Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of New Zealand, Vol. 1 At one time it was hoped that several persons of great ability and high character, who had amassed much recorded information and had lived long in New Zealand, would combine the results and give them to the world. But that hope has vanished. I learned from one of them, who went to New Zealand in 1839, and lives there now, that on the occasion of a visit to Europe he abandoned the idea of publication, and destroyed his manuscripts. The failure of that project, and encouragement from those concerned in it, embolden me to present the following narrative compiled with a diligent endeavour to test every statement by reference to the most authentic sources of information. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Australasia, Vol. 1: Australia and New Zealand All place names beginning with Mac or M' have been spelt in full as Mac, beginning the second syllable with a small letter. This system has been adopted after reference to Dr. J. Scott Keltie, with whose approval I feel safe. It is often now impossible to determine how the stockman who first surveyed a country from Mac 's Look-out, or first watered his flock at Mac 's Water-hole, preferred to spell his name. When we find two brothers spelling their name, one Macallister and the other m'allister, geographers may be excused for adopting a uniform spelling of this prefix. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered why New Zealand's plants and animals are so different from those in other countries? Why kakapo is the only parrot in the world that cannot fly, or why the kiwi lives here and nowhere else? New Zealand is an extraordinary place, unique on earth, and the remarkable story of how and why life evolved here is the subject of Ghosts of Gondwana. The challenge of explaining New Zealand's natural origins is picked up in this fully revised edition of the popular award-winning book. It presents the latest scientific research in highly readable form, highlighting studies that reveal the deep historical background of our landscapes, fauna and flora - from ancient frogs and moa to delicate insects and the magnificent southern beech forests. It introduces the latest discoveries and resolves past issues like the 'Oligocene drowning' hypothesis. Exciting fossil discoveries are revealed and new scientific technologies and approaches to the discipline of historical biogeography are discussed - approaches that range from undersea geology to molecular clocks - and it inevitably draws attention to the debates and conflicts that distinguish different schools of opinion in this holistic branch of theoretical science. This revision incorporates the results of 10 years of intensive scientific research and includes four entirely new chapters to: focus on 'yesterday's maps' to draw attention to the ephemeral islands in our history that have possibly acted as stepping stones for terrestrial animals and plants but today have sunk into the sea; incorporate the author's own special interest in an ancient group of 'jaw-moths', unknown and unnoticed by most people but with a strong message that New Zealand is part of the world when it comes to explaining where our fauna have come from; present recent research findings on our huge flightless birds, the ratites; and include New Zealand's terrestrial molluscs into the story. Ghosts of Gondwana identifies New Zealand as one of the most challenging places on earth to explain, but it's readable, engaging style and revised illustrations render this often-controversial discipline of science into a format that is accessible to any reader with an interest in natural history and the unique environment of New Zealand.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Zealand and Its Colonization, Vol. 1 Missionary but the pioneer of the destruction of its heathen people? Is a problem still waiting its solution in New Zealand. On what principle, with reference to native rights, have these Islands been erected into a British Colony? And what are the obligations contracted by the Crown of England in subjecting them to British rule? To what extent have the native race adopted the habits and usages of civilized life? And what pro gress has been made by them in industrial pur suits? What is the prospect of their permanent preservation? And what means have been taken for saving them from that process of exter mination under which uncivilized tribes have too commonly disappeared when brought into contact with civilized men? To these, and questions such as these, the following pages will be found to contain a faithful answer. Contemporary events, however, are seldom rightly discerned or fully appreciated, even' by their principal actors; but when the subject shall have become a matter of History, the Colonization of these Islands and the commingling of the Races will be read with all the interest of romance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travel Letters From New Zealand, Australia and Africa Saturday, january 4, 1913. - This is written in the Pacific ocean, on the ship Sonoma, two days out of Sydney, Australia, where we expect to land next Mon day. We have been on the ship seventeen days, and the passengers and servants seem as familiar as people with whom we have associated many years. In the main, we have had a pleasant voyage, although the weather was somewhat boisterous the first few days out of San Francisco. We stopped eight hours at Honolulu, and five hours at Pago Pago, in the Samoa Islands. There was an elaborate celebration on board on Christ mas day, which included a big dinner, speeches, and a dance, and we also had a similar New Year celebration, although we actually had no New Year's day. At a late hour on the 3lst of December we crossed the l80th meridian, and, when we awoke the following morning, the date was January 2, 1913. Ships sailing westward drop a day on crossing the 180th meridian, and ships going eastward add a day. In traveling toward the sun, the day increases in length, and, in a trip around the world, this increase amounts to exactly twenty four hours. Every day we set our watches back from twenty to thirty minutes, and when we reach Canton. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
