchical or chronological classifications. The image pages of the catalog are bound in random order, giving each catalog an exclusive character. 0Exhibition: 21er Haus, Vienna, Austria (30.1.-5.5.2013).

Book excerpt: Exploring one of the most popular destinations in Europe, this photographic guide illustrates Austria’s diverse scenery from Bregenz to the Viennese Forest and from the Salzkammergut to Styria. Snowcapped mountains interspersed with wooden hillsides and serene lakes are depicted, stretching as far as the plateau of the Burgenland. The country’s beautiful ski resorts and expansive lakes are captured, creating an impressive network of Alpine hiking routes that promise relaxation. Showcasing the legacy of churches and monasteries that master builders have bequeathed to Austria, this travel companion highlights structures from the Romanesque to the baroque, rivaled by almost none other. Magnificent buildings such as Melk Monastery and an array of splendid castles mirror the country’s turbulent history. The country’s many customs are explored, illustrating an intricate part of Austrian culture with many variations on the traditional national costume and a whole calendar of merry festivities. Major attractions which draw numerous visitors each year are listed, including the Festspiele in Mozart’s native Salzburg. Investigating the Danube metropolis of Vienna with its palaces and art collections at the border between eastern and western Europe, this handbook spotlights the city where Sigmund Freud once analyzed and where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Johannes Brahms once celebrated their great musical triumphs.

Book excerpt: Photographs of peasants, churchgoers, skiers, and alpine landscapes in magazines, books, and exhibitions informed the visual culture of Austria in the 1930s. Used by the authoritarian Ständestaat to glorify traditional values and establish a backward-looking Austrian identity, the same pictures of pristine mountain idylls, picturesque work in the fields, and local costume groups also served to massively propagate Austria as a tourist destination. Aesthetically demanding and partly influenced by the New Vision movement, the Heimat photographs of the main protagonists—Rudolf Koppitz, Peter Paul Atzwanger, Simon Moser, Stefan Kruckenhauser, Adalbert Defner, and Wilhelm Angerer—were, irrespective of political discontinuities, widely disseminated well into postwar Austria.
