Book excerpt: With women comprising a larger percentage of management ranks, it is important to have a better understanding of attitudes towards women as managers. In this paper, three hypotheses concerning attitudes toward women managers were tested. One hypotheses stated that females would have more favorable attitudes women managers than males. The second hypothesis stated that age and attitudes towards women managers would be positively correlated. The third hypothesis stated that work experience would act as a moderating variable. Hypothesis 1 was supported. No support was found for hypotheses 2 and 3.

Book excerpt: Purpose: The current paper deals with the attitudes towards women as managers, and the leadership style that women managers adopt. By replicating a study that was conducted in 1990, we intend to explore how things have changed during the last 15 years, in terms of attitudes towards women in management, as well as in terms of the leadership style that each gender tends to apply at work. Design/Methodology: A longitudinal survey, first run in 1990 and repeated in 2006, with a similar to the original sample of 229 Greek middle managers. Three very popular research scales were used to study the phenomenon: the Women as Managers Scale (WAMS), the Satisfaction with the Supervisor and the Likert 4 types of Leadership styles. Findings: The 2006 initial findings indicate greater presence of women in managerial positions, and relatively stable attitudes towards women as managers. Satisfaction with supervisor does not appear to be significantly correlated with the managers' gender, while, at the same time, no significant difference appears to exist between the leadership styles that male and female managers adopt. Originality/Value: This research is unique in drawing on cross-time, large pool of data, to support the existence of persisting effects in the attitudes towards women as managers, as well as the effect of gender on the satisfaction with supervisor.

Book excerpt: Apart from the biological variations that differentiate the female from the male, there are psycho-social facts of the society that make boundaries for behavior manifestations that are considered appropriate for each sex. These psycho-social pressures would directly and indirectly dictate every sex member of the society to act accordingly. At present, many countries are taking some affirmative action to promote women in different leadership positions. However, women are underrepresented subjects in administration and managerial jobs. Thus, this study is aimed to investigate the existing sex-role stereotypical attitude of employees towards women as leaders and identifying the factors which influence employees' attitude. Attitude towards women as leaders were measured on a 5-level Likert scale. Statistical methods such as t-test, Factorial ANOVA, Multiple Regression, and Logistic Regression were applied. The overall means score of respondents towards women as leaders was significant as compared to the neutral score. I have the confidence that the book can be used as reference materials for Researchers, Feminists, Policy makers, Statisticians, Managers, and University Students.

It studies women's status in managerial positions in Lebanon, and people's perspectives and expectations toward women-managers; it examines whether stereotypes are developing barriers and constraints for women to reach a managerial position, and it analyzes the difference between each gender's attitudes and their opinions about women-managers' ability to handle such a position through evaluating their performance. The thesis was based upon statistics and a survey that is implemented and conducted inside Lebanon. The survey that was in form of questionnaires included more than 300 participants of both genders iside Lebanon. the research indicated that stereotypes are not the main barrier for the advancement of women into managerial positions in Lebanon, and attitudes towards women managers in Lebanon are relatively positive oppositely to what is found in literature. It also proved that there is a difference in perceptions, attitudes, and expectations, towards women-managers, between both genders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to a recent study by the ILO (2001), women’s share of the labour force is increasing worldwide. Today, women’s participation rate in the labour force is over 40 per cent of the global workforce. Higher educational levels and falling fertility rates have contributed to this increased participation. There is also some evidence that women in some Asian countries may be less marginalised in their advancement into top managerial positions than their counterparts elsewhere. As women become more educated and qualified for managerial positions, the number of Asian women managers and executives is predicted to rise over the next decade. This book examines the opportunities and barriers for women managers in Asia and presents an update on their progress in management. This book was previously published as a special issue of the Asian Pacific Business Review.
