Book Synopsis Research in Geographical Education by : Peter Wilson

Book excerpt: This publication contains 19 papers presented at the inaugural meeting of the Australian Geographical Education Research Association held in Brisbane, December 1980. The papers surveyed a wide and diverse range of research. The introductory group of papers present several new views on curriculum development, course content, and teaching methods for geography teachers. The affective domain was highlighted by several speakers, which reflected the importance of attitudes and values in current research and teaching in geography. An example of a technique called "Values Probing" which provides an integrated and comprehensive approach to teaching values issues in geography is presented. Five papers relate to mapping geography. Two papers reflect a concern for the teaching effectiveness of geography textbooks. Teachers were the focus of research by two speakers. The conceptual structure of geography has received considerable attention in recent years. One paper describes the technique of quanitative content analysis which he has used to survey the conceptual structure of the discipline. Another paper investigates the use of one of the fundamental concepts of geography--the regional concept--with primary school children. The final two papers survey the nature of research in geographical education. (Author/RM)

Book Synopsis Social Geography in International Perspective by : John Eyles
Download or read book Social Geography in International Perspective written by John Eyles and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1986 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social geography has been one of the great growth areas in geography in recent decades. It has brought within geographical analysis a wide range of new subject matter that has proved extremely invigorating for the discipline, such as ethnic segregation, crime and environment, differences in residential housing and public service provision, and inner city problems. At the same time the growth of social geography has heightened geographers' awareness of social questions and given rise to the so-called "welfare approach" whereby geographers express their social conscience and call for greater social justice in the spatial distribution of social services. The social geography movement however has not been evenly spread throughout the worldódifferent parts of the world vary in the emphasis they give to topics. This book surveys the current international situation of the social geography school. It discusses the contemporary trends, the leading figures, issues of concern, and differences of approach that are now to be found in social geography around the world.

Book Synopsis Geography and National Identity by : David Hooson
Download or read book Geography and National Identity written by David Hooson and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1994-10-20 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of especially commissioned essays explores the geography of, and the role of geography in, national and proto-national identity. Place and national identity are bound together. Attachment to the one is almost always inseparable from the sense of the other. Yet, as this volume shows, the articulated self-conscious linking of place and identity is by and large a modern phenomenon that took root in nineteenth-century Europe. The formation of supranational states and the much vaunted globalization of culture led many to believe there would be a progressive dilution of national identities and a growing agglomeration of places and nations into larger state units. Precisely the reverse has taken place. This book explores the connections between identity and homeland, showing how a place may be perceived as archetypal, endowed with love and celebrated in music and poetry, yet be a pretext for violence and war. It examines the evolution of ideas about identity and their manifestations in a wide variety of settings, from the former Soviet Union to the island states of the South Pacific.
Book Synopsis Australian Contributions to Strategic and Military Geography by : Stuart Pearson
Download or read book Australian Contributions to Strategic and Military Geography written by Stuart Pearson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing from military geography’s spatial roots, its embrace of dynamic systems, and integration of human and biophysical environments, this book helps in understanding the value of analyzing patterns, processes and systems, and cross-scale and multi-disciplinary ways of acting in a complex world, while making the case for a resurgence of strategic and military geography in Australia. Here, leading experts demonstrate that geography retains its relevance in clarifying the scale and dynamics of defense activities in assessments of the international, regional, national, and site impacts of changes in physical, cyber and human geographies. The cases presented show Australia contributing to a growing strategic and military geography.
