Information is presented about the number of clients, country or origins, course enrollments, module enrollments and outcomes, sex, state/territory, age, and annual hours. One figure shows overseas vocational education students compared to all overseas students, 1990-97. Nine tables illustrate the following: average annual hours by state or territory 1996 and 1997; overseas clients, course enrollments, and annual hours by country, 1996 and 1997; overseas module enrollments by module outcome by state or territory, 1997; percent of overseas enrollments by stream of study, by state or territory, 1997; overseas course and module enrollments, annual hours, and clients, by state or territory, 1997; percent of overseas enrollments by field of study by state or territory, 1997; percent of overseas enrollments by qualification level, by state or territory, 1997; overseas clients by sex and state or territory, 1996 and 1997; and overseas clients by age and state or territory, 1997. Some narrative accompanies each figure and table. A central foldout section has two sections: (1) the world in summary--top 10 source countries of overseas students studying in Australia in VET institutes that receive some public funds and (2) Australia in summary--overseas students studying in VET in Australia. Book excerpt: These two documents consist of a statistical compilation and a summary of Australian young people (aged 14-24 years) who were enrolled in vocational education and training (VET) in 1997. In 1997, 18.6% of Australian young people were enrolled in VET, approximately the same percentage as in 1996. Young people accounted for slightly more than one-third of all clients of publicly funded VET programs and almost 85% of all apprentices and trainees in 1997. Because the proportion of young people in the Australian population has been declining steadily, the number of young people in VET declined from approximately 497,600 clients (36.7% of all clients) in 1996 to 497,200 (34.1%) in 1997. Of those 497,200 young people, half were teenagers. Approximately 65% (321,500) of young people undertaking publicly funded VET in 1997 were located in New South Wales or Victoria. In 1997, males accounted for 57% of young people studying VET (versus 52% in 1996). Four courses accounted for nearly 50% of all courses undertaken by young people in 1997: nonaward courses (13.6%); certificate III (12.6%); statement of attainment (11.3%); and certificate II (11.1%). In 1997, young people had a module completion rate of 66.7% and a module fail rate of 6.2% (the national averages were 64.9% and 4.9%, respectively). (MN)

Book excerpt: This report discusses vocational education and training (VET) and distance for Australian VET students. The following are some of the findings for commuting students, as reported in a detailed national data collection on where Australian VET students live and where they take their training: (1) the median distance between a student's place of residence and place of training is estimated at 11.6 kilometers, although distances vary widely; (2) a majority (68 percent) of students undertook their training within 20 kilometers from their residence, although 9 percent of the students lived more than 100 kilometers from their training and 2 percent lived more than 500 kilometers distant; (3) students who traveled longer distances usually took fewer hours of course work; (4) males traveled further than females, but age does not seem to be related to commuter behavior; and (5) commuter distance patterns vary according to the field of study. Findings on correspondence students are as follows: (1) about 6 percent of students learned by correspondence, with about a quarter of them also taking noncorrespondence courses; (2) students from the rural and remote areas of Australia, in particular, took advantage of correspondence study; and (3) correspondence students were more likely to be female, have some form of prior education, and be older than noncorrespondence students. In addition, about 7 percent of Australian postsecondary graduates left home in order to live where the course of their choice was offered. (KC)

Book excerpt: Rethinking a Sustainable Society Alan Mayne The world has already passed the midway point for achieving by 2015 the eight Millennium Development Goals for a “more peaceful, prosperous and just world” that were set by the United Nations in the wake of its inspirational Millennium Dec- 1 laration in 2000. These goals range from combating poverty, hunger, and disease, to empowering women, and ensuring environmental sustainability. However Ban Ki-Moon, the United Nations Secretary-General, conceded in 2007 that progress to date has been mixed. During 2008 the head of the United Nations World Food P- gramme cautioned that because of the surge in world commodity prices the program had insuf?cient money to stave off global malnutrition, and the World Health Or- nization warned of a global crisis in water and sanitation. Depressing news accounts accumulate about opportunities missed to achieve a fairer world order and ecolo- calsustainability:themanipulationofelectionresultsinAfrica, humanrightsabuses in China, 4000 Americans dead and another nation torn apart by a senseless and protracted war in Iraq, and weasel words by the world’s political leadership in the lead-up to negotiations for a climate change deal in 2009 that is supposed to stabilize global carbon dioxide emissions. It is clear that the parameters of the debates that drive progressive policy change urgently require repositioning and energizing. As is shown by the contributors to Rethinking work and learning, experts in the humanities and social sciences (HASS) couldhaveanimportantroletoplayinthisprocess.

Book excerpt: The number of school students undertaking vocational education and training (VET) in Australia's publicly funded VET sector has grown rapidly in the last 5 years. It is estimated that in 1998, at least 80,000 secondary school students were also studying within Australia's publicly funded VET sector. The vast majority (88%) of these students are aged 15-19 years or about 1 in 10 of 15- to 19-year-old school students in Australia. Other estimates are that 40,400, or 37.3 percent, of VET students at secondary schools in 1998 were enrolled in the initial vocational operatives stream of study, courses that provide initial education and training at a level below that of a tradesperson. For VET students who still attended school in 1998, the major field of study was services, hospitality, and transportation followed by business, administration, economics, engineering, and surveying. For VET students not at secondary school in 1998, the major field of study was business, administration, and economics, followed by VET multifield education, engineering, and surveying. Forty-eight percent of VET students still at school are enrolled in Australian Qualification Framework level I or II courses. The proportion of module enrollments successfully completed in 1997 by students still attending school is 64.8%--close to the rate for all VET students (63.0%). In 1998, 336,900 qualifications in the publicly funded VET sector have been reported as being issued, 15,700 of them to students still attending secondary school. (YLB)

Book excerpt: This publication presents detailed information from the responses of over 63,000 Technical and Further Education (TAFE) graduates and 4,100 TAFE module completers (non-graduates of the TAFE program) to a survey about the types of students who undertook training during 1998. Section 1 compares key results for graduates and module completers. It presents in narrative and figures these results: percent of graduates by key outcome measures for 1995, 1997, 1998, and 1999; employment or further study of graduates; employment outcomes; movement to higher skilled occupations; satisfaction outcomes; main reason for doing the training; reasons for not continuing to study (module completers only); and student profile. Section 2 lists information that the survey collected. Section 3 presents the survey findings in two parts. Part 1, on graduates, provides information on employment outcomes, satisfaction outcomes, further study, course of study, and student characteristics. Part 2, on module completers, provides information on employment outcomes, satisfaction outcomes, reasons for not continuing to study, training undertaken, and student characteristics. Sections 1-3 contain 36 figures. Section 4 consists of 59 tables that present graduate and module completer data. Section 5 contains frequency counts for all survey questions and additional data items, such as responses per institute. Appendixes include explanatory notes, glossary, brochure, cover letter, and questionnaires. (YLB)
