Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1961 the 22-year-old Mike Brown joined the New Zealand artist, Ross Crothall, in an old terrace house in inner Sydney's Annandale. Over the following two years the artists filled the house with a remarkable body of work. Launched with an equally extraordinary exhibition, the movement they called Imitation Realism introduced collage, assemblage and installation to Australian art for the first time. Laying the groundwork for a distinctive Australian postmodernism, Imitation Realism was also the first Australian art movement to respond in a profound way to Aboriginal art, and to the tribal art of New Guinea and the Pacific region. By the mid-1960s Brown was already the most controversial figure in Australian art. In 1963 a key work was thrown out of a major travelling exhibition for being overtly sexual; a year later he publicly attacked Sydney artists and critics for having failed the test of integrity. Finally, in 1966-67, Brown became the only Australian artist to have been successfully prosecuted for obscenity. Brown spent the last 28 years of his life in Melbourne, where his reputation for radicalism and nonconformity was cemented with his multiplicity of styles, exploration of themes of sexuality, and transgressive commitment to the ideal of street art and graffiti. Against a background of the counter-culture and the social and political upheavals of the 1960s and 1970s, Brown's art and remarkable life of personal and creative struggle is without parallel in Australian art.

Book excerpt: "This souvenir book reflects something of this unique blend of the wide range of artistic endeavour that is Australian art. Needless to say, it is not possible to attempt to represent all artists, periods and styles in this book. An emphasis has therefore been placed on those paintings and sculptures on permanent display, although in order to illustrate some aspects of the history and development of Australian art, and the great variety and depth of the collection, works in other media have also been included." -introduction.

Book excerpt: This broad-sweeping survey of the National Gallery's paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, and decorative arts and design collections features more than 400 works. Indigenous and non-Indigenous works are represented, with iconic favourites such as Sidney Nolan's 'Ned Kelly' series set alongside important but lesser-known acquisitions. The works are arranged in chronological order, from 1770 to 2002--'Pre-colonial and Colonial' through to 'Art Now'. Insightful essays from over 50 artists, curators and scholars, range from personal reflections by artists discussing their own works to more discursive or critical commentaries placing works in their historical context.

Book excerpt: A bruised ridge of hills. A scrub-mottled plain. Ghost gums framing a wash of sky ... Pioneering Aboriginal watercolourist Albert Namatjira¿s landscape paintings are synonymous with our perception of the Australian outback. But these luminous landscapes also expressed Namatjira¿s deep connection with the Western Arrarnta Country for which he was a traditional custodian. This is the first publication of Namatjira¿s work since the copyright was returned to his descendants, and celebrates the legacy of this important artist through a selection of his evocative watercolours from the NGA¿s world-renowned collection.

Book excerpt: Bringing together works by 30 contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists from across the country, Defying Empire commemorates the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Referendum that recognized Aboriginal people as Australians for the first time. It explores the strength and resilience of Australia's Indigenous people since first contact, through the historical fight for recognition and ongoing activism in the present day. This moving and powerful art touches on the issues of identity, racism, displacement, country, nuclear testing, sovereignty and the stolen generations through many media: painting on canvas and bark, weaving and sculpture, new media, prints, photography, metalwork and glasswork. 'We defy: By existing; By determining our identity; By asserting our histories; our culture; our language; By telling our stories, our way; By being one of the oldest continuous living cultures in the world.' - Tina Baum, NGA Curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art
