Book excerpt: "At night, when it is dusk and everything is settled down for the evening, I often walk outside and look at everything in silhouette . and thank God that I have made it this far. I have lived long enough to enjoy all the fruits of my labor and have changed my life for the better." Kate Virginia has taken the long road home. In her gripping, true-life story, she details how she first suffers unthinkable abuse as a child growing up in a dysfunctional family in the 1950s and then as an adult, surviving several more years of domestic violence. Virginia details how her family stays together despite grappling with molestation, drug and alcohol addiction, rape, murder, and a cancer diagnosis. More than just a memoir, The Brown Rabbit is meant to inspire and motivate those who are ready to either leave or give someone the strength to leave an abusive relationship. Witness Virginia's battle to overcome seemingly insurmountable hardships and her mission to reclaim her God-given human right-to be treated with dignity and respect. Book Synopsis Animal Tales from the Caribbean by : George List
Download or read book Animal Tales from the Caribbean written by George List and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional stories from the northern Colombian coast, in both English and Spanish. These twenty-one animal tales from the Colombian Caribbean coast represent a sampling of the traditional stories that are told during all-night funerary wakes. The tales are told in the semi-sacred space of the patio (backyard) of homes as part of the funerary ritual that includes other aesthetic and expressive practices such as jokes, song games, board games, and prayer. In this volume these stories are situated within their performance contexts and represent a highly ritualized corpus of oral knowledge that for centuries has been preserved and cultivated by African-descendant populations in the Americas. Ethnomusicologist George List collected these tales throughout his decades-long fieldwork among the rural costeños, a chiefly African-descendent population, in the mid-twentieth century and, with the help of a research team, transcribed and translated them into English before his death in 2008. In this volume, John Holmes McDowell and Juan Sebastián Rojas E. have worked to bring this previously unpublished manuscript to light, providing commentary on the transcriptions and translations, additional cultural context through a new introduction, and further typological and cultural analysis by Hasan M. El-Shamy. Supplementing the transcribed and translated texts are links to the original Spanish recordings of the stories, allowing readers to follow along and experience the traditional telling of the tales for themselves.
Download or read book Rabbit Hunting written by Dave Fisher and published by Woods N' Water, Inc.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "To stand along high on a stump and hear the hounds screaming at the top of their lungs. To see months of training culminate in a spectacular run, and finally see the rabbit coming full throttle straight for you. And to see him almost frozen in an instant of time as the shot connects and he tumbles into three inches of fresh snow; that is what rabbit hunting is all about." It's hard not to agree. Written by one of the country's most renowned cottontail hunters, this guide will give you all the necessary strategies and cottontail facts you need to get out there and experience this fun for yourself. Providing thirty years' worth of trial-and-error methods, tips, and techniques for consistently taking cottontails, this book explains everything from how to hunt rabbits in bad weather and why they "hole up" to training beagles and tips for hunting with a small pack of hounds. Author Dave Fisher has been involved in hunting and the outdoors since he was a child. For over thirty-three years, he has raised and trained hundreds of dogs, mostly beagles, for hunting rabbits.
