Book excerpt: "Swiss architects Marianne Burkhalter and Christian Sumi are dedicated to an exploration of the nature of materials and construction. In the last fifteen years, they have built a series of remarkable buildings in wood and stone in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Their work is a thoughtful pursuit of the fundamentals of architectural construction-a style that, like that of Zumthor's buildings, might be called Alpine minimalism. Their interest in simple forms and shapes, in luminous color, in the natural grain patterns of wood, and in the opportunities afforded by joinery and other forms of craftsmanship are evident in every aspect of their built work. This comprehensive monograph includes an in-depth look at 25 of Burkhalter and Sumi's projects, including their most famous built work, the Hotel Zurichberg. Essays by Eugene Asse, Detlef Mertins, Steven Spier, and Lynnette Widder, based respectively in Moscow, Toronto, London, and New York, explore their unique style and demonstrate the growing international acknowledgement of their practice." -- Publisher description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Unite d'Habitation at Marseilles is a key building of the twentieth century, and a seminal work in Le Corbusier's oeuvre. A precursor of buildings in Nantes, Berlin, Briey-en-Foret and Firminy, it established, in built form, Le Corbusier's ideas of public housing that had existed only on paper for more than twenty-five years. David Jenkins argues that the Marseilles Unite stands out as a powerful and convincing testament of Le Corbusier's fundamental humanism and his faith in the principles of the Ville Radieuse and the Brutalist medium of rough cast concrete which in other, less able hands, have since been called into question.

Book excerpt: The New Churches of Europe is primarily concerned with that one room in each religious complex which constitutes the rationale of its being: the room for worship. Ancillary adjuncts provided for educational and social activities, offices, quarters for priest or minister, etc, generally are omitted as being peripheral to the far more trying task of the design of the nave. Moreover, the book does not explore in detail, except where pertinent, building techniques or construction, nor does it go into costs either on an overall or cubic basis. Such factors, though admittedly important, vary so much from country to country, and can be so misleading, that it was thought wiser - given limited space - to concentrate on the message of the forest and only nod to the trees. The author's original intent was to include at least twenty more churches, and to call on parts of many others in substantially illustrated analytical sections of the introduction. However, the severe economics of today's publishing prohibited this. Deep apologies are sincerely extended to those kind architects who generously sent requested material, yet whose churches at the last minute - and for reasons that had little to do with quality - could not be included.

Book excerpt: After several pages of prologue summing up 18th century highlights--especially the rise in importance of geometry--some forty pages cover 1784-1916, focusing on the heavily fenestrated high-rises of the Chicago School and the iron and glass pavilions of Europe. The chapter spanning 1892-1925 concentrates on the many disputes over the trajectory of modernism: Nieuwe Kunst, Stile Liberty, Jugendstil, and Art Nouveau, all arguing the direction that the boom of prisons, hospitals, schools, town halls, and other institutional buildings would take. Three more time divisions follow and a concise compendium of architect biographies ends the volume. Along with an array of great pictures (par for Taschen), Gossel and Leuthauser--both active in the private sector--add a strong prose style attentive to debates among architects and the socioeconomic stage on which architects act. Book excerpt: The global crisis that erupted in 2008 has left unmistakably deep scars in architectural culture. But what is happening now is not solely attributable to what began as a mortgage crisis; many of the causes lie deeper, and go back further than a few years. In a way, the recession has simply accelerated, and exacerbated, various pre-existing trends. Without overstating the case, the West, and above all Europe, is undergoing such major change at the beginning of the twenty-first century that it is no longer logical to expect the future to be simply an extrapolation and continuation of the recent past. And this could well have far-reaching consequences for architecture. Of course, this is not the first time that people have declared that things will never be the same again. And up to now reality has usually turned out to be a good deal better than predicted. But there are reasons why architects in Europe should consider the possibility that this time it really might turn out differently.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compendium on the history and development of subsidized housing in Europe of the twentieth century. Social housing has a long tradition in Europe. Since the early twentieth century, these often anonymously built and unappreciated structures have arisen all across the suburbs of Europe's major cities. In the multidisciplinary and international research project Mapping Public Housing, the Center for Studies in Architecture and Urbanism at the University of Porto's Faculty of Architecture has been tracing the architectural heritage of social housing. The findings demonstrate that, in many cases, vibrant neighborhoods and entire city districts have emerged from such social housing programs. This book takes a closer look at exemplary developments in Germany, Great Britain, Portugal, Switzerland, and Spain. The case studies cover a wide range of social and historical contexts, from the beginnings of social housing in Portugal sparked by German investment during World War I to the propaganda policies associated with subsidized housing for the working class in the 1940s, and to sustainable concepts and ideas for the future. Hidden in Plain Sight offers a wide-ranging panorama that recognizes the development of subsidized residential construction as a part of Europe's cultural history and traces the important role that state-funded housing has played in the emergence of the European welfare state. A contemporary photo essay on a 1960s social housing complex in Lisbon rounds out this volume.
