It explains how this all-optical technique allows substantial improvements in both the signal-to-noise ratio and the energy resolution when compared with photoelectron experiments. The authors explain why ATAS is so attractive for the study of electron dynamics in photochemical processes, dynamics in field-ionized atoms and bulk solids, as well as narrow-linewidth core-excited and doubly-excited states of atoms.

Book excerpt: Attosecond science, utilizing short bursts of extreme ultraviolet light, has opened up a fascinating new field of ultafast light-matter interactions, where dynamics in atomic, molecular, and solid state systems can now be followed on the timescale of electron motion. In this dissertation, applications of attosecond pulses toward performing transient absorption spectroscopy experiments on complex electron-correlation-driven processes in material systems are described. In the first chapter, a brief overview of ultrafast spectroscopy, attosecond pulse production, and light-matter interaction in the extreme ultraviolet is provided, which offers the necessary breadth and background for the detailed case study that follows, on the insulator-to-metal phase transition in vanadium dioxide. The origin of the bandgap in vanadium dioxide, which is not predicted to exist under conventional single-particle band theories, has been explained as the result of either electron correlation or structural distortion. The goal of the experiments presented herein is to use transient absorption spectroscopy with attosecond pulses to characterize the timescale of this process and gain a mechanistic understanding of how it occurs. Because vanadium dioxide is heat sensitive, an apparatus had to be specifically tailored to this type of experiments, and it is described in the second chapter. The results and analysis, including extreme ultraviolet static and time-resolved measurements on both the insulating and metallic phases, are described in the third chapter. The second half of this dissertation describes the design and construction of a new vacuum endstation to perform attosecond-pump attosecond-probe measurements, which was constructed and tested at Berkeley and installed at a high power attosecond beamline at the University of Central Florida. Ray tracing simulation and design considerations for the optical layout are described in the fourth chapter, and design of the vacuum endstation, diagnostics, and preliminary experiments and testing can be found in the fifth chapter.

Book excerpt: The creation of attosecond pulses using high harmonic generation (HHG) to produce extreme ultraviolet light (XUV) pulses has enabled table-top core-level spectroscopy in both the gas and solid phase. Because HHG relies on a near infrared (NIR) driver pulse to create the XUV radiation, it is readily incorporated into pump-probe transient absorption and photoelectron spectroscopy experiments, giving way to measurements with unprecedented temporal resolution. The ability of attosecond XUV pump-probe spectroscopy to study solid state semiconductor materials allows for the interrogation of carriers on the timescales where a separation between electronic and lattice dynamics can occur. This will have far reaching implications addressing the fundamental carrier physics that govern the next generation of hot carrier charge transfer devices, which are at the forefront of photocatalytic and electronic device development. In this dissertation, a literature review of XUV transient absorption on solids using HHG is presented in Chapter 1. This chapter details the progress from femtosecond experiments on metal-oxide thin films to attosecond time-resolved experiments on semiconductors. In Chapter 2, the design and construction of the attosecond transient absorption apparatus capable of studying ultrafast dynamics in both solid state and gas phase samples using a near infrared (NIR) pump and an extreme ultraviolet (XUV) probe is presented. Chapter 3 presents transient absorption experiments done on germanium thin films, which measure both electrons and hole dynamics simultaneously in a single measurement. These results are supported by work from a theory collaboration. in Chapter 4, preliminary work on silicon germanium alloys is presented. While the results need further confirmation by additional experiments and characterization, it is clear that signals from hot carrier relaxation are present. Chapter 5 presents a theoretical investigation of a future experiment on silver nanoparticles using a velocity map imaging (VMI) device. The key feature of this theoretical study is the identification of a metric to follow the near-field of the plasmon, isolated from the electric field of the exciting laser pulse.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental technique is developed to measure the complex refractive index in a transient-absorption experiment using attosecond pulse trains. This complex attosecond transient-absorption spectroscopy (CATS) method is demonstrated by measuring the dynamic change, induced by an infrared dressing pulse, in the real and imaginary parts of the refractive index of the argon $3s3p^6np$ Fano resonances. Typical attosecond transient-absorption spectroscopy (ATS) measurements only capture the imaginary part of the refractive index, and the real part can only be indirectly calculated. CATS enables a direct measurement of the real part of the refractive index, and this removes the need to rely upon indirect calculations which are only valid if certain assumptions hold true. While CATS is demonstrated in a gas phase experiment, it can also be used for condensed matter experiments in either a transmission or reflection geometry. As a prelude to the demonstration of CATS, an ATS experiment is performed to examine the dynamics of the argon Fano resonances under the influence of a dressing field. This ATS measurement reveals a complicated structure of light-induced states and light-induced attenuation in the intensity and time delay dependence of the absorption spectrum. The theoretical understanding of these features is detailed, and excellent agreement between theoretical and experimental results is demonstrated. Additionally, the optical tool that enables CATS to be performed is detailed theoretically and experimentally. This tool is a diffractive optical element known as a square-wave phase grating (SWPG). The SWPG allows for an input femtosecond IR pulse to be duplicated, and the SWPG can control the relative phase between these duplicates. This relative phase control is demonstrated, and it is used to measure the ground state complex refractive index of silicon and germanium.

The attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy is a powerful tool to utilize attosecond pulse to measure electron dynamics in quantum systems directly. In this work, isolated single attosecond pulses are used to probe electron dynamics in atoms and to study dynamics in hydrogen molecules using the attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy technique. The target atom/molecule is first pumped to excited states and then probed by a subsequent attosecond extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulse or by a near infrared (NIR) laser pulse. By measuring the absorbed attosecond XUV pulse spectrum, the ultrafast electron correlation dynamics can be studied in real time. The quantum processes that can be studied using the attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy include the AC stark shift, multi-photon absorption, intermediate states of atoms, autoionizing states, and transitions of vibrational states in molecules. In all experiments, the absorption changes as a function of the time delay between the attosecond XUV probe pulse and the dressing NIR laser pulse, on a time scale of sub-cycle laser period, which reveals attosecond electron dynamics. These experiments demonstrate that the attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy can be performed to study and control electronic and nuclear dynamics in quantum systems with high temporal and spectral resolution, and it opens door for the study of electron dynamics in large molecules and other more complex systems.

Book excerpt: Ultrashort pulses with durations less than one femtosecond advance understanding of chemistry and physics by facilitating time-resolved measurements on the timescale of electronic motion. A very pragmatic type of experiment incorporating isolated attosecond (10 & minus18 s) pulses is transient absorption measurements that utilize the broad bandwidth of attosecond pulses. In these measurements the dispersed spectrum of the isolated attosecond pulse is recorded after the attosecond pulse and a time-delayed optical pulse pass through an experimental target of interest. This thesis focuses on the development of an attosecond transient absorption spectrometer with the ultimate goal of using the spectrometer to measure atomic and molecular dynamics. Two experimental studies are presented: one focusing on the behavior of helium atoms bathed in a strong near-infrared optical field, and one focusing on measurement of the lifetimes of autoionizing states in xenon. Measurement of the absorption spectrum of atomic helium bathed in a near-infrared (780 nm) field exhibits new features when the attosecond pulse and the optical pulse are overlapped in the gas target. The features near the 1s2p transition at 21.21 eV are identified as intermediates in two-photon transitions to reach nearby s and d helium excited states that are inaccessible via one photon transitions from the 1s2 ground state of He. Initial measurements identified three intermediate states, and further experiments investigated the behavior of the states as the near infrared field intensity is increased. Attosecond time-resolved measurement of ultrashort lifetimes of autoionizing states is also investigated. The 5s5p66p and 5s5p67p autoionizing states of xenon are visible in the extreme-ultraviolet absorption spectrum of Xe as Fano resonances. The Fano resonances are suppressed by a time-delayed near-infrared pulse and recover with a time-constant that is related to the lifetime of the state. The studies here identified key parameters for time-resolved measurements of the autoionization lifetime, including spectral resolution of the attosecond transient absorption spectrometer.

Book excerpt: This book presents the proceedings of the course "Spectroscopy and Dynamics of Collective Excitations in Solids" held in Erice, Italy from June 17 to July 1, 1995. This meeting was organized by the International School of Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy of the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture. The purpose of this course was to present and discuss physical models, mathematical formalisms, experimental techniques and applications relevant to the subject of collective excitations in solids. By bringing together specialists in the field of solid state spectroscopy, this course provided a much needed forum for the critical assessment and evaluation of recent and past developments in the physics of solids. A total of 83 participants came from 57 laboratories and 20 different countries (Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States). The secretaries of the course were Stamatios K yrkos and Daniel Di Bartolo. 45 lectures divided in 13 series were given. In addition 8 (one or two-hour) "long seminars," 1 "special lecture," 2 interdisciplinary lectures, 29 "short seminars," and 16 posters were presented. The sequence of lectures was in accordance with the logical development of the subject of the meeting. Each lecturer started at a rather fundamental level and ultimately reached the frontier of knowledge in the field.
