Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia's greatest escape stories from two world wars Australia’s Greatest Escapes is a collection of stories about the most hazardous aspect of the prisoner of war experience – escape. Here is all the adventure, suspense and courage of ordinary Australians who defied their captors; men who tunnelled to freedom, crawled through stinking drains, or clawed a passage beneath barbed wire in a desperate attempt to flee captivity. They were willing to risk the odds and even death in the loneliest war of all – the fight to be free. Each possessed in spades the noble qualities of boldness, resourcefulness, cunning, determination and mateship we have come to admire about our Australian service men and women under adversity. Featuring stories of Australian POWs from all theatres of war, including one who fled a German work camp during World War I, another involved in a mass tunnel escape from a notorious Italian camp, and an airman who brazenly attempted to steal a German fighter and fly it back to England. We also re-live the tragic saga of the Sandakan death marches in which six Australian escapers became the only survivors from 2000 POWs, and follow the perilous journeys to freedom undertaken by Australian infantrymen following the appalling massacre of their fellow soldiers on the Japanese-held island of Ambon.

Book Synopsis Dilemmas in Public Management in Greater China and Australia by : Andrew Podger
Download or read book Dilemmas in Public Management in Greater China and Australia written by Andrew Podger and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2023-07-12 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws on more than a decade of workshops organised by the Greater China Australia Dialogue on Public Administration, involving scholars and practitioners from Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Australia. Although these workshops recognised the major differences in the institutional frameworks of these jurisdictions, until recently they focused largely on the shared challenges and the diffusion of ideas and approaches. As rising international tensions inevitably draw attention to areas where interests and philosophies diverge, it is the differences that must now be highlighted. Yet, despite the tensions, this book reveals that these jurisdictions continue to address shared challenges in public administration. The book’s contributors focus in detail on these four areas: 1. intergovernmental relations, including the shifting balance between centralisation and decentralisation 2. budgeting and financial management, including during and after the COVID-19 pandemic 3. the civil service, its capability, and its relationship with government and the public 4. service delivery, particularly in health and aged care. This book is aimed at a wide readership, not only at those within the jurisdictions it explores. It emphasises the importance of continued engagement in understanding different approaches to public administration—confirming fundamental philosophical differences where necessary but also looking for common ground and opportunities for shared learning.

Book Synopsis Australia's Greatest Inventions by : Lynda De Lacey
Download or read book Australia's Greatest Inventions written by Lynda De Lacey and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2010-07-30 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia's Greatest Inventions; From boomerangs to the Hills Hoist by Lynda de Lacey Australia has a reputation for innovation and inventiveness - that famous 'tie it up with fence-wire' attitude towards getting things done is one of our best-known national characteristics. Popular opinion tells us that a knack for adaptation - for jerry rigging and so-called 'bush improvisation' - is one of the qualities that marks us out as Australian. If you had to play 'spot the Australian' among other nationalities, you'd choose the ones with the duct tape and pliers in their hands. But ask your average Aussie to reel off a list of uniquely Australian inventions at a pub trivia night, and most won't get much further than the stump-jump plough, the Hills Hoist, Speedos and the pavlova. Suddenly you may find yourself wondering if we're all that inventive as a culture after all? These examples certainly don't seem to build a terribly convincing case. This book proves that for a 200-year-old culture with a relatively small population, Australians have a much richer inventive history than we give ourselves credit for. Once we've seen that this reputation for inventiveness is justified, the next question becomes; is there something in our cultural wiring, something about being Australian, that makes us more inventive than other people?
