Jeder von uns kennt diesbezüglich Geschichten aus früheren Zeiten. Selbst meine Großeltern lernten noch den Rohrstock in der Schule kennen und wussten auch von anderen Kindern, die zu ihrer Zeit von den Eltern mit einem Riemen gepeinigt wurden. Gehorsam war zu jener Zeit noch eines der Erziehungsziele und dieses wurde oftmals mit Züchtigung erreicht. In der heutigen Zeit stehen andere Erziehungsziele an erster Stelle und auch dem Kind an sich wird eine andere Bedeutung beigemessen. Ihm werden Rechte zugesprochen. Trotzdem erreichen uns immer wieder entsetzliche Bilder und Nachrichten von Kindern, die (fast) verhungert sind, die tagelang allein in der elterlichen Wohnung verharren mussten, die Narben von Peitschen, Zigaretten und anderen Gegenständen offenbaren, sowie Hämatome am ganzen Körper besitzen. Ich habe nie verstanden, wie manche Eltern ihren Kindern solch schreckliche Dinge antun können. Noch unverständlicher ist es mir, seitdem ich selbst Mutter bin und jeden Tag mit einem wunderbaren Lachen seitens meiner kleinen Tochter begrüßt werde. Sicherlich ist es nicht immer leicht, doch das rechtfertigt keine Misshandlung, egal in welcher Form. Mein eigentliches Ziel dieser Arbeit war es Antworten und Erklärungen zu bekommen, warum Eltern ihre Kinder schlagen. Doch schon bei der Sichtung erster Bücher erschrak ich über das eigentliche Ausmaß an körperlichen Misshandlungstaten. Nie hätte ich gedacht, was Babys und Kinder alles erleiden müssen, auf was für furchtbare Ideen manche Eltern kommen. Ich möchte zwar immer noch Antworten, doch mein jetziges Ziel ist es einen Überblick über die Arten der Kindesmisshandlung zu geben und vor allem die körperlichen Formen mit ihrer Symptomatik und den Folgen für die Kinder genau darzustellen, um auch andere Menschen, die nicht davon betroffen sind oder waren, darauf aufmerksam zu machen. Ich werde außerdem die rechtliche Verankerung aufweisen, um zu verdeutlichen, welche Rechte ein Kind in Deutschland hat und ausgewählte Hilfsmaßnahmen für diese Kinder bei Rechtsverletzung erläutern. Durch diesen breiten Überblick hoffe ich, dass Außenstehenden die Augen geöffnet werden können, dass sich mal eine Person mehr bei Verdacht auf Kindesmisshandlung getraut etwas dagegen zu unternehmen und dass durch geeignete Präventivmaßnahmen, welche ich auch vorstellen werde, anderen Kindern schon [...]

Through the application of Gottfredson and Hirschi’s general theory of crime and Shaw and McKay’s social disorganization theory, the authors of this Brief examine the importance of family socialization and school and neighborhood for self-control of youth in three Russian cities, replicating results from an earlier study in Germany. The cases presented in the Brief found that family socialization is important for self-control, but it interacts with school and neighbourhood contexts. According to the study, school social control as a structural characteristic can lead to less delinquency, even if students did not develop self-control. Self-control mediates parental supervision and attachment to parents on one hand, and juvenile delinquency on the other hand. However it was not found to mediate neighbourhood context characteristics. The results of the study provide a research framework that can be applied to other international, comparative contexts. It will be of interest to researchers in Criminology and Criminal Justice, particularly Developmental and Life-Course Criminology, as well as related fields such as Public Policy and Social Work.

A wide range of mental disorders are considered in the book, each portrayed by a distinguished clinician. Each chapter begins with the description of a paradigmatic case study in order to introduce the reader directly to the patient’s lived world. The first-person perspective of the patient is the principal focus of attention. The essential, defining features of each psychopathological phenomenon and the meaning that the patient attaches to it are carefully analyzed in order to “make sense” of the patient’s apparently nonsensical experiences. In the second part of each chapter, the case study is discussed within the context of relevant literature and a detailed picture of the state of the art concerning the psychopathological understanding of the phenomenon at issue is provided. An Experiential Approach to Psychopathology, and the method it proposes, may be considered the result of convergence of classic phenomenological psychopathological concepts and updated clinical insights into patients’ lived experiences. It endorses three key principles: subjective phenomena are the quintessential feature of mental disorders; their qualitative study is mandatory; phenomenology has developed a rigorous method to grasp “what it is like” to be a person experiencing psychopathological phenomena. While the book is highly relevant for expert clinical phenomenologists, it is written in a way that will be readily understandable for trainees and young clinicians.
