These poems represents some of my tears which I couldn't cry, some of my smiles which were accompanied with loved ones, some gratitudes, some untold thoughts and fluctuating emotions in different situations and after meeting unlike people. Zephyr is my first effort to convert my emotions and thoughts into a book. I hope readers will connect themselves to my words and will be amused by the hues of life which I have tried to portray through my words.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We slipped into this country like thieves, onto the land that once was ours. With these words, spoken by an illegal Mexican day laborer, The Madonnas of Echo Park takes us into the unseen world of Los Angeles, following the men and women who cook the meals, clean the homes, and struggle to lose their ethnic identity in the pursuit of the American dream. When a dozen or so girls and mothers gather on an Echo Park street corner to act out a scene from a Madonna music video, they find themselves caught in the crossfire of a drive-by shooting. In the aftermath, Aurora Esperanza grows distant from her mother, Felicia, who as a housekeeper in the Hollywood Hills establishes a unique relationship with a detached housewife. The Esperanzas’ shifting lives connect with those of various members of their neighborhood. A day laborer trolls the streets for work with men half his age and witnesses a murder that pits his morality against his illegal status; a religious hypocrite gets her comeuppance when she meets the Virgin Mary at a bus stop on Sunset Boulevard; a typical bus route turns violent when cultures and egos collide in the night, with devastating results; and Aurora goes on a journey through her gentrified childhood neighborhood in a quest to discover her own history and her place in the land that all Mexican Americans dream of, "the land that belongs to us again." Like the Academy Award–winning film Crash, The Madonnas of Echo Park follows the intersections of its characters and cultures in Los Angeles. In the footsteps of Junot Díaz and Sherman Alexie, Brando Skyhorse in his debut novel gives voice to one neighborhood in Los Angeles with an astonishing— and unforgettable—lyrical power.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this project, sociologists Jonathan R. Wynn and Berkeley Franz and political scientist Daniel Skinner set out to examine why so many communities surrounding hospitals are economically distressed and medically underserved. On the one hand, hospitals anchor the communities that surround themoften staying in their communities for decades. Hospitals craft strategies to engage with the surrounding community, many of them focused on buying and hiring locally. On the other hand, hospitals will often only provide care to the surrounding community through emergency rooms designed to manage crises quickly, reserving advanced medical care and long-term treatment for those who can pay for it. Many hospitals buy real estate in their neighborhoods and advocate for development programs that drive gentrification and displacement. To understand how urban health care institutions work with their communities, the authors address power, history, race, and urbanity as much as the workings of the medical field. The project focuses on three urban hospitals: Connecticut's Hartford Hospital, the crown jewel of the Hartford Healthcare system; the Cleveland Clinic, which coordinates with other providers for routine care while its main campus provides specialty care; and the University of Colorado Hospital, a rare example of an anchor institution that moved out of its urban area. Through this examination, the authors recast urban hospitals in a new light: as not only medical institutions, but also a complex urban force"--

Lean Culture: Collected Practices and Cases provides a variety of case studies taken from articles previously published in Lean Manufacturer Advisor: the monthly newsletter by Productivity Press. Many case studies unavailable from any other single source. Articles categorized by specific area - all desired information is easily located. Book excerpt: Minimalism in architecture has existed in New York for over fifty years. While other styles have come and gone, the simple, perfect expression of space and form that minimalism affords have perennially informed New York spaces -- residential, commercial, and public alike. Now that people's attention is again focused, not only on the New York skyline but also on the history and influence of Big Apple buildings, the time is right for this homage that presents twenty-two of the most representative minimalist projects in New York. Each featured project not only includes exquisite photography, but also brief reminiscences from each architect, reflecting on the spirit of the city as revealed in their works. A final discussion of New York's architectural icons rounds out the book. New York Minimalism is a fascinating journey through recent history's most compelling examples of residential, commercial, and public architecture in New York, a celebration of architectural achievement in the city that never sleeps.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So much writing about architecture tends to evaluate it on the basis of its intentions: how closely it corresponds to the artistic will of the designer, the technical skills of the builder, or whether it reflects the spirit of the place and time in which it was built, making it not much more than the willful (or even subconscious) assemblage of objects that result from design and construction techniques. Renowned writer and thinker David Leatherbarrow, in this groundbreaking new book, argues for a richer and more profound, but also simpler, way of thinking about architecture, namely on the basis of how it performs. Not simply how it functions, but how it acts, "its manner of existing in the world," including its effects on the observers and inhabitants of a building as well as on the landscape that situates it. In the process, Leatherbarrow transforms our way of discussing buildings from a passive technical or programmatic assessment to a highly active and engaged examination of the lives and performances, intended and otherwise, of buildings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Manhattan skyline is one of the great wonders of the modern world. But how and why did it form? Much has been written about the city's architecture and its general history, but little work has explored the economic forces that created the skyline. In Building the Skyline, Jason Barr chronicles the economic history of the Manhattan skyline. In the process, he debunks some widely held misconceptions about the city's history. Starting with Manhattan's natural and geological history, Barr moves on to how these formations influenced early land use and the development of neighborhoods, including the dense tenement neighborhoods of Five Points and the Lower East Side, and how these early decisions eventually impacted the location of skyscrapers built during the Skyscraper Revolution at the end of the 19th century. Barr then explores the economic history of skyscrapers and the skyline, investigating the reasons for their heights, frequencies, locations, and shapes. He discusses why skyscrapers emerged downtown and why they appeared three miles to the north in midtown-but not in between the two areas. Contrary to popular belief, this was not due to the depths of Manhattan's bedrock, nor the presence of Grand Central Station. Rather, midtown's emergence was a response to the economic and demographic forces that were taking place north of 14th Street after the Civil War. Building the Skyline also presents the first rigorous investigation of the causes of the building boom during the Roaring Twenties. Contrary to conventional wisdom, the boom was largely a rational response to the economic growth of the nation and city. The last chapter investigates the value of Manhattan Island and the relationship between skyscrapers and land prices. Finally, an Epilogue offers policy recommendations for a resilient and robust future skyline.
